After all you wouldn’t want them to be the odd ones out at nursery, school or later in life – never able to share a horror story of the Christmas their mum wouldn’t let them leave the table until they had ‘eaten at least ONE!’ (we have all been there!). Here are our top tips to win the sprout battle this year: 1. Cook together: This often convinces kids to eat almost anything! If they peel and wash them, cut the cross in the bottom (if they are old enough to be safe with a sharp knife!) and then serve them at the table, they are more likely to try as they have helped make them. 2. Disguise ‘em: chop the sprouts into slices or quarters, then sauté gently in butter with bacon and pine nuts disguises the fact that they are actually that most-hated of vegetables, makes them taste delicious and could have them going back for seconds. 3. The ‘make a face’ trick: young children love eating a face and sprouts make excellent eyes, ears and noses. Add a few carrots or parsnips (a cunning ploy to get another one of ‘those’ veggies in!) on top of mashed potatoes; add gravy and voilà – who can resist? 4. Add cheese! Slow roast them glazed with honey, salt and olive oil, and sprinkled (liberally) with Parmesan cheese. If no one else eats them, at least you can ‘enjoy’ them! 5. And if none of these works, enlist help from everyone’s favourite green ogre – Shrek. Renaming them ‘Ogre Cookies’ or Shrek Snacks’ just may get your little ones to try one at least (maybe…?).
