Raring2go! BACK TO SCHOOL 6 raring2go.co.uk Navigating the new school journey The first few weeks of school have flown by and we hope your little one is settling into their new routine. Now's a good time to take stock and consider a few key areas to ensure a smooth continuation of their educational journey. Firstly, check in with your child's emotional wellbeing. The initial excitement may have worn off, and some children might be feeling a bit overwhelmed. Chat with them about their day, their new friends, and any concerns they might have. If they're reluctant to open up (a stock answer in our house was always "don't know!"), try asking specific questions like "Who did you play with at break time?" Sleep routines are crucial. Is your child getting enough rest? If they're still struggling with early mornings, consider gradually shifting bedtime earlier. A consistent routine, including wind-down time without screens, can work wonders. Take a look at their uniform and school gear. Are shoes still comfortable? Do they need spare clothes for messy play? It's worth stocking up on essentials now before sizes sell out. Academically, don't fret if your child isn't reading fluently or writing sentences yet. Remember that every child develops at their own pace. However, if you have concerns, don't hesitate to have a quick word with the teacher at pick-up time or request a brief meeting. Speaking of teachers, now's a good time to establish a positive relationship. Attend any parent information evenings and consider volunteering if your schedule allows. Homework is becoming more routine. Set up a quiet homework area if you haven't already, and establish a regular time for reading and any other tasks sent home. Social life is ramping up too. Consider setting up a few playdates to help nurture budding friendships. It's also a great way for you to meet other parents. Love them or hate them, a WhatsApp group is a great way to keep in touch and communicate easily with fellow parents. Lastly, take a moment to celebrate how far your child has come. Starting school is a big step, and they're doing brilliantly. A little encouragement goes a long way in boosting their confidence for the year ahead. Remember, every child's journey is unique. Trust your instincts, keep communication open with your child and their teacher, and enjoy this exciting new chapter in your family's life!
