The summer holidays feel endless in the best possible way - but September will soon be here and a little gentle preparation can make that first morning back to school a whole lot smoother for everyone. Getting school-ready doesn't have to feel like homework. Simple everyday activities build the skills children need without them even noticing: Baking together practises measuring and following instructions. A trip to the library keeps reading ticking over. Even sorting the washing builds concentration and independence. For children starting school for the first time, the small things matter most. Practise putting on their own coat and shoes, managing a lunchbox and recognising their name written down. Confidence with these little tasks can make an enormous difference on day one. Ease back into routine towards the end of August. Late bedtimes are one of summer's great joys - but a week or two before term starts, gradually shifting sleep and wake times helps little body clocks adjust without the shock of a 7am alarm in September. Most importantly, talk about school positively and often. Excitement is contagious - and the right mindset is half the battle.
