8 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! TUTORTRAIN In recent years, homeschooling has emerged as a significant alternative to traditional schooling, offering families more control over their children’s education. With advances in technology and increasing dissatisfaction with public and private schools, more parents are opting to educate their children at home. While homeschooling was once considered unconventional, it is now a mainstream option that deserves a closer look for its unique advantages and challenges. One of the primary reasons families choose homeschooling is the flexibility it offers. Unlike traditional schools with rigid schedules and curriculums, homeschooling allows parents to tailor education to their child’s needs, interests and pace. This personalised learning can be especially beneficial for children who struggle in a conventional classroom setting or have learning needs. Gifted students can work at an accelerated pace, while those who need more time in certain areas can receive individualised support without the pressure of keeping up with peers. Homeschooling does not require a set place or building to learn. Yes, creating a calm environment free from distractions is important, but this can be created anywhere, opening up the option to learn from anywhere in the world. What an experience! This is particularly helpful for students who compete in sports across the world, meaning learning can work harmoniously with pursuing other interests and hobbies. Homeschooling allows families to incorporate values and worldviews that may not be present in public education. Whether due to religious beliefs, cultural values or differing educational philosophies, many parents appreciate the ability to shape their child’s learning environment in a way that aligns with their personal principles. This autonomy over curriculum and teaching methods empowers families to ensure their children’s education aligns with their academic and character development vision. Many who are thinking about homeschooling may be concerned that their child will not be able to socialise and interact with peers. Nowadays, there are a wide variety of local groups that organise social gatherings, extracurricular activities (often at a reduced cost), and co-ops, which means children can have plenty of opportunities to mix with other homeschooling families. A potential challenge of homeschooling is the significant time commitment required. This, often combined with balancing caring for siblings, other household duties and work, can be very stressful. Many families find creative solutions by sharing responsibilities with other homeschooling parents, utilising online courses and hiring tutors to take on some or all of the subjects being covered. Ultimately, homeschooling is not a one-size-fits-all solution and requires careful consideration and planning. Chatting with other homeschooling families can be very helpful and insightful when researching what you want to do. It is a big decision, but having worked with many families at different stages of this journey, I know it truly can be a wonderful experience where children can thrive and love learning. If you are considering homeschooling and would like to talk, call 07500 862722 to find out more. Homeschooling: A Growing Trend
raring2go.co.uk 9 Raring2go! BRIGHT EMOTIONS Ah, the Summer holidays are coming to an end. Parents often rejoice at the thought of not having to come up with the thousandth idea of what the children can do or having to provide them with the millionth snack. But not every child is looking forward to heading back and some may feel very anxious about their return. We caught up with Sophie Whelan from Bright Emotions, a not-for-profit organisation who support family and childrenís wellbeing to see what advice she had to give if your child is feeling a little nervous. When children experience anxiety, their bodies respond as if they’re facing a threat, activating the fight, flight, or freeze response. It’s important to understand this reaction so that we can help them regain a sense of calm. So, what happens during the fight, flight, freeze response? The brainís amygdala acts like an alarm, signaling potential danger. This survival response releases cortisol and adrenaline, preparing the body to react. However, sometimes this response is triggered unnecessarily. For children, some common triggers include: • Transitions (changing activities or environments) • Sensory overload • Hunger or thirst • Unexpected changes • Lack of connection with thers When a child is deeply stressed, their emotional brain takes control, and their logical brain shuts down, making it difficult for them to respond calmly or rationally. There are a few ways you can help someone in that moment including: 1. Acknowledge and Validate Emotions Recognise and name their feelings, let them know that itís okay to feel anxious and they are safe. For example, “I see you’re feeling worried about going to school. It’s okay to feel that way, I’m here to help.” 2. Stay Calm and Soothing Maintaining your own calmness is crucial, though challenging. Be mindful of your breathing, tone, and body language, as your demeanor can help regulate your child. 3. Encourage Healthy Expression Sometimes, big emotions are hard to express verbally. Encourage your child to draw, write, or even move (like stretching or dancing) to release their feelings. Make it playful and fun, adding humour can help to deescalate.† I’d also suggest looking at some ongoing support strategies with your child and your family. Here are some of the ways in which you could do this: 1. Discuss Physical (body) Signals Help your child recognize signs of anxiety, such as stomach aches, headaches, tightness in the chest, shaky legs, or a racing heart. Understanding that these signals are part of the bodyís natural response can make anxiety more manageable. 2. Create Outlets for Expression Provide tools like a worry monster or a journal where your child can express their fears. Set aside regular time to talk about and work through these worries together. 3. Teach Calming Techniques Practice breathing exercises, mindfulness, and grounding techniques with your child (when they are regulated). These skills will help them manage anxiety and build self-awareness. Itís important to remember that the goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety but to help your child manage it. Equipping them with coping strategies will prepare them to handle stress and challenges throughout life. Bright Emotions is a not-forprofit charity who encourage the wellbeing of children and families through creative and therapeutic interventions. They hold a series of therapeutic programmes to help support families at their bright hub in Renhold and also offer 1-2-1 services in a school setting. 14 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! THINGS TO DO Reading as a bonding experience holds a unique and powerful place in the realm of parent-child relationships. The shared act of reading can create a profound connection, fostering emotional intimacy and a sense of togetherness. When adults read to children, the experience goes beyond the mere transmission of a story. It becomes a shared journey of exploration and imagination. For infants and toddlers, the close physical proximity during storytime establishes a foundation of comfort and security. The sounds of reading aloud, coupled with the soothing tone of a parents voice, creates a tranquil and nurturing atmosphere. These early shared reading moments contribute to the development of a strong attachment between the child and the reader. As children grow, shared reading evolves into a dynamic interaction. It provides a platform for dialogue and discussion, allowing parents to engage with the child's thoughts, questions, and interpretations of the story. This interactive exchange not only enhances the child's language skills but also deepens the emotional connection between reader and listener. Reading together offers an opportunity for shared exploration of new worlds, ideas, and values. It exposes children to diverse perspectives, cultures, experiences, and opens up conversations about the broader aspects of life. Through the characters and situations encountered in books, parents and children can navigate discussions on emotions, relationships, and moral values, enriching the child's understanding of the world and their place in it. The shared experience of choosing books, turning pages, and exploring stories can create a deep sense of cooperation and mutual enjoyment. Whether it is a nightly ritual before bedtime or an impromptu storytelling session when an opportunity arises, the act of reading together acts to strengthen the emotional bonds between individuals. It creates lasting memories, associated not only with the stories themselves but with the warmth and closeness shared during those precious moments of literary exploration. In essence, reading as a bonding experience transcends the pages of a book, weaving a tapestry of shared memories and emotional connections that endure throughout a lifetime. 22 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! WHAT’S ON Drama and dance classes provide a dynamic and supportive environment for children that helps to cultivate and boost their confidence in numerous ways. First and foremost, these classes encourage self-expression. Through improvisation, role-playing, and scripted scenes, children learn to articulate their thoughts and emotions effectively. Doing this not only enhances verbal communication skills but also allows them to explore and to understand their own feelings. And this in turn contributes to a stronger sense of self. More importantly, drama classes help nurture a positive and judgment-free atmosphere. In this creative space, children are encouraged to take risks without fear of failure or criticism. The emphasis is on the process rather than just the outcome. This promotes resilience and forms a willingness to embrace challenges. As children navigate different characters and scenarios, they begin to develop a sense of adaptability and problem-solving skills which are crucial attributes that translate into confidence across various aspects of their lives. Teamwork is another fundamental aspect of drama and dance classes. Collaborating with peers on group routines and performances helps children to learn the the importance of co-operation and mutual support. They learn to listen, that to compromise is fine and to value diverse perspectives. All of which contribute to a robust foundation for interpersonal skills. The ability to work effectively with others is a key component of confidence, as children realise the value of their contributions within a group dynamic. Furthermore, the experience of performing in front of an audience, whether it's classmates, instructors or parents helps children overcome stage fright and again build self-assurance. The applause and positive feedback they will receive become affirmations of their new found capabilities, reinforcing a positive self-image. This newfound confidence extends beyond the stage and will influence academic pursuits, social interactions and many future endeavors. In essence, drama and dance classes provide a holistic platform for children to discover, explore, and celebrate their unique identities. The skills and self-assurance gained through these experiences have a lasting impact that empower them to navigate the challenges of growing up with resilience and confidence. 28 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! THINGS TO DO As the leaves change colours and the air turns crisp, autumn provides a vibrant backdrop for engaging and educational projects that can captivate curious young minds. Here are some creative and enriching autumn activities that seamlessly blend fun with learning: 1. Leaf Identification Scavenger Hunt: Transform a walk into a leaf identification adventure. Equip children with printouts of common tree leaves. As they explore, encourage them to identify different leaves. Back home, create a leaf scrapbook and label each specimen while learning about the trees they come from. 2. Pumpkin Maths and Science: Harness autumn by incorporating pumpkins into maths and science lessons. Count pumpkin seeds for a fun maths activity, estimating and measuring their size. Explore buoyancy by predicting whether a pumpkin will float or sink. Carve pumpkins to study the anatomy, discussing shapes, sizes, and the life cycle of a pumpkin plant. 3. Apple-licious Learning: Apples offer a wealth of educational opportunities. Make apple picking a maths lesson by counting the apples collected. Explore measurement as children weigh apples or calculate the circumference. In the kitchen, engage in ‘apple’ science experiments and discuss the effects of heat on apple slices or simply observe the whole process of making apple sauce. 4. Nature-Inspired Art: Bring the great outdoors inside by creating autumn inspired art projects. Use fallen leaves to make pretty leaf rubbings, exploring the textures and shapes of different leaves. Press leaves between sheets of wax paper to create beautiful autumn window decorations. This enhances artistic skills and encourages observation and creativity. 5. Weather Observations and Nature Journals: Autumn brings dynamic changes in weather. So let’s encourage children to observe and record daily weather patterns in a nature journal. Discuss the science behind changing seasons, the migration of birds, and the reasons behind huge temperature variations. This project nurtures a curiosity about the natural world and encourages skills in observation and recording. 6. Storytelling with Autumn-Inspired Tales: Inspire a love for literature by incorporating autumn themed stories into reading time. Choose books that explore the changing seasons, the life cycle of trees, or the adventures of animals preparing for winter. After reading, encourage children to create their own autumn-inspired stories or illustrations, promoting language and storytelling skills. Educational autumn projects for children not only makes learning enjoyable but also deepens their connection to the natural world. Through hands-on experiences and creative endeavors, children can gain a deeper understanding of the scientific and artistic wonders that autumn has to offer. So, let the leaves fall and the learning rise as you embark on these educational autumn adventures with your young explorers. Harvesting Knowledge: Autumn Projects for Kids
