raring2go.co.uk 9 Raring2go! THINGS TO DO Air Care Bear Adventures Raring2Go! Has teamed up with Bedford Borough Council (and the Air Care Bear) to set children a fantastic summer challenge. Would you like the Air Care Bear to visit your school? First, we have to find out… Where is the Air Care Bear? The Air Care Bear usually looks after the air in and around Bedford. He asks all the children and all the grown-ups if they can keep the air clean by turning off their engines when not in use, as well as thinking of walking, scooting or cycling for their trips instead of driving. But everyone needs a break. Do you know where the Air Care Bear goes for his summer holidays? It could be somewhere where the air is pure, like to Iceland, Norway. Or to mountains, perhaps The Alps or the biggest mountains of them all in the Himalayas. The Air Care Bear cares about the environment, he tries not to go on aeroplanes or use cars, because they cause pollution and are bad for the planet. So perhaps he stays in the UK. Maybe he goes to a beach or visits a castle? Or goes to the Scottish Highlands, where there are mountains and fresh air. Maybe he’s having a staycation in Bedford. After all, there’s lots of great things to do on our doorsteps. Draw a picture of the Air Care Bear showing what he is doing on his summer holidays! Remember to tell us where he has travelled to and why you think The Air Care Bear should visit your school. Make sure your entry includes your child’s name, their age and the school they attend. Scan or photograph your entry to bedford@ raring2go.co.uk by Monday 12th September – we’ll be picking out the best and arranging an Air Care Bear visit to your school. If you are looking for inspiration and ideas, why not visit the Where’s The Air Care Bear? trail at Priory Country Park in Bedford all through the summer holidays.

raring2go.co.uk 13 Raring2go! ADOPTION Could you adopt siblings? Helpthemtogrowuptogether, betheir forever family adoptionconnects.co.uk 0300 300 8090 Siblings are waiting for their forever families, could that be you? Families come in all shapes and sizes, and form in many ways. Adoption is one of those wonderful journeys where a loving family can be formed, and there are brothers and sisters waiting now for their forever family to come forward. Across Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes, we need people like you to consider adopting siblings. They need a person or a family who will not only love and care for them but help them grow up together. Why adopt siblings? By adopting brothers and sisters you will be keeping children together and giving them the opportunity to maintain the bond they have and continue to blossom as a family unit. In some cases, this bond is the only part of their lives that has been stable; their relationship together, their support to each other and their love for each other. They may have been through a tough start in life, but they will understand each other’s feelings better than anyone else. This makes it so important to keep them together. Are you ready to adopt? We have an amazing, diverse community of adopters and we welcome people from all backgrounds to come forward. So, ask yourself: • Do I have the space, time, and energy to care for children? • Am I ready to change my life and give love, support, and care to children? • Can I give children a loving, calm, and emotionally stable home? • If you answered yes, then get in touch, we’d love to hear from you! Find out more by visiting www. adoptionconnects.co.uk or call the team on 0300 300 8090. We’d be happy to answer any questions you may have, and we’ll be here to support you every step of the way.

Hayfield Lakes is located next to a new 292-acre nature reserve and lake in the picturesque Bedfordshire village of Clophill. Accessed off Shefford Road, a range of three-, four- and five-bedroom family homes are priced from £575,000 to £1,150,000. Two-bedroom bungalows will be included in future releases. Hayfield’s homes offer a greener way of living, thanks to air source heat pumps, energyefficient underfloor heating, EV charging points, 100% renewable energy, and fibre optic broadband. Off-plan sales are being taken from a dedicated Sales Lounge that has been created at Hayfield Gate in the nearby Bedfordshire village of Clifton. Large interactive models will enable interested parties to take a closer look at the site layouts for the two schemes and various house designs. Kelly Sharman, Sales and Marketing Director of WhatHouse? ‘Housebuilder of the Year’ Hayfield said: “We are very excited to have released the first zero carbon ready homes for sale at both Hayfield Park and Hayfield Lakes. These new developments will enable future homeowners to enjoy an eco-efficient lifestyle in two sought after and picturesque Bedfordshire villages. In contrast to the highly sophisticated interiors, the architectural detailing for both schemes will be traditional, to maximise kerb appeal and reflect the period properties found locally.” Hayfield’s reputation in Central Bedfordshire is well-established, with the 200 homes at Hayfield Gate in Clifton, and at Hayfield Place in Silsoe – which neighbours the village of Clophill – now in the final phase of construction. The Sales Lounge is located at Hayfield Gate, Haycock Gardens, Clifton, Bedfordshire, SG17 5QN. It is open seven days a week from 10am – 5pm. To book an appointment, or register your interest for Hayfield Park, please call 0800 161 5548 or email HayfieldPark@HayfieldHomes. co.uk. raring2go.co.uk 23 Raring2go! SOLO PLAY Here are seven tips on how you can help your child learn how to do playtime solo. 1. Get Them Started Children will pick up things, and play with them if they’re interested. But sometimes, they’ll immediately grow bored if their imagination runs dry. That’s why they need an endless well of inspiration to make solo playtime last longer. By spending the first few minutes helping your child do an activity (such as building a fort or starting a puzzle with them), they’ll stick with it for a while longer. 2. Have The Right Toys Having the right toys is essential. If the child gravitates to a few toys, then have those particular items available. You can even show them other toys that they didn’t know they had. 3. Don’t Answer Every Request Your child should be able to have plenty of things to play with on their own. However, if you stop, every once in a while, to answer your child’s every whim, then it stops them from playing alone. 4. No Distractions Television, loud music, or other siblings may cause distractions during solo play. Have your child settle down to play on their own by turning off the TV, opting for calming background music (or no music at all), and giving them space away from their siblings. That way, your child will be able to better focus on playing alone. 5. AdmireWhat They’re Doing At A Distance You may respond to one or two requests, but don’t interrupt your child’s playtime. Though, if your child says something like “Watch this!”or “Look what I’ve made!” you can tell them how you like what they’re doing or what they’ve made – just make those comments brief. 6. Talk About It Afterwards Once your child has done solo playtime for the day, sit down with them and talk about the experience. This gives your child the opportunity to tell you how they had spent their time playing alone, and the “adventures” that they had in doing so. 7. Make Time Scheduling can be hectic, when it comes to your child. So, be sure to structure your child’s day, so that they have time to play alone (at least ten minutes a day, when possible). Conclusion Children will need to learn this skill at some point. Playing alone helps them learn: • to focus, and stay focused on a task • to be independent by using creativity • to understand that their parents are some • times busy and can’t be there right away, • AND • to appreciate what they already have Be sure to keep these tips in mind, the next time you want your child to play by themselves for a while. Tips On How Kids Can Learn Solo Play 7The first five years of a child’s life should revolve around learning to socialize with other children. But now that they’re older, they’ll need to learn how to play alone. If this isn’t taught, the child will grow bored and restless. What should you do?

26 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! HELPING HANDS 1. Choose a suitable sunscreen When choosing a sunscreen look out for: • A sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to protect against UVB • At least 4-star UVA protection 2. Be safe around water There is no better way to cool down on a hot day than to have a good splash in the paddling pool, but children can drown in as little as 5cm of water. Keep them safe by: • Never leaving them unattended. • Emptying the pool after each use. • Checking the temperature of the water before letting them in. • Being aware that the grass around the pool can become wet and slippery. 3. Check the temperature of outdoor surfaces Did you know that artificial grass can reach temperatures of up to 62°C in the sun? This is hot enough to cause serious burns to little feet. Outdoor tiles and other surfaces can also get super hot in the sun too. Always check the temperature of surfaces before letting little ones run around outside. 4. Don’t use blankets or muslins to cover a baby’s pram Rather than keeping them cool, throwing a muslin over the buggy can significantly increase the temperature inside the pram. Instead… • Use an in-built sunshade or a light, wellventilated, attachable one. • Dress baby in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. • Give baby more fluids than usual, to keep hydrated. • Avoid being out between 11 and 3 o’clock when the sun is at its hottest and stick to the shade as much as possible. 5. Think about garden safety Is your garden safe for inquisitive little ones to explore? • Get to know the plants in your garden and teach your children never to eat plants they have picked in the garden or out and about. • Fence off ponds to prevent children from falling in. • Store chemicals and sharp tools out of sight and reach of children. • If you have a trampoline ensure that the safety net is used at all times. • Keep children away from BBQs – they can stay hot enough to cause serious burns long after dinner has been served.
