20 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! PICNIC IDEAS I want to share with you some of my picnic ideas for the summer holidays. Let’s get the kids involved in making their own picnic lunches, it’s fun and teaches them valuable skills in preparing and cooking food. I love using Wraps – they are more versatile than sandwiches, and a great way to use up leftovers. I sometimes put leftover chilli and curry in mine! But here’s a few other ideas: Tuna, sweetcorn, and mayo Ham and grated cheese Hummus and grated carrot A sweet alternative, chocolate spread and sliced strawberries, yum! Why not chop up some carrot and cucumber sticks, you can prepare these the night before, I normally put them in a container in a little water, it keeps them from drying out. How about some cheesy treats? Grab a roll of readymade pastry, I love using rough puff pastry, cut it into 3 strips, roll each one out and sprinkle with grated cheese, fold and repeat at least twice. Take a pizza cutter to slice the pastry into 1cm strips. Twist each strip and place on a lined baking tray for 10-15 minutes. The kids will love making these! If you have any leftover pastry from the cheese straws, cut some squares, chop up 2 apples, add some cinnamon and brown sugar to the apples, place the mixture in the middle of the pastry and fold over to make apple turnovers, a quick and easy treat. Kids always love rice crispy cakes, why not let the kids make some for picnicing too! It can be so expensive buying drinks out, so go prepared, have water bottles, or recycle other drinks bottles that you have. Most places will refill a water bottle for no charge and kids are always thirsty. If they don’t like water on its own, which I have confess that I don’t! Then use juice drops which are absolutely great. The leading brands are expensive, but Aldi and Lidl do their own versions which I use and they last for ages. Why not pop some ice cubes in to keep your drinks cool too! Recycle any food containers, and reuse as lunch boxes, get the kids to their names on. If all else fails we have a great range of affordable lunch options that can be collected or delivered so that you are ready to go for a fabulous day out! raring2go.co.uk 25 Raring2go! THINGS TO DO Our easy bug hotel is probably as simple and as easy as it gets – there are many prettier and cleverer bug hotels out there, but sometimes, you just have to make do with what you have and also make it easy for the kids to join in. Materials • A large plastic bottle cut into two cylinders, • String for hanging • sticks & twigs • pine cones • bark • pieces of moss Use anything else you can find – bamboo with it’s holes, make natural straws, which are great hidey hole for insects and bugs! Other bug hotels include other materials such as corn and drilled pieces of wood – to provide different nooks and crannies. I love the one from Garden Therapy. Have a look for inspiration. In essence, I would say: “think natural”, “think nooks and crannies”, “think what will last” (e.g. paper could go soggy and leaves will go brittle and break/ disintegrate). It is great to use things from YOUR local environment, as you are looking to attract bugs and beetles and insects from the same local environment. How to make a Simple Bug Hotel: 1. Cut the bottle down to size We cut our bottle down to shape (may I add, that I actually drank 2 litres of fizzy water, especially for this task as we accidentally threw out our last bottle in the recycling?? Argh!) 2. Arrange your materials Arrange by size and texture – we snapped our twigs to make them a little smaller. Had larger and bigger ones. 3. Hotel location If you plan to hang your bug hotel, loop some garden twine round and then start layering your bug hotel. We did one hotel for on the ground and one for hanging from a tree to see if would attract different creatures. 4. Make the insect hotel nice and cozy Stuff it to make it nice and firm, so it doesn’t get blown about! For more great ideas click here https://www. redtedart.com/ Make a Bug Hotel
