4 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! CLUBS & CLASSES Drama and dance classes provide a dynamic and supportive environment for children that helps to cultivate and boost their confidence in numerous ways. First and foremost, these classes encourage self-expression. Through improvisation, role-playing, and scripted scenes, children learn to articulate their thoughts and emotions effectively. Doing this not only enhances verbal communication skills but also allows them to explore and to understand their own feelings. And this in turn contributes to a stronger sense of self. More importantly, drama classes help nurture a positive and judgment-free atmosphere. In this creative space, children are encouraged to take risks without fear of failure or criticism. The emphasis is on the process rather than just the outcome. This promotes resilience and forms a willingness to embrace challenges. As children navigate different characters and scenarios, they begin to develop a sense of adaptability and problem-solving skills which are crucial attributes that translate into confidence across various aspects of their lives. Teamwork is another fundamental aspect of drama and dance classes. Collaborating with peers on group routines and performances helps children to learn the the importance of co-operation and mutual support. They learn to listen, that to compromise is fine and to value diverse perspectives. All of which contribute to a robust foundation for interpersonal skills. The ability to work effectively with others is a key component of confidence, as children realise the value of their contributions within a group dynamic. Furthermore, the experience of performing in front of an audience, whether it's classmates, instructors or parents helps children overcome stage fright and again build self-assurance. The applause and positive feedback they will receive become affirmations of their new found capabilities, reinforcing a positive self-image. This newfound confidence extends beyond the stage and will influence academic pursuits, social interactions and many future endeavors. In essence, drama and dance classes provide a holistic platform for children to discover, explore, and celebrate their unique identities. The skills and self-assurance gained through these experiences have a lasting impact that empower them to navigate the challenges of growing up with resilience and confidence. 11 Raring2go! PLACES TO GO Chocolat the disabled Chimp flies to a sweet new home at Monkey World DHL Express and Monkey World announced that they have successfully relocated Chocolat, a female chimpanzee and orphan of the illegal bushmeat trade in the Republic of Congo, to her new long-term home in Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre, Dorset, UK. Chocolat was an infant when her family were hunted which left her with many injuries. After spending the past twenty years in Kenya being looked after by her original rescuer, Chocolat has now found a long-term home at Monkey World, which provides specialist care for chimpanzees that have been smuggled from the wild and/or suffered abuse or neglect. To accommodate her needs, her new enclosure has been treated to upgrades such as lower platforms, new nesting areas, and cargo nets, all designed to make Chocolat’s new home as accessible as possible. Throughout the journey DHL Express provided Chocolat with VIP service, transporting her in a custom-built crate supported by a team of specialist keepers, aircraft engineers, cargo handlers, security personnel, and pilots. Throughout the trip Chocolat snacked on fresh fruit, nuts and sweet potato. Her journey, which was carefully planned to reduce the amount of time she spent in transit, began at Nairobi Airport on August 15th, included a brief stop in Bahrain, and concluded with a seven-hour flight to East Midlands Airport, where she arrived on the morning of August 16th. From there, she was transported by road to her new home at Monkey World. At her new home Chocolat is being gradually introduced to six other chimpanzees who will become her adopted family. Monkey World is home to chimpanzees rescued from 16 different countries. Chocolat’s new family were rescued from Mexico, Argentina, Cyprus, and Thailand, and also have various disabilities as a result of their tragic backgrounds. She has already made friendly contact with Bryan, the dominant male in her group, reaching out to him and for the first time in over 20 years, touching a fellow chimp. She is getting used to a diet with a larger variety of vegetables than she has been accustomed to. As she learns how to be a chimp again, Chocolat is expected to live out the rest of her days in peace at Monkey World. Chimps like Chocolat have an average life expectancy of 50 years.

16 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! FIREWORKS Helping children who are nervous on fireworks night Every child is unique, some like fireworks more than others and some don’t want to watch them at all which is fine. If your child is nervous around loud noises or is autistic, these are our suggested tips which may help. Explain what’s going to happen. Social or visual stories can be a great help. Let them know when they’re going, where they’re going and the different steps once you’re there. If you can include images, it will help. You can find videos of firework displays on YouTube if they have never watched a display before. Not sure where to start? Google ‘fireworks social stories’ for some ideas or Monkey World have an excellent example of a social story on their website. It’s not fireworks related but it is a great example! Go to www.monkeyworld.org, click on ‘Visit Us’ followed by ‘Disabled Facilities’ and then ‘Accessibility Guide’ to find it. Have plenty of distractions. Hungry children can become distressed children very quickly. Having snacks and drinks on hand can help, maybe even a hot chocolate on a cold night can keep children from worrying and keep their tummies happy too. Use ear defenders or ear plugs. Ear defenders obviously help with the noise, I also find that they help other people realise your child may have extra needs and give them a bit of space! If your child isn’t a fan of ear defenders (especially as they get towards the teen years) we find Loop ear plugs discreet and effective. Contact the venue If your child has a disability or condition, the venue may have a specific viewing area which might give them some extra space and help deal with the crowds. Comfy shoes! Footwear isn’t just essential for keeping little feet warm, my daughter finds the vibrations from the fireworks as off putting as the sound. Having shoes with squishy soles doesn’t elimate the issue but it can reduce it. Consider something low key at home If the noise of fireworks is a big no, maybe toasting marshmallows over a fire basket would be better, or a few sparklers, or one of our favourites is a Mystical Flame sachet that makes the flames burn different colours. (link to Mystical Flames on the QR code). THE FIREWORK CODE ALWAYS FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE ✷ Do not buy fireworks from UNLICENCED retailers. These fireworks may be unsafe and illegal. ✷ Only buy fireworks that comply with current safety standards.* ✷ Always keep fireworks in a closed box. Grease and line a brownie tray with baking parchment. 3. Melt the chocolate and butter together in a microwave and mix until well combined. 4. Mix in brown sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. 5. Add in the flour and cocoa and mix until it is all combined. 6. Throw in a handful of chocolate drops at the end and mix in. 7. Cook for 45 minutes exactly. Err on the side of caution! but don’t cook for longer or the top will burn. 8. Cut into 12 slices once cool Enjoy on their own or with a splash of cream and some fresh berries. You will need a brownie tray! Ingredients 250g unsalted butter 250g dark chocolate drops 400g soft light brown sugar 4 eggs 150g plain flour 60g cocoa powder 0.5 tbsp vanilla extract Handful of dark chocolate drops thrown in at the end For those nights when it’s particularly dark and a little bit rainy there is nothing like enjoying a steaming hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate with a slice of something that is particularly nice. Comfort food to cheer you up which is precisely what these brownies by Fay Millar of Brighton Cakes are. A somewhat decadent, moreish and dare we say tantalisingly tasty treat you can whip up in literally just a few brief moments. They are extremely easy to make, require only very basic ingredients and take around 15 minutes to prepare, though cooling time is a little longer. Enjoy them on their own or turn them into a pudding and serve with some cream, caramel sauce or custard. Raring2make! Recipes to make as a family for the family
