Raring2go! PLACES TO GO 9 Explosive family fun at Boom & Bloom this spring at Winchester Science Centre See page 31 to win tickets! Spring into a new season of exciting science fun at Winchester Science Centre this March and April. Outside things are beginning to bloom and inside the experiments are set to go boom at Boom & Bloom. Between Saturday 18th March and Sunday 17th April, there’ll be all the usual Science Centre fun, plus even more to excite all ages, all included with admission. Join in with an eggs-travaganza Easter hunt, help plant the Boom & Bloom garden and get hands-on with bubble-fun live science. It’s not just the animals that are blooming in spring, have you heard the buzz around pollination? Visitors are invited to head off on a pollination exploration in Flower Power, a free live science show where families will discover more about this fascinating and vital part of nature. Have you ever climbed the branches of tree? Or enjoyed a juicy bit of fruit? Pollination played a key role in all those activities. But how? In this fun-filled 20-minute live science show, families will get an in-depth look at how pollination works through exciting experiments and live demos. Discover which animals are key pollinators and learn what plants they are attracted to. And be wowed by the ballistic seed dispersal finale. If live science has got the kids excited, they won’t want to miss out on the bubble fun in Science Live. Families can get hands on and become part of the experiments. Or for a bit of natural science visitors can head over to Bio:Space to help plant the Boom & Bloom garden. Discover more about what plants and flowers need to grow and come back in the summer to see how much has changed. We know how to grow plants on Earth, but can we sustain life on other planets? That’s the question being asked in The Planetarium. Zoom into the stars for a family space adventure in Solar System Quest, a live presenter-led show. And in We Are Aliens, a subtitled film show, Harry Potter star, Rupert Grint, will narrate an exciting film looking at if there is life out there beyond our planet. Planetarium shows are an additional small charge. For more information about the 2023 season at Winchester Science Centre visit WinchesterScienceCentre.org.

Every area has one and they’re a free, impartial & confidential service for children and their parents/carers. When can you use them? This is where SENDiass can help, they can advise you of the law and responsibilities of your school/local authority to support your child. What can the do? SENDiass can advice you on: • Your rights, options & responsibilities. • Education, Health Care Plans • Help with paperwork, completing forms, writing letters & understanding reports. • Support preparing for and attending meetings. • Resolving disagreements • Fixed-term & permanent exclusions • Managing mediation and appeals • Support with complaints • Signposting other services • Face-to face appointments at your own home or local venue. How do you contact them? Their new website: sendiass4bcp.org It contains masses of useful information from myth busters about their service, factsheets on subjects from Exclusions to Transport and ‘How to’ Webinars. There is also information about our wonderful Parent Champions and the opportunity to join in the great work they do. They also have a confidential advice line: 01202 128181 which is open Monday to Thursday between 9:30am12:30pm In person at one of their monthly drop in sessions at Somerford Arc community centre. 20 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! EDUCATION The Benefits of Being an All Through School Talbot Heath is an independent day and boarding school which offers a dynamic and holistic education to girls aged 3-18. Community, continuity, and a coherent curriculum are just some of the huge benefits that being an all through school gives to every one of its students at Talbot Heath. Staff get to know each and every pupil as they progress from Kindergarten right through to Sixth Form, forging longterm relationships with students; our broad and innovative curriculum provides cogent consistency and progression across the year groups and key stages, and our dedicated staff build strong, supportive, nurturing relationships, having guided girls through all aspects of their development. The younger members of our school benefit greatly from the support and role modelling that the older girls provide, and equally, the older pupils can develop their empathy, mentoring and leadership skills whilst working alongside younger pupils. Indeed, the latest initiative for students is ‘The Bridge’ – a volunteer mentoring programme where sixth formers support younger Talbot Heathens in mathematics and through the Forest School. Whole school events such as the Harvest Festival celebrations and School Birthday cement that sense of community through annual shared traditions. Parents have regularly acknowledged how their daughters have developed a strong sense of security throughout their education as a result of being surrounded by familiar people and places. Indeed, it is this sense of security that enables our pupils to look outwards and take on their future with confidence and conviction. Pupils attending our Junior School will automatically be offered a place in our Senior School in Year 7 if they have a positive attitude to learning across the curriculum, alongside standardised and teacher-based evidence of progress being made in English, Maths and Science; this immediately eliminates the anxiety and stress of entrance examinations. Pupils will benefit from the comprehensive and consistent approach to learning and the values and ethos of the school’s motto, ‘Honour before Honours’ embodied by each individual. These values include: kindness to others, good behaviour, industry, contribution to school life and being a positive role model. Book your place now on our Kindergarten, Pre-Prep and Junior School Open Morning, Fri 3rd March, www.talbotheath.org/openday
