Trying Water Sports Water sports have a reputation for being expensive! AvonTyrrell.org.uk near Bransgore is a gem if you’re looking to try new activities. They’re run by the charity UK Youth who are on a mission to inspire young people with outdoor learning and that means their activities are great value. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful which is essential when trying something new! If you’re confident with water activities like Stand Up Paddleboarding but don’t have the equipment, check out the Water Sports Library who can lend out equipment for free! watersportslibrary.com Crabbing! A family favourite for decades, Mudeford Quay, Poole Quay and Kimmeridge Bay are all very popular locations. Equipment such as lines and buckets can be brought for a few pounds either from the local gift shops or if you’re lucky one of the discount stores. Don’t forget your bait, crabs love smelly food like bacon, sardines – the stinkier the better. Visit your local nature reserves Hengistbury Head and Stour Valley Nature Reserve are beautiful places to spend a summer day for just the cost of a car parking ticket (and parking is free at Stour Valley). Hengistbury Head usually has a good breeze which makes it the perfect location for flying kites! Keep an eye on their Facebook pages or websites for extra events or trails which come up. Skate parks There are several local skate parks around BCP now, including Kings Park and the new(ish) park behind Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre. Little ones may prefer Ramp Rats which is chargeable but exclusively for under 10s. Prices start at £4.50. ramprats.co.uk Junior Parkrun For families with plenty of energy, Parkruns are free, fun and there’s no time limits (and nobody comes last). 2km Junior Parkruns, for children age 4-14, are held at Upton Country Park and Slades Park on Sunday mornings. parkrun.org.uk National Trust Another great value option is a National Trust membership which is something we really get our money’s worth from! £6.95 per month for single adult families or £11.15 a month for 2 adults and that includes as many children as you have living with you so it’s brilliant for larger families. Grandparents with family memberships can include ALL of their grandchildren at no extra cost. The membership gets you access to all their properties across the country, including local sites such as Corfe Castle, Kingston Lacy, Stourhead and free parking in Studland Bay.
