4 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! PLACES TO GO HEARTBREAKER ALERT: Monkey World welcome infant orang-utan, Sibu Junior, to the rescue centre. In October, Alison collected Sibu Jr, a young 12-week-old male orang-utan from Dublin Zoo. His mother did not feed him despite her loving him and the zoo making efforts to show the pregnant orang-utan, who had history of being unable to care for her babies, how to breastfeed youngsters. The team at Dublin Zoo cared for Sibu Junior round the clock for the first couple months of his life, while arrangements were made to transfer him to Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre. Monkey World is home to the European specialist orang-utan crèche for orphaned and rejected infants, which aims to break the cycle of abandonment and help female orang-utans rear their own young in future. For the little boys like Sibu Junior, growing up in the Orang-utan Nursery Crèche gives them the skills to live with women and children when they become fully mature males. The nursery is currently home to four other young orang-utans born in zoos in Hungary, Germany and the UK, who were also unable to be reared by their own mothers. At Monkey World they are now cared for by the crèche foster mother Oshine, a Bornean orang-utan who was rescued from the illegal pet trade in South Africa in 2010. Director of Monkey World, Dr Alison Cronin MBE, travelled to Dublin to meet the beautiful, but vulnerable infant, and bring him back to Monkey World. She was accompanied back to the Dorset sanctuary by a member of Sibu Junior’s care team from Dublin, to keep his transition as stress free as possible. Alison said “It is really too bad that Sibu’s mother did not feed him, it was what everyone had hoped for. In the end the team at Dublin Zoo saved the baby’s life and cared for him around the clock while necessary health checks and paperwork were completed for the transfer of the infant to Monkey World. It is so important that orphan orang-utans grow up with others of their own kind. Monkey World specialises in the care of these very vulnerable infants and has specialist facilities to aid in their development and integration into the Nursery Crèche. At present Sibu is just over 3kg and is taking 90mls of formula at a time, throughout the day and night. He is not ready to join the others just yet but it won’t be long before he is able to sit up and move around on his own. Then he can start spending days in the nursery and get to know some of the others that live there. Sibu’s future in the nursery crèche is a long one as he will stay with us, growing up with other orang-utans for the next 10 years before having an adult group of his own someday.” Including Sibu Junior, Monkey World has received 10 orphan orang-utans from seven different countries to date. The future is bright for this young orange man!

21 Raring2go! EDUCATION The Power of Girls-Only Education: Nurturing Future Leaders at Talbot Heath School In a world where gender equality remains a work in progress, all-girls education plays a pivotal role in creating a space where young women can thrive, both academically and personally. Talbot Heath School, a girls’ school offering education from age 2 to 18, is a prime example of how a single-sex learning environment fosters confidence, resilience, and leadership in young women. An Environment Free from Gender Stereotypes At Talbot Heath School, students are free from the societal pressures and gender biases that often arise in co-educational settings. This allows them to focus on their strengths, ambitions, and passions without the distractions of conforming to traditional gender roles. Girls feel more empowered to pursue interests in subjects that are often male-dominated, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). At Talbot Heath, girls regularly excel in science, technology, and mathematics, gaining the skills and confidence to pursue these fields at university and beyond. This supportive environment also nurtures leadership qualities, as every leadership role—from student parliament to club leader — is held by a girl. This experience fosters a sense of selfassurance and independence that serves them well in their future careers. A Curriculum Tailored for Girls’ Development Talbot Heath School’s approach to education is designed to meet the specific learning styles and developmental needs of girls. Research shows that girls often thrive in collaborative, discussion-based learning environments, where they feel safe to express their ideas and take intellectual risks. The school’s small class sizes and emphasis on holistic education ensure that every student receives the individual attention they need to reach their full potential. In addition, Talbot Heath integrates outdoor learning and wellbeing initiatives into the curriculum, such as its Wellbeing Wednesdays, where girls participate in activities like mindfulness, self-defence, and creative arts. These programs help girls manage stress, develop emotional resilience, and build a well-rounded sense of self. Building Resilient and Compassionate Young Women One of the key benefits of an all-girls education at Talbot Heath is the focus on personal growth and emotional wellbeing. The school understands that young women face unique challenges in today’s world and provides a nurturing environment where they can develop resilience, compassion, and confidence. Talbot Heath’s new wellbeing centre, “The Oasis,” offers a dedicated space for students to reflect, relax, and recharge. Preparing for the Future By educating young women in an environment that prioritises their growth and empowers them to take on leadership roles, Talbot Heath School is not just preparing girls for academic success—it is preparing them for life. Here, they learn to embrace their strengths, overcome challenges, and pursue their dreams without limits. An all-girls education at Talbot Heath nurtures future leaders, ready to make their mark on the world with confidence and compassion. Tracy Harris, Head
