The girls decided to cut their hair off in aid of charity the Little Princess Trust, which takes donated hair and creates wigs for children who have lost their hair to chemotherapy and other treatments and conditions. Jenny and Hazel, from Rosliston in South Derbyshire, decided to do the challenge off their own backs; and have raised more than £100 that will go towards the cost of making the wigs. The Little Princess Trust provides free, real-hair wigs for children and young people experiencing the devastating effects of hair loss. It also fund pioneering, life-saving research into childhood cancers. Established in 2006, the Trust has supplied over 12,000 wigs to children and young people and have invested circa £20 million into ground-breaking childhood cancer research. With many thanks to the Hair Lodge in Rosliston for making the big chop a positive experience. Could you be our next star? Or do you know an under-16 that’s done something amazing? Let us know at burtonandashby@raring2go.co.uk and you could be featured in the next magazine!

READING Young adult author Alex Foulkes, has just released her second novel Rules for Vampires: Ghosts Bite Back, a ghostly spectacular just in time for Halloween! Raring2go! Editor for Burton and Ashby Alice Johnson caught up with the Stoke-on-Trent local. Local YA Author Releases Second Book in Rules for Vampires Series Q: Congratulations on the launch of your second YA novel! Tell me about what adventures Leo and Minna get up to in ‘Ghosts Bite Back’. A: Thank you so much! I’m so excited for everyone to join Leo and Minna again, as the ghostly activity in the Dreadwald didn’t end with book one! In ‘Rules for Vampires: Ghosts Bite Back’, Leo finds herself summoned to the Ghostly Realm to stand trial for the death of the wicked Orphanmaster. Unfortunately though, this happens on the night of the Blood Moon Banquet, which is a VERY fancy vampire event being held at Castle Motteberg this year. Leo must separate her body and her soul to venture to the Ghostly Realm with Minna, and return before Lady Sieglinde – her evil, powerful vampire mum – finds out she’s missing. Q: How does Minna develop as a character? A: Minna is a really important character in ‘Rules for Vampires’, and she’s absolutely at the heart of the story again in Ghosts Bite Back. We’re meeting a Minna this time who is figuring out what it means to be a ghost, really honing her abilities and finding her place in this new world. It isn’t easy for Minna, to say the least, and she has a lot of self-doubt. For Leo’s part: it can be really hard when your friend is going through something that’s totally different to everything you know. Ghosts Bite Back is really about Leo learning to properly understand what Minna’s life (or lack thereof) is like, now that she’s a ghost. Q: What kind of feedback did you have from young readers on the first book? A: The response to ‘Rules for Vampire’s as a new series has been really overwhelming! As a new author I’m really keen to receive feedback. It’s been so lovely to see young readers enjoying these characters and this world. My hope writing them was that readers might imagine that they are Leo and Minna’s friend, having adventures in the Dreadwald. The letters and drawings I’ve received seem to tell me just that! I do cry a lot. I’m quite a soft person and it makes me so happy that something we’ve worked so hard on has been so well-received. Q: Is this the start of a series of novels? A: We’re never saying never for a book three in the Rules for Vampires series! Q: What’s next for Minna and Leo as characters? A: I just HAVE to write more. I’m currently working on an extremely exciting new adventure, where Leo and Minna will be sent off to fancy vampire boarding school! Imagine a place where you learn both manners and vampire combat. It’s already looking HUGE and so exciting! In the meantime, I have a new project in the works that I’m hoping I’ll be able to talk about very soon – because I can hardly keep it in! I’m also continuing my journey in developing my visits to libraries, bookshops and (my favourite!) schools. If anyone would like a school visit where we get VERY VAMPIRIC all year round, please get in touch. I would love to meet you! Turn to page 29 to win a copy of Rules for Vampires: Ghosts Bite Back!

21 20 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! CRAFT ACTIVITY Raring2go! CRAFT ACTIVITY Make Your own Halloween Lanterns Time for a spooky activity! These easy-tomake Halloween lanterns are a quick craft project that will get your children enthused about the spooky holiday this year. You will need: • A sheet of coloured card or stiff paper - pumpkin orange, white ghosts, green Frankenstein or black bats • Scissors • Glue or sticky tape • Colouring pens or pencils • A ruler Step 1. Cut a 2cm strip from the width of your paper or card (A4 is a good size) and keep aside. Step 2. Fold the larger piece in half length-ways. Open out and draw on the face you’d like in the middle of the crease and then fold it back in half. Step 3. Draw a 2cm border line on the length of the paper at the bottom (not the fold). Now turn the paper/card round and draw lines from the fold to the line you’ve just drawn, at 2 or 3cm intervals. Cut along these lines from the crease to the border/line. Step 4. Open out your lantern and fold it width-ways, using glue or sticky tape to close the top of the lantern. Your lantern should look like this. Step 5. Use sticky tape to attach the handle. Tips: Stick on googly eyes or cut out wing shapes and stick these to the back of a black lantern to create a scary bat! Or make a green lantern with googly eyes, gappy teeth and some drawn-on scars to create your very own Frankenstein. Don’t forget to show us your makes! And you’ve finished!

FESTIVE FEATURES Shop Local This Christmas Recipe: Crispmas Pudding Ingredients 250g Milk or Dark Chocolate 100g White Chocolate 100g Puffed Rice Cereal 2 Tablespoons of Golden Syrup Green icing (pens are the easiest) Red icing (pens are the easiest) Festive cake cases Method Melt the milk or dark chocolate and golden syrup together in a saucepan over a low heat. When melted (do not allow to boil), mix in a large bowl with the puffed rice. Using a teaspoon, spoon the mixture into the cake cases. Chill for half an hour until the chocolate has set. Five minutes before taking them out of the fridge, melt the white chocolate in a saucepan over a low heat or in the microwave. Spoon the chocolate over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides of the Crispmas Cakes. Chill for at least 10 minutes, or until set. Using the green writing icing pen, draw two holly leaves on the top. And with the red writing icing pen, add two dots to resemble holly berries. Top Tip: If you can’t find writing icing pens, consider buying ready-made sugar decorations for the top. The golden syrup in this recipe makes the Crispmas Puddings nice and chewy! 25 24 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! EDUCATION Raring2go! EDUCATION How to choose the best secondary school for your child Choosing the best school for your child can be very stressful. However, planning ahead will make the process much easier. “Every lesson should be outstanding. Teachers should adopt a child centred learning style. It is the job of teachers to inspire, motivate and constantly develop new strategies to find each child’s unique talent.” Preparation for your visit Consider all the options You may have several reasons for not including a school on your short-list but whatever the reason it is best to keep an open mind until you have done your homework. Schools change and what may have been a ‘failing’ school may now be outstanding, due to new leadership. Research Find out as much as you can about the school before your visit. Look at Ofsted reports, visit parent forums, read magazines or any articles you can nd about the school performance. Look at the school website. Is it updated regularly? The school website is the window to a school, a well-managed school will usually have an excellent website. Ask to speak to the Head Teacher Can you? If not why? Try to schedule a meeting with the Head during your visit. This will give you an invaluable insight about the ‘culture of openness’ within the school. Observe and ask questions Where possible it is useful to see how children interact before and after school, this will give you a good indication about whether your child will ‘ t in’. Speak to parents of children attending the school. “Sometimes instinctively you just know (it is similar t buying a house) if you felt inspired after your rst visit and you can imagine your child being there then it is probably the right choice”. Things to look for Are you happy with the class size? Do ALL the children seem engaged? Is their work displayed and is it age appropriate? Is the Head approachable to students, parents and teachers?
