A trip to Puttify at Guildford Spectrum turned out to be one of those rare family outings where everyone genuinely had a good time - including the adults. We went along with four children aged between four and eight and, from the moment we arrived, they were completely hooked. Puttify is definitely not your traditional crazy golf course. There are no pirate ships, windmills or tiny pencils here. Instead, it’s bright, modern and interactive, with automatic scoring that means parents don’t have to spend the whole game trying to remember who got a four on the last hole. A small miracle in itself! The course feels much more fast-paced than regular mini golf and that worked perfectly for our group. Each hole was different enough to keep the children excited, but not so tricky that anyone became frustrated. Even the youngest, aged four, happily made it all the way around without losing interest - which honestly might be the best review any family attraction could ask for! One of the biggest wins for us was the length of the game. The whole experience took about 40 minutes, which felt just right. Long enough to feel like a proper outing and worth the money, but short enough to avoid the inevitable “I’m hungry” or “Can we go now?” halfway through. Parents everywhere will understand. Because it’s all indoors, it’s also a brilliant option for rainy weekends, after-school treats or when you need to burn off some energy without committing to an entire day out. The atmosphere is fun and lively without feeling overwhelming, and the technology gives it a slightly futuristic feel that the children absolutely loved. Guildford Spectrum already has plenty going on for families, but Puttify feels like a really great addition. It’s easy, entertaining and just different enough from normal crazy golf to make it feel special. Judging by the excitement levels on the drive home, we’ll definitely be back for another round soon! Raring2go! FAMILY SERVICES 19 As families begin preparing for the new school year, one item deserves special attention: properly fitted school shoes. Children spend many hours on their feet every day, walking to school, playing with friends and taking part in sports and classroom activities. Wearing shoes that fit correctly is essential for comfort, confidence and healthy foot development. Children's feet grow rapidly, often changing size several times a year. Shoes that are too small can restrict natural growth and cause discomfort, while shoes that are too large may lead to instability and increase the risk of trips and falls. Regular foot measurements and professional fitting can help ensure children have the support and room they need as they grow. This message is at the heart of ShuZu, an independent shoe store that has been serving local families for over 22 years. With a motto of "Fit Comes First", ShuZu is trusted by podiatrists and health professionals for its thorough fitting service and expert advice. The friendly team helps families find the right size, fit and style from a wide range of quality brands, including Start-Rite, Ricosta, Geox, Froddo Barefoot, Skechers, Superfit and Primigi. From first shoes and trainers to school shoes, ShuZu caters for growing feet of all ages, including children who wear orthotics or splints, with sizes available up to an adult 12. As proud members of the The Footwear Hub, ShuZu supports the Fit Well Grow Well campaign, which promotes regular foot checks and awareness of the importance of well-fitted footwear. With Back to School just around the corner, fitting appointments are available throughout the summer holidays to make preparation stress-free for families.
Eight years ago, that’s exactly what I did. After a successful career in publishing, I was pregnant with my daughter Izzy and couldn’t imagine going back to a 9–5 in London with a long daily commute. I knew I still wanted to work - I just didn’t want to miss out on watching her grow up. Raring2go! turned out to be the perfect solution. Pastures New After eight incredible years, I’m now looking for someone new to take over the magazine, which has truly become my second baby. It’s a thriving, well-respected business, and I’d love to find someone who’ll continue to grow it and care about it as much as I have. A new opportunity has come my way, which is why I’ve decided to sell my Raring2go! baby - but don’t worry, I’m not disappearing! The magazine will continue as normal until I find its perfect new owner. What’s life like as a Raring2go! publisher? You’ll be your own boss, but with the full support of the Raring2go! franchise behind you - there’s always someone to turn to for advice when you need it. No previous experience is required, though a love of your local community, a good eye for detail, and a can-do attitude will definitely help. The role typically takes around 20–25 hours a week, and the best part is you choose when you work, so it fits easily around family life. Can I really have a career and still be there for my family? Absolutely! Raring2go! has given me the flexibility to do the school run, attend sports days and nativities, and enjoy time off during school holidays. We’ve also been lucky enough to try out so many fantastic activities and days out - discovering wonderful places, reviewing attractions, shows, classes and more along the way. So, if you’ve always dreamed of working for yourself and would love the chance to take on a well-established, much-loved local business, I’d love to hear from you. Give me a call for a friendly chat on 07841 156 821 or email gemma.campbell@raring2go.co.uk THIS MAGAZINE IS FOR SALE! Could YOU be the next publisher for Raring2go! Guildford & Surrey Heath? 22 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! EDUCATION
23 Raring2go! EDUCATION In my role as Head of Art, I am passionate about how nature and art come together to unlock imagination, calm the mind, and inspire deep, joyful learning. The link between nature and creativity is powerful and undeniable. Nature engages all the senses; its colours, textures, sounds, and shapes spark curiosity and invite exploration. Our students do not just observe nature; they interact with it in handson and tactile ways that fuel their creativity. Scientific research supports what we observe in the classroom: spending time in nature helps restore children’s attention and focus. Natural environments allow the brain to relax and recover from mental fatigue which improves concentration and encourages creative problem-solving. Additionally, being outdoors boosts cognitive flexibility, the ability to think in new and original ways which is a key ingredient for creativity. Many of our students do not always realise how deeply nature is woven into their learning. From using recycled materials to create artwork, to the natural textures and colours they explore, nature is at the heart of every project, even when it is subtle. One of the most wonderful things about nature is its endless variety; no two leaves are the same just as no two people are alike. This diversity in nature reminds us of ourselves as individuals, each with unique qualities and potential. The unpredictability of nature, like the sudden surprise of an insect crawling out from under leaves, sparks a sense of wonder and curiosity in the children (and a few screams!). This curiosity is the very seed of creativity, encouraging them to explore and experiment. Nature also helps to foster collaboration. When children work together outdoors, they share discoveries, exchange ideas, and build on each other’s creativity. A simple walk in the school grounds can spark conversations about colour, form, and texture, leading to group projects that celebrate collective imagination. Another important dimension is sustainability. By encouraging students to use natural and recycled materials we instil values of environmental responsibility alongside artistic skill. Nature is at the heart of our art practice. By learning from and creating with the natural world, our students develop a lifelong love of creativity grounded in curiosity, mindfulness, and respect for the environment. The students understand that art is not only about producing beautiful objects but about cultivating ways of seeing, thinking, and connecting with nature.
