Raring2go! XXXXXXX 6 When it comes to child development, making sure we prioritise swimming lessons for children under 12 is paramount. Beyond the obvious joy of splashing in the water, acquiring the life skill of swimming matters. In this brief feature we aim to present the key reasons why early swimming education is crucial. Safety First: Swimming lessons provide a vital safety net that will equip children with skills that are needed to navigate water safely. Confidence Boost: Proficient swimmers exhibit increased confidence, positively impacting their overall self-esteem and social interactions. This confidence will become evident in many areas as your children grow. Lifelong Skills: Unlike many childhood activities, swimming is a lifelong skill that endures into adulthood, offering enduring physical and mental health benefits. Physical Fitness: Swimming education enhances physical fitness, encouraging strength, endurance and greater flexibility from an early age. Social Integration: Group swimming lessons encourage really good social interaction amongst students. It teaches children skills that focus on teamwork and the art of communication. Independence and Responsibility: Learning to swim instils a sense of independence and responsibility which are crucial attributes for personal growth even at an early age. Water Confidence: Early exposure to swimming lessons helps build water confidence. In turn this will reduce anxiety around water environments whilst encouraging enjoyment. Prevention of Accidents: Acquiring swimming skills significantly reduces the risk of water-related accidents and provides an added layer of safety during play or outings. Holistic Development: Swimming education contributes to overall holistic development. It encourages physical, cognitive and emotional well-being in children. Preparation for Water Activities: Whether it's a family holiday or school outing, swimming lessons prepare children for water based activities and will ensure they are able to participate safely and enthusiastically. Swimming lessons for children go way beyond skill acquisition; they are a gateway to a safer, more confident and socially adept childhood. Any parent considering enrolling their children in swimming classes are not only investing in their immediate safety but also nurturing a lifelong skill that enhances overall well-being. Raring2go! SHOPPING, PRE-SCHOOL AND HOLIDAY CLUBS 10 The impact of reading on child development is profound and cannot be understated. It encases cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions that shape a child's growth. From the very earliest stages of infancy, exposure to books and stories contributes to the development of crucial pre-literacy skills. Rhythmic timing of sentences in language, coupled with colourful illustrations, actually stimulates neural connections and lays the groundwork for language. As children progress through different stages of development, reading plays a pivotal role in enhancing cognitive abilities. It helps language comprehension, vocabulary expansion, and the development of critical thinking skills. Exposure to diverse narratives broadens their understanding of the world, instilling a sense of curiosity and creativity. More importantly, the act of reading together promotes bonding between parents and their children, creating a positive emotional connection with books. Beyond cognitive benefits, reading has a big part to play in influencing a child’s emotional intelligence. Stories provide a safe space for children to explore often complex emotions, where they empathise with characters, and begin to master navigating their feelings. Through literature, children can encounter various situations and characters, learning valuable lessons about resilience, kindness, and understanding. This level of emotional engagement contributes to a much deeper development of empathy and compassion, crucial elements for building positive social relationships. Reading also plays a critical role in social development. Shared reading experiences create opportunities for communication and discussion, enhancing a child's verbal and social skills. Book-related activities, such as group readings or book clubs, encourage greater collaboration and the sharing of perspectives. Exposure to diverse characters and cultures within literature helps to develop an appreciation for diversity, promoting inclusivity and tolerance. Ultimately, the impact of reading on a child’s development extends far beyond that of literacy skills. It is a complex, multi layered catalyst, that nurtures cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence and social skills. By encouraging a love for reading early on, families lay the foundations for a child's holistic development, and equip them with some of the tools needed to navigate the complexities of life with curiosity, empathy, and a broadened worldview. Raring2go! WHATS ON, CLUBS AND CLASSES 22 AN EVENING IN THE LIFE OF A MUSICIAN 6.00pm: After opening up the hall we rent for our Monday choir rehearsals, the chairs need setting out (usually about 40), a table for the register, newsletters and new music, the piano and stool and the music stand at the front for the conductor. 6.15pm: People start arriving at choir. There’s a lot to do on a new music night. After people sign in and take a newsletter, they receive their library copy of the new song we are learning tonight. I’m really excited about this one; it’s called Swinging On A Star. It’s an absolute classic, but this arrangement has some comical call-andresponse phrases in as well as some beautiful harmonies. Just what you want from a choir piece. 6.30pm: We start the rehearsal with a game. The choir split into 2 groups and each learn a very similar rhythm to clap. In fact, there’s just one clap difference. One group have to count to 5, and the other have to count to 4. They have to listen very hard and concentrate on counting in order to keep their rhythm strong. It’s always a lot of fun, but there was a lot of laughter tonight, and a lot of concentrating faces in between! 8.00pm: That rehearsal flew by! After our initial warm up and games, we worked hard to learn our new song all the way through and it sounded spectacular. I think it’s going to become a new favourite. Now we have to rearrange the piano and chairs for our next rehearsal while people are leaving. 8.15pm: The second choir is smaller, but the music is harder so the concentration in the room is more intense for this session. There are usually about 8 singers but we sing in 4, sometimes 5 parts. The harmonies swirl up to the ceiling and we bask in the sound we create. We are so lucky to be able to do this every week. 9.30pm: Everyone’s gone and it’s time to tidy everything away and lock up the hall. As soon as I get back I unload the van and pack everything away so that the studio is nice and tidy for the next morning. What a day! I have the best job in the world. Home time now, and now I can relax before bedtime.
