18 raring2go.co.uk 19 Raring2go! LEARN Raring2go! WHATS ON 1 Raring2go! Hand-Me-Downs & New Beginnings Spring arrives quietly, tucked between what we’ve outgrown and what we’re ready to welcome next. Closets are opened, drawers rediscovered, and familiar pieces find new homes—passed from sibling to sibling, from parent to child, from one season of life to another. A sweater once worn oversized now fits just right. A jacket carries the soft marks of play, of afternoons spent outside, of years well lived. Hand-me-downs tell stories without words. They hold memory in their seams—proof that something loved can be loved again. But spring is also about what’s new. Fresh starts layered gently alongside the old. A first pair of grown-up shoes. A dress chosen for twirling. A shirt worn on the first warm day when sleeves are finally optional. These moments mark change, not all at once, but gradually—just like the season itself. Families move forward this way: holding on while letting go. Making room without forgetting where they’ve been. The beauty is in the balance—honouring what’s been passed down while welcoming what’s ahead. In these transitions, nothing is wasted. Everything has a place. Spring reminds us that growth doesn’t mean starting over—it means building on what already matters.

20 raring2go.co.uk 21 Raring2go! PLACES2GO Raring2go! LEARN Lets go fly a kite up to the highest height! Now we don’t want to go too deep, but Kite Flying is great for kids to learn about physics, aerodynamics, weather and ecology (with the broadest of smiles on their faces. It’s also proven that flying a kite is brilliant at helping to develop better hand-eye coordination. Plus it’s the biggest thrill ever when the wind catches it and take it soaring away! Hold a family picnic in the park Picnics are a fun and way to help escape the daily routine of mealtime. An outdoor picnic in the park is a brilliantly simple way to make an everyday event that little bit different. Eating outdoors in a group can also foster better mental health and it’s been shown to improve the habits of fussy eaters! Feeding the ducks This is a great way in which to help your children get a better understanding of nature. Kids love watching a ducks heads bobbing up and down and are amazed at their speed in racing across water to capture that tiny square of bread that has been thrown in. Make a Mothers Day Card! There are plenty of resources available to help children make that extra special mothers day card this year. The look on Mums face when she opens the ‘hand made with love card’ is will be priceless. This is a great activity to do together to really make mum feel special. Puddle Jumping There’s no upper age limit here. For some reason, even adults derive enormous pleasure from putting on their wellies for a good old puddle splashing competition! Plant a spring garden (or just a plant) Capability Brown started somewhere, probably with his parents messing around planting a few things and look where he ended up! Gardening provides family fun time plus teaches valuable lessons about mother nature at work and how things grow. Get outside! Visit a farm and spot the spring babies! There is nothing as enchanting as a childs face as they watch a lamb take its first few faltering steps. Make sure you tell your children what is happening as it is happening and then prepare yourself for a relentless barrage of questions as they witness new life beginning in a very lovely setting... Get on your BIKE! Don’t panic, most kids won’t want to cycle for miles and miles. But they’ll love that feeling of speed, power and the wind rushing by them. Make sure they’re cycle proficient before taking them on public roads. Cycling is brilliant for physical and mental wellbeing! Play Tarzan - Climb a tree Add an element of competitiveness to a tree climb by inviting them to do their best impression of Tarzan! We mean his unique wailing noise and not his agility in jumping from vine to vine or from tree to tree! Physical fun and a sense of achievement. Walk on an empty beach! If you’re lucky enough to live within a relative short drive of a beach, this is one for you.Your kids will marvel at the fact that apart from a dog walker in the distance and possibly a boat off shore, you guys have the entire beach to yourselves. Enjoy it! 1 3 2 7 6 8 9 10 4 5 10 fun Spring family activities to try!

22 raring2go.co.uk 23 Raring2go! FAMILY FUN Raring2go! LEARN 1 Raring2go! Little Adventures, Big Memories Not every adventure needs a destination. Sometimes it’s as simple as stepping outside together, with nowhere particular to be and all afternoon ahead. Spring invites families outdoors—to pathways and trails, to playgrounds and patches of grass still warming in the sun. A short walk turns into a scavenger hunt. A trip to the park becomes an hour longer than planned. These small detours are where memories quietly take shape. Kids lead the way, collecting sticks, racing ahead, stopping suddenly to point out something new. Parents follow close behind, hands full, pace unhurried. Clothes are chosen for movement and comfort—easy layers, sturdy favourites, pieces that keep up without asking for attention. There’s freedom in these moments. No schedules to keep, no expectations to meet. Just fresh air, laughter, and the simple joy of being together. Dirt on trainers. Wind-tangled hair. Sun on shoulders. Years from now, these are the days that return. Not the perfectly planned trips, but the in-between moments—the little adventures that felt ordinary at the time and became unforgettable in memory. Spring reminds us that it doesn’t take much. Just time, together, and the willingness to wander. FEATURE Four Top Toys to Support Your Child’s Talking When it comes to boosting preschool and primary school age children’s communication, you don’t need flashy gadgets or complicated programmes. Often, the simplest toys create the richest language opportunities. Here are my top five toys for supporting speech, language and early communication skills at home. Read the full article on the news pages at www.raring2go.co.uk Want more ideas like these? Visit www.sprinkleofsaltspeechandlanguagetherapy.com 1. Balloon-Powered Car Pump Why it’s brilliant: Cause-and-effect toys are gold for early communication. Children love watching the balloon inflate and the car zoom off. That predictable sequence builds attention, anticipation and interaction. Supports: Early requesting (more, again, go), turn-taking, joint attention, action words (blow, pump, go, stop). How to use it: Use simple, repetitive phrases: “Ready… steady… GO!” Pause after “ready… steady…” to give your child space to copy or anticipate. Model “more?” each time they want another turn. 2. Wooden Vehicle Puzzle Why it’s brilliant: Puzzles create natural chances for pointing, naming, matching and understanding everyday words. Vehicles are especially motivating for many young children. Supports: Vocabulary (car, bus, ambulance, fire engine), understanding simple instructions, prepositions (in, out, on), sound imitation (nee-nah, beep, brum). How to use it: Label each piece as you lift it out: “Car out!” Give clues: “Find the one that goes nee-nah.” Offer choices so your child can communicate even if they’re not yet speaking. 3. First 100 Words Book Why it’s brilliant: Books with real pictures support vocabulary, early categorisation and word-to-picture association. They’re ideal for all early communicators, including those who prefer visual learning. Supports: Everyday vocabulary, pointing and joint attention, early commenting, building understanding of categories (animals, transport, food). How to use it: Avoid quizzing - simply comment, point and model: “Look, banana… yellow banana.” Follow your child’s lead and stay on their favourite pages longer. 4. Car Ramp Run Why it’s brilliant: Repetition is a key ingredient for learning language. Car ramps offer the same predictable action again and again, helping children practise the same sounds and words with joy, not pressure. Supports: Early words (go, stop, fast, more), turn-taking, listening, predictive language (“again!” “my turn!”) How to use it: Take turns sending the car down the ramp. Before each turn, pause and wait - the pause encourages children to vocalise or gesture.
