Protecting your family against infections Introduction of the MMRV vaccine The measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chickenpox) MMRV vaccine was introduced in January as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule. The vaccine has been used in several countries for over 10 years. It has a good safety record and has dramatically reduced chickenpox cases and related hospital admissions. The vaccine will have a really positive impact on the health of young children and will lead to fewer missed days of school or nursery. Find out more at: Keep your family safe on the farm this spring Heading out for a farm adventure this spring? A few simple tips can help keep your day full of fun – and free from any unwanted buggy surprises! Farms are fantastic places for little (and big!) explorers, but even the friendliest animals can carry germs that make people unwell. Some bugs can cause more serious illness, especially in young children and pregnant women – and animals don’t have to look poorly to pass them on. With a bit of know‑how, you can enjoy all the muddy boots, cute animals and fresh air while keeping everyone healthy and happy. For tips about keeping everyone safe on farm visits, see: MMRV vaccination: a guide for parents and carers Measles update The UK recently lost its World Health Organization (WHO) measles elimination status after over 2,900 cases of measles were confirmed in England in 2024, the highest levels recorded in decades. This means it is more important than ever for all of us to be protected against the disease. Although young children will now only be offered MMRV, the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is still available for older children and adults who are not fully protected with 2 doses. It’s never too late to catch up. See more at: What is measles and why is it so important we’re up to date with our vaccines to protect against it?
