19 Drama and dance classes provide a dynamic and supportive environment for children that helps to cultivate and boost their confidence in numerous ways. First and foremost, these classes encourage self-expression. Through improvisation, role-playing, and scripted scenes, children learn to articulate their thoughts and emotions effectively. Doing this not only enhances verbal communication skills but also allows them to explore and to understand their own feelings. And this in turn contributes to a stronger sense of self. More importantly, drama classes help nurture a positive and judgment-free atmosphere. In this creative space, children are encouraged to take risks without fear of failure or criticism. The emphasis is on the process rather than just the outcome. This promotes resilience and forms a willingness to embrace challenges. As children navigate different characters and scenarios, they begin to develop a sense of adaptability and problem-solving skills which are crucial attributes that translate into confidence across various aspects of their lives. Teamwork is another fundamental aspect of drama and dance classes. Collaborating with peers on group routines and performances helps children to learn the the importance of co-operation and mutual support. They learn to listen, that to compromise is fine and to value diverse perspectives. All of which contribute to a robust foundation for interpersonal skills. The ability to work effectively with others is a key component of confidence, as children realise the value of their contributions within a group dynamic. Furthermore, the experience of performing in front of an audience, whether it's classmates, instructors or parents helps children overcome stage fright and again build self-assurance. The applause and positive feedback they will receive become affirmations of their new found capabilities, reinforcing a positive self-image. This newfound confidence extends beyond the stage and will influence academic pursuits, social interactions and many future endeavors. In essence, drama and dance classes provide a holistic platform for children to discover, explore, and celebrate their unique identities. The skills and self-assurance gained through these experiences have a lasting impact that empower them to navigate the challenges of growing up with resilience and confidence. Raring2go! Focus on Stagecoach Performing Arts Did you know performing arts education teaches children and young people so much more than singing, dancing and acting? At Stagecoach Performing Arts’ weekly classes, students develop key life skills whilst building their confidence and making new friends. This is what the Stagecoach team call Creative Courage for Life. Stagecoach classes offer children and young people a healthy way to explore self-expression in a safe and welcoming environment. They are encouraged to take ‘safe risks’ which see them challenge themselves and boost their self-esteem. For children, the process of growing their performing arts skillset week-by-week to build up to a performance piece for friends and family, encourages a growth mindset and a positive attitude to learning. It helps children realise they can successfully learn and grow by working hard and trying again Give your child Creative Courage for Life with Stagecoach Performing Arts when something doesn’t go quite right the first time. This is in addition to life skills such as:courage, resilience, creativity, empathy and teamwork which they develop as they work on performances with their peers in class. At Stagecoach, children and young people are also given the opportunity to work with experienced teachers who have the freedom and flexibility to adapt class content. Students are empowered to expand their imagination as they explore the performing arts further through their time at Stagecoach. 27 Vaccinations - Helping to protect what matters most Vaccinations are the safest way to protect all of us against serious diseases. It’s important for everyone to know what vaccines they can have, when to have them, why they are important and what to do if any have been missed. You can ‘catch up’ on most missed vaccines, whatever your age. Vaccine preventable infections can have a huge impact on your child’s life and the rest of your family. They can miss out on school due to time spent unwell, be hospitalised, and there can sometimes be devastating consequences. Declining uptake of some vaccines means that extremely infectious diseases like measles and whooping cough are spreading more easily, increasing risk to unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children. The same trends are seen across Europe and globally. Avoidable infections will increase if this continues, including in adults who do not ‘catch up’. What vaccines are advised? See www.nhs.uk/nhs-vaccinations-andwhen-to-have-them/ for recommended routine vaccines across all age groups, including seasonal vaccines. Are your child’s vaccines up to date? • Check their Red Book • Check with your GP practice Find out about vaccines and the diseases they protect against For trusted independent information about vaccines, how they work, what is in them and common side effects see https://vaccineknowledge.ox.ac.uk/home How to ‘catch up’ • Contact your GP (all ages) • The Surrey School Aged Immunisation Service deliver all immunisations due when your child is at school (and if they are home schooled) and can also advise on community catch up clinics: https://surreychildandfamily.co.uk/ services/immunisations/ Rachel Wigglesworth Director of Public Health (interim) Surrey County Council
