Raring2go! PLAY YOUR PART 10 The capital campaign to transform the Yvonne Arnaud into a cultural community hub with theatre at its core. The theatre is there for everyone, whether they choose to see a play, take part in a workshop, or event, or meet a friend for coffee. The building and the work enable people of all ages from across Surrey to come together. The year-long capital project, Play Your Part, will improve accessibility throughout the front of house areas. This includes the provision of a lift to all floors and new accessible toilets; create a multi-purpose accessible community room for engagement activities, events, rehearsals and workshops. There will also be a remodel of the public spaces to meet the growing demand for these areas and improve the theatre’s environmental sustainability by replacing outdated Play Your Part electrical and mechanical services with energy efficient alternatives. Upon completion of the project, the theatre will become a cultural and community hub, able to better serve Surrey and beyond. Shows will re-start in September and the theatre will remain open throughout the works with a great programme of entertainment. Panto will be unaffected by the works and will run as usual. So far the theatre has raised £5.06m including the generous support of Your Fund Surrey. They still need to generate a further £830,000 in order to complete the planned works, revolutionising the beautiful theatre; making it accessible, sustainable and fit for purpose for future generations To find out more about the project, visit: www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk/play-your-part

We, Lauren, a Virtual Assistant, and Jo, an Instagram Coach, founded Women’s Work Social to escape the monotony of working from home and re-establish in-person connections after the pandemic. It started with a small group of like-minded women balancing family life with a passion for business, and quickly grew into a genuine community offering real support. Fast forward two and a half years, and we’ve gathered hundreds of fabulous business women from Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire. From garden designers and photographers to nutritionists and accountants, we’ve attracted a diverse group of women who share a common goal: to support one another without judgment. So, how do we keep the connections going? We offer a range of in-person events designed to support and develop you as a business owner while ensuring you have fun along the way. Evening Socials: Because everyone deserves a night out! These events are the perfect excuse to escape the house and widen your network. Business Bites: Our most popular events. Spend a morning expanding your business knowledge while connecting over coffee and croissants. Co-Working Sessions: Working from home doesn’t have to be lonely. Join us to get some work done, bounce ideas around, and meet other awesome business owners in your area. 1. Do Your Homework: Before the open day, research the school thoroughly. Familiarise yourself with its ethos, academic performance, extracurricular offerings, and any unique programs. This background knowledge will help you ask more informed questions and evaluate whether the school aligns with your child’s needs and your family’s values. 2. Prepare a List of Questions: Prepare a list of questions that address your main concerns. These could range from academic standards and class sizes to support for special educational needs or the school’s approach to student wellbeing. Consider asking about the teaching philosophy, homework expectations, discipline policies, and how the school handles bullying or conflicts. Tailor your questions to your child’s specific needs and interests. 3. Observe the Atmosphere: Pay close attention to the school’s atmosphere. Observe how staff and students interact with each other. Are the students engaged and happy? Does the school have a welcoming and inclusive environment? The behaviour of students and staff can give you a good indication of the school’s culture and whether it would be a positive setting for your child. Getting the most out of Open Days 4. Engage with Teachers and Staff: Take the time to speak with teachers, the headteacher, and other key staff members. Ask about their teaching styles, experience, and how they support students’ individual needs. The openness and enthusiasm of the staff can tell you a lot about the school’s commitment to education and student development. 5. Tour the Facilities: Explore the school’s facilities thoroughly. Visit the classrooms, library, sports facilities, and any specialised areas like science labs or art studios. Assess the condition of the facilities and whether they seem wellmaintained and equipped to support a diverse curriculum. 6. Talk to Current Students and Parents: If possible, speak with current students and their parents. They can provide valuable insights into the day-to-day life at the school and how well it meets their expectations. Ask about their experiences, including what they like most and what they think could be improved. 7. Reflect and Compare: After the open day, take some time to reflect on your visit. Compare it with other schools you’ve visited. Consider how well the school’s offerings match your child’s needs and aspirations. Raring2go! EDUCATION 28 Attending a prospective school open day is an excellent opportunity to get a firsthand look at the environment where your child could be spending a significant part of their formative years. European Day of Languages Raring2go! EDUCATION 30 PREPARATORY SCHOOL & NURSERY Bear Hunt Open Morning Sunday 6th October 10am – 12pm We warmly invite you to visit our outstanding school. To book your place at our open morning please visit www.rydeshill.com. Celebrated on 26th September, the European Day of Languages is designed to promote awareness of the importance of language learning and linguistic heritage. We spoke to Cecile Greener, a Haslemerebased private Tutor in French and Italian, for her top tips for promoting languages at home: Why not try: • Switching your kids’ favourite Netflix show to French (Paw Patrol … Miraculous… Enjoy!) • Set up tablets and devices to different languages? • Read a bit every night in local language if you can… • Practice numbers on the road, in supermarkets…numbers are everywhere, just read them out loud! • Cook pasta in Italian (www.galbani.it/) • Manners in Italian sound better …per favore, grazie …select a few and stick to them! Learning a foreign language is excellent for cognitive development, cultural awareness, and known to boost academic performance, social skills and future work opportunities. There are plenty of resources online as well… BBC bitesize is excellent! So keep it up and don’t be afraid to try! Worst case scenario... it works? Young children are naturally curious and resilient. They enjoy watching their lego tower fall to the ground as toddlers and we have most likely all seen joy and anticipation as they remove the case from a fragile sandcastle not sure if it is going to stand tall or not. As children start school this curiosity and natural ability to learn through failing can start to ebb away. By even six years old children are aware of ‘results’ and compare their achievements with others. If we are able to provide safe, fun spaces for children and encourage them to continue to be curious and to learn by making mistakes, their resilience both inside and outside of the classroom is much more likely to be secure. If we remove risk and challenge the result is that children do not have a sense of having achieved for themselves. How then can we build resilience and nurture curiosity in primary aged pupils? A very important ingredient is outdoor play and opportunities for children to play across age groups. If can make learning an adventure both inside and outside of the classroom success will come. Let’s go on an adventure! Extra-curricular activities are also important as these allow children to develop their own talents and interests which often require different skills from those needed in the classroom. Hobbies require some commitment and a sense of seeing something through to an end result whether that be baking, learning a musical instrument or touch rugby. Educational visits and residential trips are key to building confidence and important adventures in themselves. We encourage these at St Catherine’s and build a programme which ensures that children are taking steps to be away from home for one night in Year 3 to four nights away in Year 6. Such experiences may start with a visit to a local farm and culminate in children rock climbing and abseiling. Regardless of the nature of the visit, working with peers in a different context and environment often with different adults too are very valuable experiences. It is also often the case that we observe leadership in children when outside of the classroom and particularly when out of their comfort zone. Again, this can easily then be encouraged back in class when working collaboratively to solve a problem. If there are opportunities to take your child on an adventure this summer, grasp them. Whether that be a day at the seaside, time in the garden or local park or trying a new skill or activity. You will see their courage, curiosity and confidence develop as a result.
