EDUCATION Beyond the Prospectus: What to Look for When You Visit a School Autumn means school open day season, as families start making decisions about where their children will go next September. With the deadline for secondary school applications on 31st October 2026 and Reception applications closing on 15th January 2027, now is the time to visit potential schools and find out what they’re really like. Websites, prospectuses and Ofsted reports can tell you plenty, but sometimes it’s the little things you notice when you walk through the door that tell you most. Look at the children Do pupils seem happy, relaxed and confident? Notice how they interact with teachers and each other. If pupils are showing you around, ask what they like most about their school. Take in the surroundings Look beyond impressive facilities. Do classrooms feel welcoming? Is children’s own work displayed and celebrated? Most importantly, can you imagine your child feeling comfortable there? Watch how staff interact Notice how teachers speak to pupils in classrooms and corridors. Warm, natural interactions can reveal a lot about the culture of a school. Ask about everyday life Find out about homework, clubs, wraparound care, communication with parents and how children are supported when they need extra help. Finally, trust your instincts. Try to picture your child walking through those doors each morning – sometimes that tells you more than any prospectus can.
