3 Raring2go! 2 HELLO Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk I’m busy writing this and preparing this brilliant Spring edition of Raring2go! (even if I do say so myself!) On Valentines Day. Despite it only being mid-Feb, it’s feeling quite Spring like making me excited about everything going on over the coming months with Easter just around the corner followed by The King’s Coronation. We’ve packed this issue with loads of ideas of places to go and things to do this Spring. You can read all about one of my favourite events, Merrist Wood’s Fleecy Frolics weekend which is happening at the end of April and never disappoints! Also make sure you check out Ascot’s Spring Family Raceday at the start of April too for a great family day out. And even though we are entering the warmer months the theatres still have some cracking shows on with the Smeds & The Smoos visiting The Yvonne Arnaud, the Pop Diva’s visiting Camberley and The Ministry of Science at G Live, there is something for everyone! And there really is something for everyone in this magazine with our What’s On for Grown Up’s guide too. Why should us parents get left out? Please make sure you visit our website which is updated with all that is going on locally on a regular basis. You can tell it your location and see everything our local area has to offer this Spring. Simply visit raring2go.co.uk and select your location. You’ll also be able to enter all our competitions there too including tickets to Shynefest, Winchester Science Centre, AirHop and more! I’ll be back in the summer but until then please keep your eye on our instagram and website so you don’t miss out! Hello! This Spring, leave the everyday behind as you and your family explore the world's first Jumanji themed land - World of Jumanji - only at Chessington. Escaped from the cinema and way beyond a board game, World of Jumanji sucks families in.... follow in the footsteps of Dr. Bravestone through a whole world of adventures to locate the Jaguar's Eye Jewel, lift the curse and save Jumanji. Brave adventurers will discover deep in World of Jumanji, not just one, but THREE new rides including the world’s ONLY Jumanji rollercoaster and Chessington’s first ever inversion, Mandrill Mayhem. Get swept up in the long arms of a mandrill, the most fearsome of all the animals, and launch at full speed through the treetops flipping upside down on a hair-raising adventure, spiralling to the summit of the 55ft tall Jaguar Shrine. Glimpse the Jaguar’s Eye Jewel glow before falling and braving the adventure again… backwards. Families’ second adventure takes place in the dunes on Ostrich Stampede. Swerve a herd of stampeding ostriches on this whirlwind trip. Ostriches may be flightless birds, but this is going to be a bumpy ride. The third adventure can be found in the bazaar; dodge the fangs of the black mamba on a dizzying, untameable ride, Mamba Strike. There’s not a moment to lose… adventurers must jump on and hold tight - the black mamba is about to strike! PLUS navigate the pathways of the Jungle Maze in the heart of the land and encounter challenges and quests, some trickier than others, based on the iconic Jumanji game board. As a father of two girls of primary school age, I have a vested interest in the educational options available to them. That being said, I think I’m safe in saying that I am not your stereotypical advocate of girls’ only education As the son of a coal miner and having been educated in co-ed state schools in south Wales, girls’ only education was something that didn’t enter my consciousness until I moved to Surrey in 2013. Whilst I was aware that many of highest achieving schools in the area were single-sex, I didn’t really stop and think about the benefits of a girls’ only environment until I came to work in a girls’ only school myself. The first thing that struck me when I began teaching a class made up entirely of girls was that roles within the classroom that were almost always filled by boys in a co-ed classroom (the joker, the loud child, the sporty child, etc.) were now occupied by girls. This also extended to the academic subjects. Science, mathematics and PE were no longer ‘boys’ subjects’. But what about the ‘real world’ where girls and boys have to coexist? Are girls at girls’ only schools at a disadvantage? I would argue that they’re not. Whilst they The importance of a Girls’ Only education may not mix with boys on a daily basis, single-sex schools offer opportunities for girls and boys to learn together when and where appropriate - this may be in mixed teams at maths, science or chess competitions. Furthermore, they have more opportunities to take on leadership roles than their peers in co-ed settings. I truly believe that girls’ only education proves beneficial to the vast majority of the girls that come through our schoolgates, however every child is unique and as a parent it is important to consider the needs of your child. I asked both my daughters whether they wanted to attend a girls’ only school before enrolling them. My eldest had attended our local co-ed infant school whilst my youngest was in a coed nursery. Both were extremely eager to join a girls’ only school and are having a wonderful time. I believe that the absence of boys gives my girls space to develop a strong sense of themselves and their values without the pressure of gender stereotypes. Girls schools were established to try and offer girls the educational opportunities that had long been afforded to boys and I believe that they still have an important role to play in further enhancing opportunities for women today.
