Book your place rgsg.co.uk Open Morning - The Good Schools Guide “ ” Wednesday 12 March An independent day school for boys and girls aged 2 - 11yrs old. Barfield is a happy, caring, nurturing environment. Our focus is on the whole child, building confidence while achieving great things. Discover Barfield Book your personal tour now Barfield Prep School, Guildford Rd, Runfold, Farnham GU10 1PB, T: 01252 782271 www.barfieldpst.org THE IMPACT OF VAT ON PRIVATE SCHOOLS In January 2025, the UK government implemented a significant policy change by imposing a 20% Value Added Tax (VAT) on private school fees, a move aimed at generating additional revenue to enhance state education. This decision has sparked considerable debate regarding its financial implications for independent schools, parents, and the broader educational landscape. Mr Andy Boyle, headmaster of Barfield Prep gives us his views… As Independent Schools embark on a new chapter which now includes the addition of VAT on private school fees, the debate very much continues to rumble on as to the supposed benefits that this shift will actually bring over the short and long term. Creating additional revenue for state education, funding more teachers, addressing disparities between private and state schooling and creating a more equitable education system are the general ideas behind the tax and I, along with many I imagine, will be keen to see how this unfolds over the coming years and if the state system can cope with the potential volume of children trying to access a state school place. When asked what this means for prep schools like Barfield - while we are very realistic to the fact that some of our parents will undoubtedly be having conversations around what the future might look like from a schooling perspective - we believe that our attention and focus is best spent on making our school the best it can possibly be. It has never been more important to have a clear identity and to promote those USP’s which have been pertinent to the success of our schools over the years. For us, the provision of our incredibly popular all-year-round Nursery is providing parents with an early taste of Barfield Life and an introduction to our Broad, Balanced and Holistic approach to education - with academic rigour supported by lessons such as Current Affairs, Life Skills and Outdoor Learning / Sustainability - ensuring that our children leave us at 11 with much more than just an academic CV. Behind the scenes we, like many other independent schools, are working tirelessly to identify ways in which we can further support our parents and for Barfield and Prep Schools Trust schools this has included reducing the net fee by 5% in order to reduce the increase in gross fees for parents from 20% to 14%. Value for money and added value have always been important to our parents and we have certainly felt a shift in expectation in recent months as parents question the feasibility of the independent school journey. With the announcement of independent school closures both locally and nationally, now is certainly not the time for complacency but the time to sweat the small things as we tentatively wait to see what impact this change will have on our schools - while remaining very confident in who we are and what makes Barfield so special. 30 raring2go.co.uk 31 What happens when you let your child guide you in their play? Are you digging for worms, participating in elaborate rituals that introduce one soft toy to one another or travelling to an imaginary land with Lego? Are you surprised, impressed and in awe of your child’s imagination and curiosity? From our earliest days, play is how we relate to the world, and to each other. When children have plenty of opportunities to engage in child-led play, they do what they do best: pursue their natural curiosity and build skills and aptitudes they will keep for life. For our PreSchool girls, play is an intrinsic part of their day. When children play, no matter what it looks like, they learn. Play is one of the most important ways children learn and develop. It is as important as eating fruit, story time together and having a good night’s sleep. Friedrich Froebel, an educational theorist, had firm views on play and its place in child development, believing that it fostered enjoyment, emotional well-being and physical growth. Every day at Pre-School is an adventure for our girls, learning through child-led and adult-led play. One minute they are stomping through the woods on a bear hunt and the next they are pretending to be a vet bandaging the toy dog’s tail. During imaginative play, children get to be anyone, anything and anywhere. Children will use all sorts of items to symbolise things and ideas during their play. Through imaginative play children learn critical thinking skills, how to follow simple directions, build expressive and receptive language, increase social skills and learn how to manage their emotions. Our Pre-School girls enjoy play-based experiences interwoven through their day, enabling them to flourish and develop a love of learning. Play is one of the fundamentals of language development. Specifically, play helps with language because they watch, they listen, they explore, they imitate, and it is fun. Play also supports social interaction, which is another fundamental of language development. So much of communication is based on body language, posture, facial expression and conversational skills. Our daily Circle time is key to giving the girls the opportunity to develop their conversational skills, such as the nature of conversation and remaining on topic. Play provides an environment which is rich in motivation, experience and social reward. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our Pre-School girls form relationships, learn about themselves and blossom into confident, curious and motivated learners – all through play. www.stcatherines.info/pre-school St Catherine’s Pre-School is for girls aged 3, open 8am to 6pm and led by their Deputy Head, Head of Pre-Prep and early years professional, Emily Jefford. 34 raring2go.co.uk Sending your little one to a holiday camp for the first time can feel daunting, especially if they’re still in preschool. For many families, holiday camps are an essential form of childcare during school breaks, so it’s natural to hope your child enjoys the experience. FIRST, LET’S DISCUSS THE LEGAL ASPECT OF IT: Start by ensuring the camp is OFSTED registered. In the UK, any childcare provider caring for children under five for more than four hours must be registered with OFSTED. This guarantees a level of safety and quality in their care. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE CAMP Begin talking to your child about the camp in the weeks leading up to it. Explain what they can expect and reassure them that plenty of other first-time campers will be there too. Your enthusiasm will help build their confidence! Look into the activities planned—many camps, like ours, share schedules on social media so children can familiarize themselves with what’s ahead. Check out the camp staff online if possible. At MuddyBoots, we introduce our team on our website to help children feel comfortable before arrival. Booking with a friend or sibling can also make the transition smoother. Our camp ensures siblings and friends can stay together, making the experience even more enjoyable. PRACTICAL TIPS FOR A GREAT CAMP EXPERIENCE Dress for the Weather It might seem obvious, but it’s surprising how often children arrive in inappropriate clothing. If it’s chilly and rainy, shorts and a t-shirt won’t keep them warm! On colder days, pack a waterproof coat, hat, gloves, and tracksuit bottoms. A change of clothes is also a great TIPS FOR PARENTS PREPARING FOR THEIR CHILD’S FIRST HOLIDAY CAMP idea in case they get wet. It’s always better to have extra layers than to be too cold with nothing to wear. Book with an older sibling or bring a friend. Having a familiar face nearby can ease any firstday nerves. Regardless of age, trying something new is always easier with a friend. While they’ll eventually make new friends, having someone they know can make the first few days much more comfortable. Consider a Half-Day Option Easing your child into camp with a half-day session can be a great way to introduce them to the experience. Often, they’ll enjoy it so much that they won’t want to leave—but ending the day on a positive note will keep them excited for next time! Pack a Special Lunch & Snacks! Never underestimate the power of a great packed lunch! Knowing they have a delicious treat to look forward to can make a big difference in their excitement for camp. Some kids get more excited about their lunch than the activities themselves! Relax—They’ll Be Fine! While it’s natural to worry, 99% of kids settle in quickly and have a fantastic time. Often, it’s the parents who feel more anxious! The earlier they start, the sooner they’ll see camp as part of their routine—nothing beats a full day of fun and play with friends.
