Raring2go! FAMILY CAMPING 18 Endless Play! Camping at Wellington Country Park I have to admit I’m a fairly novice camper. I’ve only been once before, and I have to say I came away with mixed feelings. I love being outdoors and sitting around the fire, having fun with friends and watching the kids having running about. The part I didn’t like was the facilities! Call me a snob but a hole in the ground as a toilet is not my idea of fun! So, earlier this year I was really excited to be invited to camp for a weekend at Wellington Country Park. A weekend, which I can honestly say I would happily do every single weekend this summer if I could! Wellington Country Park in Hampshire has always been a favourite of mine for a family day out. It’s beautifully rural but easily accessible and there is so much to do. When we have visited before a day has never really felt long enough which is why camping really appealed because the best part about camping at Welly Park is that you have access to the park day and night! We arrived on Friday evening having travelled after school. Even though we arrived after the normal check in window had closed it was easy for us to find our pitch and we were provided with all the info we needed to get us started. We easily found our woodland home for the weekend, a gorgeous area which felt really private and perfect for us and the two other families we had invited with us. While the parents (Dad’s!) started putting up the tents the kids were free to explore! The freedom they had throughout the weekend really did make it. They were so happy going off on adventures in their PJ’s and we were happy knowing they were safe and having a good time. The campfire was soon lit and the marshmallows were toasting as we sat back and enjoyed our first evening at Welly Park. Saturday morning was an early start, who knew singing birds were so loud at 5am! We also had four very excited children who were keen to get into the park and start to explore. The thing about Welly Park is every time you turn a corner there is something else to do whether it be an adventure playground, the farm, mini golf, the fairy garden, the dinosaurs or a trampoline. There is just so much to keep little ones occupied! We spent all day Saturday enjoying the park including a yummy lunch at Café 1815 which serves both hot and cold food throughout the day and there is something for even the fussiest of children. After a long day exploring the park we headed back to the campsite where we lit the BBQ and enjoyed a feast all of which we had purchased from the Wellington Farm Shop earlier in the

19 FAMILY CAMPING Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk Off camping this Summer? Having had a fantastic camping trip at Wellington Country Park we’ve collated together some of our favourite camping hacks for an enjoyable camping experience this Summer! 1 It’s a good idea to test your tent in your garden before you go to familiarise yourself with it and help avoid campsite arguments when putting it up! 2 Use a foldable car boot tidy as tent storage. Kept at the front of your tent, one holds muddy shoes and the other toys! It stops mud being transferred into your tent. 3 Pack an extra insulated picnic blanket to pop under your air beds- it prevents cold air creeping up through them! 4 Keep your clothes dry in your tent by storing them in plastic bags or waterproof storage bags- nobody likes damp clothes! Camping Hacks 5 Pack everything in clear plastic tubs for easy camping organisation! It means everything is easy to find when you arrive. 6 Buy some glow sticks and string them together to make a necklace to keep track of your children if they are playing outside when it gets dark (although hopefully with all that fresh air they will be fast asleep by then - ha! Who are we kidding…) 7 Invest in a multi camping tool – it has scissors, screwdrivers, can opener, bottle opener – the list goes on! It means you only have to bring one tool instead of multiple things to remember. 8 Be prepared for early starts and early nights! Have fun and enjoy creating some really special memories. day. As I have already mentioned, I do like my home comforts so for me one of the huge plus points of Welly Park was the camping facilities. For a start they have toilets and they are clean! In fact, very clean. They also have showers which actually do have hot water and again are super clean. There is an area to do washing up and they even have washing machines and tumble dryers available if needed. There is a freezer for storing ice blocks and a charging point for charging electronic devices. I can’t fault the facilities at all and when you are camping with kids having good facilities really does make life easier! On Sunday we woke up to spend our last day at Wellington Country Park before heading home. We lucked out with the weather so the kids were able to enjoy the splash park and revisit all their favourite parts from the previous day. Nobody wanted to leave and we all said if it weren’t for school and work the next day we definitely would have asked to stay another night. If you were asked to describe your perfect camping trip, you would without knowing it be describing a weekend camping at Welly Park. I honestly can’t wait to go again and I think this will now become an annual trip for our family. We all agreed it really was a special weekend and all the children have asked to go back, there were even tears from my daughter about leaving! Raring2go! EDUCATION 34 AT FRENSHAM, WE BELIEVE THAT SCHOOL SHOULD BE AN ADVENTURE - where children actively engage with their learning through exploring and questioning. Most importantly, school should be a place they want to go to every day - a place that makes them happy. With our broad curriculum, each child can discover what they really love. From Nursery upwards, our children have dedicated art, music and performance classes every week as well as sport, IT and languages. We get outside as much as possible in our dedicated forest school, extensive woodlands, outdoor play areas and flexible outdoor classroom areas. In the world of education, the wellbeing of students is like the compass guiding their journey – a fundamental aspect that shapes not just academic success but the overall experience of learning and growing. Schools are not just places of learning; they are the foundation for building well-rounded individuals ready to face the challenges of life. Academic success should not come at the expense of a student’s overall wellbeing. Schools are where children learn to socialise, make friends and deal with all the ups and downs of life. By focusing on their wellbeing, we are helping them build social skills, empathy and resilience. The result? Children who are not just academically able but also emotionally intelligent, ready to face the complexities of the real world. Here at St Catherine’s Prep School, we pride ourselves on our holistic approach to education. By prioritising our girl’s wellbeing, we are not just helping them feel good; we are boosting their brainpower. A healthy mind does not memorise facts; it thinks creatively, critically and stays engaged in the learning process. In providing a positive school environment, we are not only improving outcomes but also instilling a genuine love for learning making education a lifelong adventure. We recognise that academic success is intrinsically linked to mental and emotional health, and as such we have introduced a number of innovative programmes to support the balance. These include the Wellbeing pod and the use of Wellbeing and Playground Ambassadors. These help to create a supportive and nurturing environment in which the girls are happy and able to thrive. Our Playground and Wellbeing Ambassadors at invaluable at playtime, ensuring that every girl at St Catherine’s feels supported and included. The importance of play in a child’s development cannot be overstated and these Ambassadors play a crucial role in A Holistic Approach to Education fostering an environment where everyone can engage in healthy social interactions. In addition, we have the ‘Place to Talk’, ‘Place to Be and ‘Place to Play’ initiatives which run every Friday. The ‘Place to Be’ offers a tranquil environment to recharge and find peace during the school week by taking part in calming and mindful activities. The ‘Place to Talk’ provides the opportunity for girls to openly talk, share their experiences and connect with their peers whilst the ‘Place to Play’ initiative focuses on exploring music and song writing as a creative outlet for expressing feelings. A key too, in any school is the Pastoral team who play a pivotal role in shaping a school’s culture. Our own Pastoral team are not just mentors ; they are champions of mental health, promoting positive wellbeing practices among not only the girls but staff as well. Through workshops and awareness campaigns, the Pastoral team contribute to the creation of a supportive community where both girls and staff feel valued. By having programmes that address mental health openly, we are not just tackling stigma; we are providing a safety net for girls to talk about their worries and get the support they need to help prevent bigger issues developing down the road by equipping them with the tools to cope with life’s challenges. By placing happiness and mental health on the priority list, we are not just nurturing minds; we are setting the stage for futures filled with promise and balance. Happy minds lead to bright futures.
