23 Raring2go! NEW YEAR GOALS 22 FAMILY SERVICES Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk Emese from Fun Mum’s Fitness in Woking gives us her top tips for staying motivated in 2023… First, we need to understand that motivation is a feeling. Like any other feelings (sadness, happiness) it comes and goes, so it is normal not to always feel motivated. Let me tell you that even personal trainers have this issue very often too! However, we do need to find a way to overcome of the dip in motivation and how to avoid completely falling off the wagon. Let me share a few tips that can help you to stay on track with your fitness journey even if you experience a lack of motivation! 1: Firstly, you are more likely to feel motivated if you choose an exercise or sport which you really enjoy doing so you will feel like you want to do it, it will then feel easier to stick to. 2: Find an exercise partner so you can keep each other motivated and accountable. 3: Set achievable goals. If you set non-realistic goals like losing 20% of your body weight in a week… it will make you feel deflated and unmotivated. 4: Write your goals onto a piece of paper and stick it onto different spots of your home. Seeing it often will help to keep it a focus for you! 5: Track your progress! Have a chart and put your results onto it week by week. This can be body measurements, time spent on exercising, increase MAINTAINING YOUR FITNESS GOALS IN 2023! of a weight you could lift, distance of your runs or even weekly steps. Seeing it in black and white can help give you a boost and remind you of your progress even on the tough days. 6: Get help to get back into routine from a professional. Having booked appointments in your diary will make you avoid finding excuses and push you to attend your sessions. 7: Treat yourself with rewards (Not a slice of cake after your exercise session!) For example, you may like to get yourself some new leggings or trainers which you like Ultimately, motivation is a mindset game! In summary, if we can set ourselves realistic goals, alongside doing something enjoyable with a friend, trainer or family member, we are more likely to succeed and turn hobbies into habits! Websites are great, and word of mouth is invaluable. At some point, however, parents will find themselves going on Open Days and trying to find the right school for their little one. Here’s some guidance (and a few handy questions to ask) from Matthew Bryan, Headmaster at Longacre School in Shamley Green. Choosing an Early Years setting for your child, whether that’s pre-school or Reception, is a daunting business. Not only do parents bear the responsibility of finding a worthy provider and dealing with technical jargon about phonics and frameworks, but also there is the pressure of the here and now: what if my child cries? What should we wear? What is a ‘good’ question to ask? I can help with some of that… NAPS, SNACKS AND CLOTHING Dress up as much as you want to, but this should never be a pressure. You’re there to judge the school, NOT the other way around! Aim for comfort, bring a buggy if that helps, bear in mind that somewhere with Forest School might take you outdoors and into the mud. Bring snacks if you like, just remember that schools are invariably nut-free environments. Some parents prefer to come with their child, some on their own and others bring aunts, uncles, grandparents etc. No rights or wrongs here, do whatever you need to get the feedback you’re looking for. Many parents will come to an open day at Longacre and then book for a private tour afterwards, a bit like doing a second viewing on a house! NOW OR THE FUTURE? One of the questions which I get asked a lot is whether parents should prioritise the Early Years provision at a school, or consider the ‘long game’, which might include such considerations as SATS THINKING ABOUT A FIRST SCHOOL? results or even university success rates! Without hesitation or equivocation I would always urge parents to do what is right for their child now. It doesn’t happen often, but I dread hearing of parents putting their child in a nursery or a Reception class that they don’t like, because the setting concerned has a reputation for getting results at one level or another. Trust your gut and remember that caring for a child and enabling them to get great academic results (whatever that might mean for an individual child) are not an either/or; they should be part and parcel of the right approach to brilliant education. Questions whose answers will tell you a lot about a setting • How do you ensure that children settle in quickly? • What is the balance of time that children spend 1:1 with an adult, versus playing with their friends? *note, there’s no ‘right answer’ to this – different parents will want different things, and individual children also have differing needs • How much time do children spend outdoors? • What is your opinion of play-based learning? • How do you inform parents what progress a child is making? Perhaps the most important piece of advice is to see a school ‘for real’ rather than trusting to a website or reputation. Don’t assume that the most expensive setting will offer the best provision, particularly if a child’s happiness is your principal concern. Follow your gut instincts and do what you feel is best for your child. Good luck! 27 Raring2go! From a very young age sport has moulded me into the person I am today. As a result of this, I have been inspired to teach because of the motivation and transformation that sports has brought to me and those around me. I believe that sport has the power to change lives and it is our role to inspire and enthuse children to develop a love of PE. I believe in an inclusive approach to sports and providing opportunities at many different levels where we can celebrate everyone’s success, regardless of ability. From athletes in the very early stages of a successful sports career performing to National level, to providing all children with the opportunities to play proudly represent their school, I believe our aim is to develop self-belief, confidence and a desire for the children to achieve their very best. St Catherine’s Prep School offers a full and varied sporting programme for all the girls. In Pre-Prep the girls have four PE lessons a week where they develop their fundamental movement skills alongside handeye co-ordination in games, stroke technique in swimming and balancing skills in gymnastics. Teaching these skills in Pre-Prep forms the building blocks to more advanced techniques and game strategy as they move through the Prep School. The girls have five PE lessons a week with a varied SPORT FOR ALL curriculum including netball, gymnastics, swimming, cricket, athletics, cross country, and football. The staff to pupil ratio is low and all PE lessons are taught by qualified PE teachers with a broad range of specialisms but always with a genuine passion for developing and nurturing the skills of every individual. Physical Education plays an integral role in the health and wellbeing of our girls and a varied PE curriculum alongside a variety of extra-curricular opportunities has a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of the children. By embedding sport in their daily life, this often develops a life-long love of sport. The sports curriculum is complimented with a broad and varied extra-curricular programme where all children have the opportunity to further develop their skills learned in lessons and train together in preparation for netball and cricket matches, swimming galas, cross country, gymnastics, Biathlon and athletics events. Many of our teams progress to National level but everyone who attends clubs represents St Catherine’s in competition and we value and celebrate all success while also teaching the girls to deal gracefully with defeat. Register online: altonschool.co.uk Reception - Year 6 Open Morning Friday 27 January Educating boys and girls from 6 months to Sixth Form Geraldine Mooney, Director of Lower School at Alton School talks about the bright future for children. It’s been a tough few years during which time schools, teachers, families and most importantly children have overcome hurdles never previously experienced in education, but as Mrs Mooney explains, “Children have an incredible ability to adapt and bounce back and it’s up to us to show the positives and teach them to harness the skills they have begun to learn and will need. By exposing our youngsters to a wide curriculum and encouraging their passions and levels of creativity, pupils learn to think for themselves, question what is going on around them. It makes a huge difference if critical thinking together with soft skills such as teamwork, resilience and empathy are developed from an early stage. A happy child who knows they are known and understood is key to what we offer at Alton School and is central to how well a child will progress academically and socially. We actively listen to our pupils because they thrive in an environment of trust and care and will quickly learn that it is okay to make mistakes. All of this Putting the Positive into Education for our youngest learners will enhance their joy of learning and equip them to influence change in the future. Alton School welcomes children from 6 months through to Sixth Form. Pre-school children have regular learning time with our Reception teacher and all pupils from Reception onwards benefit from specialist teaching in Art, Music, Drama, Computer Science, PE and Spanish. Year 6 pupils are taught by Senior School staff for all subjects, helping ease their transition into Senior School.
