Although it seems like only minutes ago that myself and my team were out distributing the Autumn edition of Raring2go, the winter edition is now upon us! As always we are lucky to have a huge range of events that are going on all over Ripon, Harrogate, Knaresborough, York, Malton, Leeds and many places inbetween. I have worked hard to find activities and experiences for all budgets, as with taxes going up and energy bills sky high I know that many of us are keeping an anxious eye on the pennies over Christmas. The events and experiences in the magazine either provide great value for money, are low cost or in some instances are even free. We also have exclusive discounts (such as for the Ticktock Unlock experience on p26) and competitions to enter on our website. I have included a real range of event locations too, so that if travelling too far is a problem (petrol costs are definitely another concern), hopefully there will be something on your doorstep. FInally, we have lots of great low cost nature, craft and recipe ideas, providing different ways to enjoy the Winter months. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Jennie

12 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! RARING2MAKE Ingredients and utensils you’ll need 175g unsalted butter, 100g caster sugar, 50g dark muscovado sugar, 4 tablespoons golden syrup, 200g plain flour, 150g wholemeal plain flour, 1 tablespoon good quality cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, pinch of salt Additional items: baking sheet, baking paper, icing nozzle, cookie cutters, ribbon, palette knife. 1.First, using a bowl big enough to contain all of the ingredients, sift together both of the flours, cocoa powder, ginger, cinnamon and bicarbonate of soda. Add a good pinch of salt. 2. Place the butter, sugar and golden syrup into a heavy bottomed saucepan. Place the pan over a low heat and stir occasionally until everything has melted to make a smooth mixture. Pour this liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon. Mix well to make a firm dough. 3. Tip out the dough onto a lightly floured worktop and wait until the dough is cool enough to handle before kneading. Gently knead until you have a supple dough – be sure not to over-work the dough though. 4. Line a baking sheet with baking paper and preheat the oven to 180º. Now roll out the dough to a 1cm thickness, ensuring the worktop is lightly floured to prevent the dough sticking. Cut out your shapes using cookie cutters of your choice. Remember to cut out holes if you’re going to be hanging your cooked biscuits. A nozzle tip makes a handy tool for cutting small holes. A palette knife is useful for transferring the cut cookies to the baking sheet. If you have time, chilling the cut shapes on the baking sheet before cooking also helps to prevent the dough from spreading when baking. Baking time takes around 12 minutes but can vary from oven to oven. When baked, remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack. The biscuits will firm up when they cool down. 5. Optional extra... when cool, the biscuits can be decorated with royal icing available from most high streets. Disposable piping bags are great for little hands, making it easy for the kids to decorate their cookies. 6. Finally, thread some ribbon through the holes in the cookies to hang on the tree. It may be worth baking a big batch – as these will probably not last long! Raring2make! 21 Raring2go! FEATURES In December there’s one warming treat that is especially welcomed. This treat is popular the world over as delicious way of keeping the cold at bay. You’ve guessed it… we’re talking about Roast Chestnuts. They are more often seen at this time of year than any other. You’ll spot them being cooked by street food vendors at Christmas markets, fetes and along the road. The spicy scent is strong and is instantly recognised by our keen sense of smell. It is said that a mere passing waft from a chestnut which is roasting slowly, is more than enough to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. Chestnuts have a long and auspicious history. One of the world’s greatest military generals, Alexander the Great, together with the Romans, is reported to have planted chestnuts all across Europe. The trees that were planted spread from the mountainous Mediterranean regions where it was known that certain grains did not to grow well. Chestnuts quickly became a staple and versatile food source for locals and a form of currency used in bartering for other goods. Ancient Greeks ground their chestnuts into flour and made chestnut bread whilst in other cultures, chestnut trees were grown specifically for their wood. So what’s the History of Roast Chestnuts Day? Roast Chestnut’s Day is a relatively new day in the calendar, but the practice of roasting chestnuts has been around for centuries. Although it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when they started to become so popular, historians pencil the 16th century as being a turning point, when the nuts would be sold by street vendors to anyone wanting a quick and warming snack. When chestnuts are carefully roasted, a natural sweetness is revealed. This makes them an ideal snack if you want something to stave off a sweet tooth that also happens to be quite nutritious. Chestnuts are comparatively low in calories, known as a good source of fibre as well as being very rich in vitamin C. Although technically they are nuts, they taste very unlike other nuts. The sweet, earthy taste is worth a try if you’ve never had one before and Roast Chestnuts Day is the perfect time to try that first one. Celebrate Roast Chestnuts Day by making your own. They’re easy to roast and we’ve got this great recipe for you to try. Just click on this page and you’ll be taken there. We can almost smell the roasting chestnuts already.... Let’s honour the Roast Chestnut! December 14th is Roast Chestnut Day! It’s when we officially mark the now quite ancient tradition of roasting chestnuts particularly during the festive season.
