5 Raring2go! THINGS TO DO Do you remember what you were doing on 31st July 2022? Nearly 90,000 people were at Wembley Stadium and millions more at home or in pubs watching the Lionesses become the champions of Europe. This summer sees the FIFA Women’s World Cup take place in Australia and New Zealand, with all eyes and expectation on Sarina Wiegman’s team to deliver more world class performances and to bring the trophy home. However, it won’t be easy, with teams like USA, Brazil, Spain, Germany and Australia on home turf hoping to get to the final. The anticipation is what brings the nerves, yet the Lionesses will go prepared, with fighting team spirit and hoping to do it not only for the fans, but for injured favourites, captain Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby. Is it coming home again? England’s success at the Euros has seen the popularity of women’s football skyrocket this season. With record crowds for teams at the Emirates, Old Trafford, to name but a few, people are flocking to see the Lionesses in action for their Women’s Super League (WSL) teams. The knock-on effect has also trickled down the pyramid with more people going to watch women’s football than seasons before. Aston Villa Women alone saw a 318% increase in season ticket sales with an average attendance of 4,399, the 6th highest in the WSL this season. Villa were the surprise team of the season, finishing 5th (last season 9th), behind Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and Man City with striker Rachel Daly winning the golden boot with 22 league goals. The atmosphere at women’s games is a unique one, it’s family oriented, friendly, inclusive and everything you would want when going to watch a sporting event you enjoy. Tickets are affordable, the quality of the football is what you would expect from elite professional athletes and it’s easy to make friends whilst there. Why not come and see what all the fuss is about? Buy your AVFC Women’s tickets at tickets.avfc.co.uk The Women’s World Cup kicks off on 20th July while the Women’s Super League will commence on the weekend of the 29/30th September for the 23/24 season. Check your local teams for their schedules. 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
