4 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! FAMILY Drama and dance classes provide a dynamic and supportive environment for children that helps to cultivate and boost their confidence in numerous ways. First and foremost, these classes encourage self-expression. Through improvisation, role-playing, and scripted scenes, children learn to articulate their thoughts and emotions effectively. Doing this not only enhances verbal communication skills but also allows them to explore and to understand their own feelings. And this in turn contributes to a stronger sense of self. More importantly, drama classes help nurture a positive and judgment-free atmosphere. In this creative space, children are encouraged to take risks without fear of failure or criticism. The emphasis is on the process rather than just the outcome. This promotes resilience and forms a willingness to embrace challenges. As children navigate different characters and scenarios, they begin to develop a sense of adaptability and problem-solving skills which are crucial attributes that translate into confidence across various aspects of their lives. Teamwork is another fundamental aspect of drama and dance classes. Collaborating with peers on group routines and performances helps children to learn the the importance of co-operation and mutual support. They learn to listen, that to compromise is fine and to value diverse perspectives. All of which contribute to a robust foundation for interpersonal skills. The ability to work effectively with others is a key component of confidence, as children realise the value of their contributions within a group dynamic. Furthermore, the experience of performing in front of an audience, whether it's classmates, instructors or parents helps children overcome stage fright and again build self-assurance. The applause and positive feedback they will receive become affirmations of their new found capabilities, reinforcing a positive self-image. This newfound confidence extends beyond the stage and will influence academic pursuits, social interactions and many future endeavors. In essence, drama and dance classes provide a holistic platform for children to discover, explore, and celebrate their unique identities. The skills and self-assurance gained through these experiences have a lasting impact that empower them to navigate the challenges of growing up with resilience and confidence. 7 Raring2go! In January 2019, Little Play World proudly became Herefordshire’s first mobile roleplay village. The mission? To bring the magic of roleplay to children in rural communities across the county and beyond, offering unique play opportunities like no other! Little Play World features nine carefully designed play areas where children can step into roles like chefs, vets, builders, hairdressers, rock stars, and more. I was looking for somewhere local to take my daughter Hannah (10) and nephew Jack (6) for a couple of hours on a wet autumn day in October. We spotted Aztec Island Adventure Golf in our Raring2go! magazine and chose to give it a go. Hannah and I often enjoy a round or two of crazy golf - but it's something we usually do on holiday. Come to think of it, we've always gone to outdoor crazy golf places and taken our chances with the weather (well, when in the UK anyway!). I was keen to give the indoor version a go, and to be honest, it felt a little like we were going on a holiday via the Stourbridge Ring Road! The 18-hole course is split into two sections, or 'terrains.' The first is themed around lush, overgrown Aztec jungles with hidden ruins. I did wonder if Jack would be too young to enjoy the delights of Aztec Island, but he did well on the first section, even if he was a little scared by the compelling Halloween décor! The second section is more suited to older children, I'd say. Hannah really enjoyed the challenge as it was a different surface, making the putting even faster. The coastal ruins of this terrain were a nice touch and made it visibly different from the first part of the course. When we finished our adventure, Hannah and Jack were given a small bag of Haribo sweets each - all part of the Halloween Spooktacular. They both left feeling very pleased! We came at the wrong time to have lunch here, but they do serve food and drinks. You can find the menu and more info on the Aztec Island website. Overall, we had a lovely afternoon at Aztec Island and wouldn't hesitate to go back. The staff were very helpful and the venue was well thought-out. Parking wasn't a problem as we pulled up right outside. We used a 20% discount code (RARING) - a Raring2Go exclusive - which was helpful as we used the spare cash to buy drinks. Crazy adventure golf is thirsty work!

21 Raring2go! FEATURE Nourishing Our Future: Why a balanced diet for Children matters Ensuring our children receive proper nutrition is essential for their growth, development, and overall well-being. As parents, we play a key role in shaping their dietary habits, which lays the foundation for a lifetime of health. A balanced diet provides vital nutrients, with fruits and vegetables offering essential vitamins and minerals, whole grains providing sustained energy, and proteins supporting growth and muscle development. Variety is crucial to achieving balance. Encourage children to explore a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, such as whole grain pasta, rice, and bread. Let them help select fresh produce and try new recipes to make mealtime fun. Protein should come from a mix of lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, and plant-based sources to provide the necessary amino acids for healthy development. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks is also important. Water should be the main beverage, and natural sweeteners like fruit can be used to satisfy sweet cravings without excess sugar. As parents, we need to lead by example. Children observe us closely, so by prioritizing a balanced diet ourselves, we teach them the importance of making healthy choices. By providing nourishing meals, we can help ensure our children grow into healthy, vibrant individuals with a bright future ahead. Just for One Night, Help with youth homelessness Wyre Forest & South Worcestershire Nightstop and Mediation Service is seeking volunteer hosts to provide safe emergency accommodation for young people facing homelessness. With youth homelessness on the rise, the charity needs more volunteers than ever to help offer a safe place to stay, even if just for one night, for vulnerable young people aged 16-25. The charity believes every young person deserves a secure place to sleep, especially those escaping difficult home situations like domestic abuse or neglect. Many of the young people they support have come from social services care and lack stable family support. Volunteers play a crucial role in offering a temporary, safe haven for these young individuals. A new short film, available on the charity's website, shares the experiences of current volunteers and those they have helped, providing potential hosts with insights into the rewarding nature of the role, as well as the training, support, and expenses provided. Family breakdown is the leading cause of youth homelessness, and with funding for local youth services being cut, Nightstop’s service is more vital than ever. If you're interested in helping change a young person's life, contact Wyre Forest & South Worcestershire Nightstop to learn more about becoming a volunteer host. Visit their website: www.wyreforestnightstop.org.uk/hosting, email info@wfnightstop.org or call 01562 743111 for further details. Cath & Peter – Nightstop Hosts

Beyond just providing a source of entertainment, puzzles engage young minds in a way that promotes cognitive, emotional and social growth. At a fundamental level, jigsaw puzzles are fantastic for honing cognitive skills. As children manipulate the pieces, they engage in spatial reasoning, recognising patterns and shapes to fit the puzzle together. This process stimulates critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, encouraging them to strategise and make connections between various elements. The gradual progression of difficulty in puzzles also supports the development of logical thought patterns as children work their way through more complex challenges. Fine motor skills, which are crucial for various daily activities receive a significant boost through puzzle-solving. The act of picking up, turning, and fitting pieces into place requires precision and co-ordination. For younger children who are still refining their hand-eye co-ordination and manual dexterity, jigsaw puzzles provide a fun and highly effective way to enhance these very important motor skills. The emotional benefits of jigsaw puzzles are equally significant. The satisfaction of finally completing a puzzle instills a deep sense of real accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. This positive reinforcement helps to build a child's confidence and encourages them to take on new challenges. It teaches them the value of persistence and the joy that comes from overcoming obstacles. Lessons that extend far beyond the realm of puzzles and into various aspects of life. Jigsaw puzzles can be a shared activity, promoting collaboration and communication. When children work on a puzzle together, they learn to share ideas, discuss strategies, and celebrate collective success. This collaborative aspect not only strengthens bonds with peers and family but also lays the foundation for effective teamwork in future endeavors. Jigsaw puzzles contribute to the development of patience and perseverance. Solving a puzzle requires time and effort, teaching children the importance of persistence and the satisfaction that comes from completing a task. These qualities are essential for navigating challenges in academics and personal growth. The appeal of jigsaw puzzles for children goes beyond mere amusement. They serve as a dynamic tool for enhancing cognitive abilities, fine-tuning motor skills, fostering emotional resilience, and promoting social interaction. As a versatile and engaging activity, jigsaws offer a well-rounded developmental experience for children, making them an excellent addition to any educational or recreational toolkit. Children may encounter various hurdles on their journey to literacy and it's crucial for parents and caregivers to adapt strategies that foster a positive reading experience. Firstly, identifying and addressing specific reading difficulties is essential. Whether a child struggles with decoding certain words, comprehension, or maintaining their focus, pinpointing the challenges allows for a targeted intervention. Tailoring the reading activities to the child's level of proficiency ensures that the material is appropriately challenging without causing frustration. Creating a supportive and encouraging environment is key to overcoming reading challenges. Positive reinforcement, praise for effort and celebrating small victories contribute to building a child's confidence and motivation. Patience is crucial; allowing children the time they need to progress at their own pace creates a deep sense of accomplishment and a more positive attitude towards reading. Incorporating a variety of reading can also be beneficial. Offering a mix of fiction and non-fiction books, graphic novels or audio books can provide diverse options that cater to different interests and learning styles. Interactive reading, asking open-ended questions, discussing the story, or relating it to the child's experiences, engages them in a way that enhances comprehension and critical thinking. Utilising technology can be a valuable tool in overcoming reading challenges. Educational apps and online resources designed to support literacy development offer a great interactive and engaging experience. These resources can act to supplement traditional reading methods and provide additional practice in a format that may appeal to more tech-savvy children. Above all, encouraging a love for reading is paramount. Making reading enjoyable through storytelling, creating a cozy reading nook, or incorporating themed activities can turn reading into a pleasurable experience rather than a daunting task. By tailoring strategies to individual needs and placing emphasis on the joy of reading we can guide children towards overcoming their challenges and build a foundation for a lifelong love of literature and reading.
