Raring2go! PLACES TO GO 4 raring2go.co.uk Love the Earth 10 ways to love the Earth 1. Love Nature Having an appreciation of nature from an early age will help children see that our world is beautiful and worth their time and efforts. Local parks, woodlands and nature reserves are a great place to start. Ask youngsters to spot things from nature or print out a bug hunt, scavenger trail or animal detective sheet from our website www.raring2go.co.uk/kidszone Make art from what you find on your walk. Look out for children’s holiday workshops that encourage a love of nature such as pond dipping or forest schools. 2. Love Animals A great way to develop a love for animals is to see them with your own eyes. By visiting your local zoo, safari park or animal conservation centre you are helping to conserve endangered species here and abroad. Find out how their work supports animals from their websites. 3. Love Walking Getting out on foot is by far the best way to travel for the environment and is good for our health too. Get children to love walking by making it fun. Get a pedometer or download a free app to your phone so they can see how many steps they’ve taken. Try the Love Exploring free app www.loveexploring.co.uk which includes games and guided tours. 4. Love Recycling Get your children to help with sorting the recycling when they are old enough. It might seem a massive task to reduce the amount of plastics we use, but break it down so that children can see the small things they can do can make a difference. Take a reusable water bottle to school, don’t wrap sandwiches in cling film, if their school doesn’t recycle ask them to bring their lunch litter home so it can be recycled with household waste, use rechargeable batteries for their electronic toys and games instead of single-use batteries. Climate change is the topic of the moment but how can we help our children develop a love for the Earth without scaring them?
25 Raring2go! PLACES TO GO 5 7. Love Cycling Bikes are a sustainable transport option so get youngsters on a bike as soon as possible. Bikeability courses teach your child how to ride a bike safely and are run at locations across the country. Read our tips on how to ride a bike at www. raring2go.co.uk 5. Love Food Visit local working farms to see how our food is grown, meet the animals, buy local produce from the farm shop or pickyour-own fruit, veg and pumpkins or pay a visit to your local refill shop. Visit the Love Food, Hate Waste website for lots of tips including recipes to use up left-overs, storage tips and a useful portion planner for 1-2, 4-10 and 11-18-year-olds. www.lovefoodhatewaste.com 6. Love Pre-Loved Encourage children to be proud to wear ‘hand-me-downs’ from brothers and sisters, cousins and friends as ‘pre-loved’ items cut down on waste and your carbon foot print. Re-useable nappies work out cheaper the more babies that wear them! There’s loads of resale apps but why not consider giving your good quality used clothes to a local charity shop, so you are helping a local cause as well as the environment. Uniforms can be problematic as they are not accepted by all charity shops. Why not set up a uniform swap at your school or you can sign your school up to Uniformerly www.uniformerly.co.uk 9. Love Gifts We all like a present to open but often they involve buying lots of plastic. If you are invited to a Naming or Christening ceremony consider buying a tree that could be planted in the child’s garden. They can then see how tall the tree has grown as they grow and if you buy a fruit tree, they can even eat fruit from it. The best time to plant a tree is in the colder months, get advice from your local garden centre. 10. Love Water Remember to turn off taps when brushing your teeth and that showers are more economical than baths. Litter can find its way into rivers, streams and canals and can make its way to the sea. To keep it from blowing into waterways join an organised litter pick or organise one yourself. www.keepbritaintidy.org 8. Love Local You don’t have to travel abroad to have fun, you can reduce your carbon footprint by getting together closer to home. We are so lucky in this area to have so many exciting places such as the ones in this magazine. Why not visit a different park, playground, or woodland each weekend?
26 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! PLACES TO GO Bring the whole family together this Easter and treat your loved ones to a fun spring adventure with the National Trust. From getting active in the great outdoors, to spotting signs of spring, and experiencing nature bursting into life at the places the National Trust cares for, there are over 190 Easter trails to choose from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland this year. There will literally be an Easter egg trail a stone's throw from where you are. Every single National Trust Easter trail will be different and will celebrates nature, history and beauty. Follow winding garden paths, crash along muddy woodland trails or time travel with adventures to castles, towers, and mansions. An Easter egg trail at any National Trust property is an opportunity for children to let their imaginations run wild. Watch in wonder as their faces light up as they discover so many amazing things in the most natural of settings. Each National Trust Easter trail ends with a chocolate egg, or vegan and free from egg, made here in the UK using cocoa that is responsibly sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. National Trust Easter egg trails cost £3 per child, plus the standard National Trust admission/free entry for National Trust members. Have a magical Easter of fun this Spring with National Trust. 29 Raring2go! ACTIVITIES Neighbours and communities across the United Kingdom are invited to share food and fun together at Coronation Big Lunches on Sunday 7th May in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship. From a cup of tea with a neighbour to a street party, a Coronation Big Lunch brings the celebrations to your local area and is a great way to get to know your community a little better. Thousands of events will take place in every corner of the UK this May as people take to their streets, gardens, parks and community spaces to join the Coronation celebrations and mark this historic occasion. There are Free downloadable resources available online by the Big Lunch team to help people and local communities start their Coronation Big Lunch planning. To give you a helping hand, here’s a few tips: Pick a time: You don’t have to have your Big Lunch at Lunchtme! If for various reasons, it’s proving trickey to get everyone together for a daytime lunch, how about a Lunar Lunch? If anyone is fasting during Ramadan, or working irregular shift patterns, the Lunar Lunch will bring people together after dark and you can feast your way into the night! Invite the neighbours: Got a local WhatsApp or Facebook group? Invite the neighbours and spread the word. Publicise your event locally and if you're not a member of Nextdoor yet, take a minute to sign up so you can connect with locals that way too. And of course, try to invite people personally, as you'll no doubt find people who want to help with the organising too! Hang the bunting: Make bunting using scraps of old material, plastic bags or the contents of your recycling box. You could ask others to make bits and link them all together. On the day, give the kids some chalk to decorate the pavement. Take a look at a few of our simple ideas for decorations. You could have a prize for the 'best dressed' home! Tickle the Tastebud: You could ask everyone to bring something to share, odd numbers bring savory, evens sweet, or keep it simple and safe and just ask people to bring their own lunch. If you have the time, take a look at some simple recipes shared online by Big Lunchers. Enjoy the day! Try to make sure that your entertainment, games and activities are suitable and safe for all. Set a time for lunch so that everyone comes out at the right moment. Organise some music or ask everyone to tune into the same radio station or open their windows, or see what local talent there is to organise a little live performance or sing along! attling the elements on Big Lunch day. Take plenty photos and selfies and most importantly, have fun! Fundraise at your Big Lunch Lots of people use their Big Lunch to raise awareness or funds for a cause close to their heart, be it for their own community group or a local asset such as a children's play area, or for a national charity. In 2022 a whopping £22 million pounds was raised at Big Lunch and Big Jubilee Lunch events across the UK, and the majority of that was for local charities and causes. After the party Once the bunting is down, don’t forget to share your story, using hastags like: #TheBigLunch and #TheCoronationBigLunch on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Oh, and this is the grown up bit... make sure you tidy up and take your rubbish home with you! The Coronation Big Lunch Join the nation in celebration and be part of history on Sunday May 7th!
