Raring2go! WHAT’S ON & WHERE TO GO 2 raring2go.co.uk EASTER is my favourite time of year; the days are longer, the bulbs are popping up and there are baby animals - and chocolate - everywhere! Unlike the last two years, this Easter there are lots of lovely activities taking place for families - too many to mention here! You’ll find plenty more events on our onine What’s On calendar. Just pop in your postcode and search away. I always enjoy hearing from my readers, especially the children. So if you or your child wants to recommend a place to visit, or review a book, do get in touch. Thank you to all the children that sent in their portraits of The Queen. I was so impressed by the high standard and I am sure they would put a smile on Her Majesty’s face too! Take a look at them on page 17. Hold on to this magazine as you’ll need it for May Half Term and the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend too! Have fun and please mention Raring2go! wherever you go. 8 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! ARTS & CRAFTS Easter Craft Handmade Decorated Easter Eggs Craft Idea from The World Outside Outdoor Kindergarten What you need: - Eggs - A pin or safety pin - A cocktail stick - Two large bowls - Washing up liquid -Paint, glitter, glue or stickers What to do: 1. Carefully pierce the egg by pushing a pin or safety pin in at either end. 2. Try to make the hole at the base (widest end) of the egg, large enough to fit a cocktail stick through. Push the cocktail stick into the egg to break the yolk, twist it around a few times then remove it. 3. Hold the egg over a clean bowl with the larger hole pointing downwards and blow or carefully use a straw to blow out the yolk. The air will push the egg yolk and white out of the shell into the bowl below. (You can save this for cooking or baking!) 4.Once the egg feels empty, pop it into the second bowl and fill with warm water and washing up liquid and swish it around a bit. 5.Leave to drain on kitchen towel. Once it’s completely dry, you’re ready to decorate! The World Outside Kindergarten is an outdoor woodland childcare setting – the first of its kind in the Wyre Forest, catering for pre-school children. To find out more visit www.theworldoutsidekindergarten.com Decoration: You can use paints, glitter or stickers to decorate your egg. Glitter - for a simple, yet effective finish, dip the base of the egg in glue and then in glitter, and leave upside down in an eggcup to dry. Paint with lovely spring flowers or chicks, or even letters and names. Stickers also provide lovely decoration! Then you can display your eggs on a table, fill a fruit bowl with coloured tissue paper to create a ‘nest’, or if you have enough egg cups to spare, create a display for a table or windowsill. Happy Easter!

13 Raring2go! PLACES2GO Raring2go! Review: Reuben, aged 5: “I loved the secret cave - it was awesome! I also really liked playing in the boat in the playground and being chased around the maze.” Rose, aged 7: “I really liked the chickens - they came right up to me - and finding the lion and fairies’ homes on the trail. The cake at the end was delicious too!” Here at Whitlenge we are passionate about ensuring “the next generation of gardeners” - our children - are as keen to get outdoors as we are! To encourage this we dress the gardens to coincide with school holidays and design child friendly garden trails for them to follow whilst the grown-ups enjoy the tranquility. From 9 - 24 April, children will be able to enjoy an Easter Bunny trail around our landscaped gardens. This will run daily throughout the Easter school holidays. Throughout the summer season, including May Half Term and the Jubilee Bank Holiday, families can follow the beautiful trail, bedecked with blooms, seeking out fairies and spotting scultures. If you fancy making your own fairy garden, our gift shop has everything you need! The onsite tearoom serves a variety of delicious cakes and refreshments too.

26 raring2go.co.uk With the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations coming up in June, we asked the staff at Stourbridge Library to suggest some books with a Royal theme for children to read. If you’d like to read one of these books with your child, your local library will be happy to lend them to you. Dudley: www.better.org.uk/library/dudley Worcestershire: www.worcestershire.gov.uk/libraries Little Elizabeth by Valerie Wilding and illustrations by Pauline Reeves This book shows children what the Queen was like as a child and a young adult before she became Queen. The time line starts with the Baby Princess going up to her Coronation. It is a great book that conveys historical facts to children in a light-hearted way. It has colourful and fun illustrations. This book is ideal for children aged 7 years plus. There is also a glossary at the back of the book to help explain words like British Commonwealth and Coronation. The Queen’s Handbag by Steve Anthony The Queen’s Handbag is a great way for children to see the landmarks of the United Kingdom while following the Queen who gives chase after the sneaky swan snatches her handbag. You get to enjoy the whirlwind trip by different forms of transport. This book has lovely illustrations on big pages and is aimed at 3-5 year olds. Don’t forget to look out for the Butler! This is a funny sequel to Steve Antony’s bestselling book, The Queen’s Hat. Where’s Mrs Queen? by Ingela P Arrhenius This is a lovely hide-andseek book that Nosy Crow Ltd have produced which is part of the award-winning series Felt Flap series. The author Ingela P Arrhenius is passionate about retro style and it is reflected in this book. It is a sturdy board book perfect to share with babies and toddlers. It has the felt flaps and a surprise mirror. Tea with the Queen by Pippa Jones and Ella Okstad Why don’t you read along and join in with Squishy McFluff’s adventure… This is the story of Ava and Squishy McFluff, who is Ava’s invisible cat. They enjoy an adventure by going to London and they end up having tea with the queen. They even get their very own crowns! This is a joy to read with beautiful illustrations and rhyming to read out aloud. A great book to sit down with young children and read along with them. 30 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! OPPORTUNITY Could you be the next Editor of Raring2go! Kidderminster & Stourbridge? Have you ever dreamed of running your own business, making your own decisions and taking control of your working life to fit around your family? After 14 amazing years, I am now looking for a new owner to take over the Kidderminster & Stourbridge edition of Raring2go! magazine; a thriving and well respected local business. During my years as Editor, I’ve enjoyed discovering new places to visit with my family, reviewing shows at the theatre, and trying out new activities with my two children. By working for myself, I have been lucky enough to be there for the daily school run, attend sports days and nativities, and take time off around the school holidays. As my children are now older (my eldest had just started Reception when I published my first issue and now he’s at university!) I feel it’s time to hang my hat up and start a new chapter. I would love for another local, passionate parent to enjoy the same experiences I have. However, it is important for me to find the right person to take care of my third ‘baby’, so I will continue to publish Raring2go! until I find that special person. While Raring2go! is a business where you work for yourself, you are part of a supportive franchise network, where there’s always someone on hand to give advice if you need it. No previous experience is necessary although an interest in the local community, an eye for detail and a tenacious attitude will certainly help. If you’re ready for a change in direction and have always dreamed of working for yourself, do get in touch with me for a chat: Call Sally on 01384 377536. kidderminster@raring2go.co.uk
