Raring2go! Nourishing Our Future: Why a balanced diet for Children matters Ensuring our children receive proper nutrition is essential for their growth, development, and overall well-being. As parents, we play a key role in shaping their dietary habits, which lays the foundation for a lifetime of health. A balanced diet provides vital nutrients, with fruits and vegetables offering essential vitamins and minerals, whole grains providing sustained energy, and proteins supporting growth and muscle development. Variety is crucial to achieving balance. Encourage children to explore a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, such as whole grain pasta, rice, and bread. Let them help select fresh produce and try new recipes to make mealtime fun. Protein should come from a mix of lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, and plant-based sources to provide the necessary amino acids for healthy development. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks is also important. Water should be the main beverage, and natural sweeteners like fruit can be used to satisfy sweet cravings without excess sugar. As parents, we need to lead by example. Children observe us closely, so by prioritising a balanced diet ourselves, we teach them the importance of making healthy choices. By providing nourishing meals, we can help ensure our children grow into healthy, vibrant individuals with a bright future ahead. 7

LOCALSERVICES Just for One Night, Help with youth homelessness Wyre Forest & South Worcestershire Nightstop and Mediation Service is seeking volunteer hosts to provide safe emergency accommodation for young people facing homelessness. With youth homelessness on the rise, the charity needs more volunteers than ever to help offer a safe place to stay, even if just for one night, for vulnerable young people aged 16-25. The charity believes every young person deserves a secure place to sleep, especially those escaping difficult home situations like domestic abuse or neglect. Many of the young people they support have come from social services care and lack stable family support. Volunteers play a crucial role in offering a temporary, safe haven for these young individuals. A new short film, available on the charity's website, shares the experiences of current volunteers and those they have helped, providing potential hosts with insights into the rewarding nature of the role, as well as the training, support, and expenses provided. Family breakdown is the leading cause of youth homelessness, and with funding for local youth services being cut, Nightstop’s service is more vital than ever. If you're interested in helping change a young person's life, contact Wyre Forest & South Worcestershire Nightstop to learn more about becoming a volunteer host. Visit their website: www.wyreforestnightstop.org.uk/hosting, email info@wfnightstop.org or call 01562 743111 for further details. CLUBS& CLAS ES Why send your kids to FOOTBALL Football is a fantastic sport for children, offering a wealth of physical, social, and emotional benefits. On the physical side, football helps kids build strength, endurance, and flexibility. Running, kicking, and changing direction quickly are essential skills that promote cardiovascular health and improve overall fitness. The sport's dynamic nature also enhances coordination and motor skills as children learn to control the ball and engage in complex movements. Equally important is the social aspect of football. It teaches children the value of teamwork, cooperation, and communication. Football is a team sport where every player has a role, and success depends on how well the group works together. These experiences foster important social skills, such as listening, negotiating, and handling group dynamics. It also offers a sense of belonging, as children become part of a supportive community. Mentally, football sharpens focus and decisionmaking. It challenges children to think quickly, analyze situations, and adapt to ever-changing game conditions. Football also helps build resilience, as players learn to cope with both victories and defeats, developing emotional maturity along the way. In short, football is more than just a game; it’s an enriching experience that nurtures children’s physical, social, and mental growth while promoting fun, teamwork, and healthy competition. Why send your kids... SWIMMING Swimming is one of the best activities for children, offering a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. First and foremost, swimming is an excellent full-body workout that enhances cardiovascular health, builds muscle strength, and improves flexibility. The resistance of water makes it a low-impact exercise, reducing the risk of injury while promoting healthy growth and development. It also aids in coordination and motor skills, as children learn to balance, kick, and stroke in rhythm. Beyond the physical benefits, swimming plays a crucial role in boosting children's mental health. It provides a sense of accomplishment and builds self-confidence as they master new techniques and increase their abilities. Swimming can also help children improve focus and discipline, as it requires concentration and determination to succeed. Additionally, swimming is a fun and social activity, encouraging children to engage with peers and form friendships. Group swim lessons or poolside play foster teamwork and social interaction, providing opportunities for children to develop communication skills and emotional intelligence. Importantly, swimming also teaches vital water safety skills, which can be life-saving and help reduce drowning risks. Incorporating swimming into a child's routine is an investment in their health, happiness, and safety, setting the foundation for a lifetime of benefits. 13

PLACESTO GO Funded by: birminghammuseums.org.uk/whats-on at Thinktank Family days out ! • • 4k Planetarium • Outdoor Science Garden Don’t miss – Fun, interactive Family Shows Roving Reporter, Our Trip to Aztec Island... I was looking for somewhere local to take my daughter Hannah (10) and nephew Jack (6) for a couple of hours on a wet autumn day in October. We spotted Aztec Island Adventure Golf in our Raring2go! magazine and chose to give it a go. Hannah and I often enjoy a round or two of crazy golf - but it's something we usually do on holiday. Come to think of it, we've always gone to outdoor crazy golf places and taken our chances with the weather (well, when in the UK anyway!). I was keen to give the indoor version a go, and to be honest, it felt a little like we were going on a holiday via the Stourbridge Ring Road! The 18-hole course is split into two sections, or 'terrains.' The first is themed around lush, overgrown Aztec jungles with hidden ruins. I did wonder if Jack would be too young to enjoy the delights of Aztec Island, but he did well on the first section, even if he was a little scared by the compelling Halloween décor! The second section is more suited to older children, I'd say. Hannah really enjoyed the challenge as it was a different surface, making the putting even faster. The coastal ruins of this terrain were a nice touch and made it visibly different from the first part of the course. When we finished our adventure, Hannah and Jack were given a small bag of Haribo sweets each - all part of the Halloween Spooktacular. They both left feeling very pleased! We came at the wrong time to have lunch here, but they do serve food and drinks. You can find the menu and more info on the Aztec Island website. Overall, we had a lovely afternoon at Aztec Island and wouldn't hesitate to go back. The staff were very helpful and the venue was well thought-out. Parking wasn't a problem as we pulled up right outside. We used a 20% discount code (RARING) - a Raring2Go exclusive - which was helpful as we used the spare cash to buy drinks. Crazy adventure golf is thirsty work! 25
