Well, I was wrong. Eight years on, those 3 hours every Saturday morning seem like the best investment I ever made in my daughter’s future. She was never the best actor, or singer, or dancer, but Jigsaw helped her achieve all that she could - and not just in the performing arts. Apart from having a huge amount of good, old-fashioned fun, Polly gained tremendous confidence, developed great social skills and learnt how to work in a team. Her teachers were always encouraging, sympathetic and completely professional and in their classes she flourished. Jigsaw Arts has over 25 schools in London and the south-east, catering for students aged 3-18. If you would like your child to learn performance techniques while improving their confidence and social skills, then why not sign them up? Why Jigsaw? A Parent’s Tale The competition for our children’s free time is ferocious. Tennis, ballet, French club - even Cordon Bleu cookery classes - they can do it all. And believe me, my kids did. They tried everything, at least once. As they discarded one activity after another, my bank balance shrank, the pile of unused trombones, football boots and hard hats grew, and I began to consider cartoons and computer games perfectly suitable (and cheap) entertainment. So when my eldest daughter asked to join a Jigsaw Performing Arts class held in a local school, I was reluctant to say the least. Three hours every Saturday seemed like a huge commitment for both of us, and Polly - a shy, timid 10 year old - had never shown any great desire to tread the boards. What on earth could she possibly get out of it? www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk

18 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! Clubs / Classes & Holiday Camps Five Top Tips For Fitter Kids! 1. MODEL IT. If your child sees you undertaking sport and physical exercise, they are more likely to take your values on board. It’s not what you say, but what you do that has an impact. If you exercise when they are at school or asleep, talk about it at dinner or breakfast and let your exercise equipment be visible. Going out for a run or bike ride? Announce it! Let them know what you’re doing and how much you enjoy it. 2. EVEN BETTER, GET ACTIVE TOGETHER! Children are naturally competitive and thrive on rewards, so take advantage! Try a family fun run, or get even the most reluctant runner charging around with a Colour Run, Santa Run or Glow Run. There are usually medals at the end too for them to proudly display at home. 3. MIX IT UP. Try as many sports as possible to develop your child’s motor skills. Children are natural cross-trainers, so the more a child is exposed to different physical activities, the more control and awareness they will have of their bodies. This helps their confidence and belief in themselves and also helps them see what sports they really enjoy. 4. PRAISE THE EFFORT RATHER THAN THE OUTCOME. Children who aren’t naturally athletic need to hear how pleased you are when they’ve achieved even a small goal. Perhaps they’ve walked further than before or maybe they’ve chosen to do something active over sitting at a screen. Whatever it is, praise the effort and the achievement they’ve met. 5. HAND OVER CONTROL. Let your children take turns at choosing an active pursuit or after school / half term holiday camp. Even if it’s a trip to the park or a walk with the dog, it all counts as exercise and if your child feels a sense of control, they are more likely to want to do it again. 5

British Science Week 5th - 14th March Incredible books for all Children Raring2Read! BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FAMILIES Does your family enjoy reading? Then why not join our Facebook group, to share ideas, tips and recommendations. To read a review of all the books in this series go to: https://raring2go.co.uk/2022/02/raring2go-reviews-shine-books/ Shine Books is a publisher that dedicates its work ‘for anyone who ever felt like they didn't fit in’. Initially created for 3-8 year olds, there is no set age limit! We reviewed six Shine books to see for ourselves just how fabulous they are - and we weren't disappointed! The books introduce us to six loveable and fun characters, beautifully illustrated by Robert Hooper, all living with different conditions which present them with challenges at school. While the books are of course highly beneficial for children living with those challenges, they are also a really great way of introducing all children to the themes of diversity, nurturing an ethos of understanding and empathy from a young age. Most children without SEN will be in classes with childr n who do have SEN - these books pave the way for inclusion and friendships which previously may not have been easily made. The books introduce us to Alice, an Aardvark with Autism; Charlie, a Chimpanzee with ADHD; Dylan, a Dog with Dyslexia; Emma, an Elephant with Epilepsy; Ollie, an Otter with OCD; and Priya, a Panda with Dyspraxia. Here’s a closer look at one of the of 6 incredible books... Alice (An Aardvark With Autism) is incredibly good when it comes to numbers, but she doesn't like loud noise, and is anxious about being in noisy situations. She wants to be with her friends, but a birthday party proves too challenging. Alice finds it difficult to explain how she is feeling, but Alice's mum and Alice's school friends come up with a solution, enabling Alice to enjoy a birthday party with her friend Dylan after all.We love this book as it high lights Alice's strengths, and demonstrates how a little understanding and planning can enable a child to be included in social events. As parents, we should never underestimate the power and influence classmates have on our children's wellbeing, and the power the actions of our own children have on their friends. 'Always be kind' is indeed a great lesson for our youngsters; sharing these books with your child is a great way to develop that ethos. At Raring2go! we love what Shine Books is doing. Every child is different and that some find school life difficult. Children with special educational needs (SEN) face additional challenges. While most children hit milestones and achieve well in literacy skills, children with SEN may be left wondering why it is so difficult for them. Time for SHINE Books Raring2go!
