8 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! Toffee Apples Raring2make! FUN IDEAS FOR MAKING THINGS TOGETHER ‘Cakes are healthy too, you just eat a small slice’ Mary Berry www.raring2go.co.uk Toffee Apples with Baking Mad About the bake Please also visit the Raring2go! website for more great recipe ideas: www.raring2go.co.uk To test this drop a small amount in a glass of cold water. If it is ready a blob of toffee will form which is slightly stretchy but breaks with pressure. If using a thermometer, a hard crack should be between 146C - 155C. Step 4: Dip each apple into the toffee turning it to completely cover the apple. Step 5: Leave the apples on the prepared tray. Wrap in cellophane for gifting. With thanks to Baking Mad for this Toffee Apple recipe. More online at: bakingmad.com Toffee Apples are fun to make and share. Why not get creative and decorate with chocolate sprinkles or decorations to personalise your toffee apples? What are toffee apples made of? Toffee apples are the perfect treat for Bonfire Night or Halloween. Juicy apples are dipped into the sugar syrup and allowed to set. It you want to, this is when you can add your chocolate sprinkles or decorations. Ingredients: • 7 Apple(s) • 265g Billington's Unrefined Golden Caster Sugar • 130ml Water • 0.5 tsp White wine vinegar • 2 tbsp Golden syrup • 30g Butter (unsalted) Method Step 1: Prepare the apples by cutting out a small hole in the top and attaching a stick. Lightly grease a baking sheet for placing the coated apples on. Step 2: Dissolve the sugar in the water over a moderate heat. When it has dissolved, stir in the vinegar, syrup and butter. Step 3: Bring to the boil and cook until it reaches a hard crack stage. This should take about 10 minutes.

9 Raring2go! PLACES TO GO

10 raring2go.co.uk27 Helping children who are nervous on fireworks night Every child is unique, some like fireworks more than others and some don’t want to watch them at all which is fine. If your child is nervous around loud noises or is autistic, these are our suggested tips which may help. Explain what’s going to happen. Social or visual stories can be a great help. Let them know when they’re going, where they’re going and the different steps once you’re there. If you can include images, it will help. You can find videos of firework displays on YouTube if they have never watched a display before. Not sure where to start? Google ‘fireworks social stories’ for some ideas or Monkey World have an excellent example of a social story on their website. It’s not fireworks related but it is a great example! Go to www.monkeyworld.org, click on ‘Visit Us’ followed by ‘Disabled Facilities’ and then ‘Accessibility Guide’ to find it. Have plenty of distractions. Hungry children can become distressed children very quickly. Having snacks and drinks on hand can help, maybe even a hot chocolate on a cold night can keep children from worrying and keep their tummies happy too. Use ear defenders or ear plugs. Ear defenders obviously help with the noise, I also find that they help other people realise your child may have extra needs and give them a bit of space! If your child isn’t a fan of ear defenders (especially as they get towards the teen years) we find Loop ear plugs discreet and effective. Contact the venue If your child has a disability or condition, the venue may have a specific viewing area which might give them some extra space and help deal with the crowds. Comfy shoes! Footwear isn’t just essential for keeping little feet warm, my daughter finds the vibrations from the fireworks as off putting as the sound. Having shoes with squishy soles doesn’t elimate the issue but it can reduce it. Consider something low key at home If the noise of fireworks is a big no, maybe toasting marshmallows over a fire basket would be better, or a few sparklers, or one of our favourites is a Mystical Flame sachet that makes the flames burn different colours. (link to Mystical Flames on the QR code). THE FIREWORK CODE ALWAYS FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE ✷ Do not buy fireworks from UNLICENCED retailers. These fireworks may be unsafe and illegal. ✷ Only buy fireworks that comply with current safety standards.* ✷ Always keep fireworks in a closed box. Take them out one at a time and close the box. ✷ Never put fireworks in your pocket. ✷ Be considerate. Let your neighbours know you will be having a display, especially if they are elderly or they have pets or children. ✷ Avoid setting fireworks off late at night, particularly if it is a school-night. ✷ Ensure your pets are safe. ✷ Carefully follow the instructions on EACH firework. ✷ Never go back to a lit firework unless the instructions advise otherwise. ✷ Never throw fireworks; it is dangerous. ✷ Light fireworks one at a time, at the end of the fuse, and at arm’s length. ✷ Light sparklers one at a time and wear suitable gloves, even when lighting them. ✷ Never give sparklers to a child under the age of 5. ✷ Never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire. Well, I was wrong. Eight years on, those 3 hours every Saturday morning seem like the best investment I ever made in my daughter’s future. She was never the best actor, or singer, or dancer, but Jigsaw helped her achieve all that she could - and not just in the performing arts. Apart from having a huge amount of good, old-fashioned fun, Polly gained tremendous confidence, developed great social skills and learnt how to work in a team. Her teachers were always encouraging, sympathetic and completely professional and in their classes she flourished. Jigsaw Arts has over 25 schools in London and the south-east, catering for students aged 3-18. If you would like your child to learn performance techniques while improving their confidence and social skills, then why not sign them up? Why Jigsaw? A Parent’s Tale The competition for our children’s free time is ferocious. Tennis, ballet, French club - even Cordon Bleu cookery classes - they can do it all. And believe me, my kids did. They tried everything, at least once. As they discarded one activity after another, my bank balance shrank, the pile of unused trombones, football boots and hard hats grew, and I began to consider cartoons and computer games perfectly suitable (and cheap) entertainment. So when my eldest daughter asked to join a Jigsaw Performing Arts class held in a local school, I was reluctant to say the least. Three hours every Saturday seemed like a huge commitment for both of us, and Polly - a shy, timid 10 year old - had never shown any great desire to tread the boards. What on earth could she possibly get out of it? www.jigsaw-arts.co.uk

MODEL IT. If your child sees you undertaking sport and physical exercise, they are more likely to take your values on board. It’s not what you say, but what you do that has an impact. If you exercise when they are at school or asleep, talk about it at dinner or breakfast and let your exercise equipment be visible. Going out for a run or bike ride? Announce it! Let them know what you’re doing and how much you enjoy it. 2. EVEN BETTER, GET ACTIVE TOGETHER! Children are naturally competitive and thrive on rewards, so take advantage! Try a family fun run, or get even the most reluctant runner charging around with a Colour Run, Santa Run or Glow Run. There are usually medals at the end too for them to proudly display at home. 3. MIX IT UP. Try as many sports as possible to develop your child’s motor skills. Children are natural cross-trainers, so the more a child is exposed to different physical activities, the more control and awareness they will have of their bodies. This helps their confidence and belief in themselves and also helps them see what sports they really enjoy. 4. PRAISE THE EFFORT RATHER THAN THE OUTCOME. Children who aren’t naturally athletic need to hear how pleased you are when they’ve achieved even a small goal. Perhaps they’ve walked further than before or maybe they’ve chosen to do something active over sitting at a screen. Whatever it is, praise the effort and the achievement they’ve met. 5. HAND OVER CONTROL. Let your children take turns at choosing an active pursuit or after school / half term holiday camp. Even if it’s a trip to the park or a walk with the dog, it all counts as exercise and if your child feels a sense of control, they are more likely to want to do it again. 5

Raring2go! Raring2go! Book Review 23 British Science Week 5th - 14th March Away With Words By Sophie Cameron Reviewed by Willow Brown, Aged 10 - West Midlands Raring2Read! BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FAMILIES Does your family enjoy reading? Then join our Facebook group, to share ideas, tips and recommendations. www.facebook.com/groups/raring2read This book was great. It showed me what it would be like to go to school in a country when I cannot speak the language and how difficult it must be for non-English speakers. I couldn’t put this book down! It tells the story of two girls - one who is a non-English speaker from Catalan who moves to Scotland and the other - a girl who has selective mutism. My favourite thing about this book is the way it is written - it is structured really well, representing what it feels like to not understand the language with squiggly lines ~~~~~ as if it is just all mumbled jumbled up words coming out because she is not English. I sympathised with the character and it made me think about children in my school. Raring2go! would like to thank LoveReading4Kids, for this wonderful review. European Day of Languages 2023 25 European Day of Languages The European Day of Languages is an annual celebration held on September 26th to promote linguistic diversity and cultural understanding across Europe. In 2023, this vibrant event promises to be a grand celebration of languages, bringing together people from various backgrounds to honour the rich tapestry of European linguistic heritage. On this special day, language enthusiasts, educators, and language learners will organize a wide range of activities and events throughout Europe. Language fairs, workshops, competitions, and language exchange programmes will be organised to encourage the learning and appreciation of different languages. Cultural performances, storytelling sessions, and language-themed exhibitions will showcase the diversity and beauty of European languages. In classrooms, students will engage in interactive language lessons, exploring not only the major European languages like English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian but also lesser-known regional and minority languages. Language learning apps, online platforms, and digital resources will be extensively utilised to make language learning accessible to all. European institutions, governments, and educational institutions will actively participate in promoting multilingualism and fostering language learning initiatives. Public campaigns will be launched to emphasise the importance of language skills for personal growth, intercultural communication, and professional opportunities. The European Day of Languages 2023 will serve as a platform to celebrate Europe's linguistic diversity, encourage language learning, and promote cross-cultural understanding among individuals of different nationalities. By embracing the beauty of languages, Europe aims to strengthen its unity and celebrate the unique linguistic tapestry that contributes to its cultural richness. Would you like your child to learn another language? A language school or tutor maybe closer than you think.

26 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! Cycle Safely at Night In a world that's constantly on the move, cycling remains a timeless activity that brings families closer together while promoting a healthy lifestyle. At bikebook, we're not just passionate about bikes – we're dedicated to ensuring every family's cycling journey is as safe as it is enjoyable. Our mission is simple: to connect families with local bicycle mechanics who ensure that their children's bikes are not only ready to ride but also are safe. In this article, we'll explore how bikebook ensures your families’ bikes are safe to ride, and we'll delve into the importance of well-maintained bikes and safety measures for night time riding. There's nothing quite like the joy of watching our children pedal down the street with their friend. But as parents, ensuring their safety is paramount. That's where bikebook steps in – our platform simplifies the process of finding a reliable local bicycle mechanic. These skilled professionals specialise in tuning up bikes, inspecting safety features, and ensuring that every nut and bolt is secure. By connecting families with these expert mechanics, bikebook is empowering parents to give their children the gift of safe and worry-free cycling adventures. As we head into autumn and the days get shorter, the dangers of night time riding increases. Riding in the dark poses unique challenges and requires additional safety precautions. Reduced visibility makes it crucial for cyclists to be visible to others on the road. Therefore, it is imperative that your children’s bike has the proper lighting for the conditions. Just as stars light up the night sky, bike lights and reflectors illuminate the road, ensuring that cyclists are seen by drivers and pedestrians alike. Bike lights and reflectors are a cyclist's best friends when the sun dips below the horizon. Reflectors bounce back light from vehicles, making cyclists visible from a distance. At bikebook, we recommend outfitting bikes with reflectors on wheels, pedals, and handlebars. But don't stop there! Adding front and rear lights is equally vital. A white light on the front signals your presence to oncoming traffic, while a red light at the back warns those behind you. The synergy between reflectors and lights creates a protective shield that envelops cyclists in a warm glow of safety, even in the darkest of nights. In a world full of fast-paced adventures, cycling provides families with a timeless way to bond and explore. With bikebook's dedication to connecting families with local bicycle mechanics, parents can ensure their children's bikes are in tip-top shape for every journey. Moreover, our commitment to promoting safety extends to night time cycling, where lights and reflectors become the stars guiding cyclists through the night. So, saddle up, families, and let bikebook be your guiding light to safer and more memorable cycling experiences. Raring2go! Safety when riding your bike at night Bicycle servicing made easy!

27 Raring2go! What to Do and Where to Go this Winter Start planning and get Ahead for Christmas! Straw poll! Do you feel totally stressed by the time that Christmas arrives? Preparation and organisation is the key to a stress-free festive season. Make lists, prioritise, decide what’s important or “nice to have”, and pick a cut-off date for planning. Christmas is for you to enjoy too! September - start planning! Once the kids are back at school, make a detailed list of everything you need to do. Make sure you use it! • Check what Christmas supplies you have. Your audit should include wrapping paper, sticky tape, gift tags, ribbons / bows, Christmas cards, decorations and even stamps. Don’t forget to check if your Christmas lights still work! • Make a gift list; identify what needs posting. You don’t want to spend more on postage than you do on the gift, so consider how to package up these items. Take advantage of 2 for 1 offers etc. and check what might need batteries. Set a budget and stick to it. • Book early! Grottos, pantos, and Christmas shows can get booked up quickly, so book early to get what you want. If you’re travelling, try to book early to get the cheapest tickets. October / November - Get going! • Declutter out-grown toys, clothes/books. Make space with a clear-out! Either sell / give away the items, or donate them to a local charity. • You can start cards and wrapping early. Write a few a day, rather than leaving it all until the last minute and don’t under-estimate how long wrapping takes. Check UK and international posting dates for cards and parcels. And... Don’t forget where you’ve hidden your children’s gifts! • Plan food! Cupboard staples can be bought and stored. Cook and freeze meals in advance, and remember to pre-order your turkey. December - Relax! Have fun decorating the tree, enjoy the children’s school nativity or show, watch family movies and spend quality time with family and friends.
