Can you believe Guildford Spectrum turned 30 in February? Like many locals, I have so many memories of weekend’s spent in the leisure pool as a child and celebrating friends’ birthday’s with bowling parties. Now, 30 years later I still love to visit Spectrum but now with a little person of my own! Guildford Spectrum really does offer families a full day out with different activities and food options there is something for everyone… Why not start your day on the ice? Guildford Spectrum houses an Olympic sized indoor ice rink and is the perfect place for friends and families to meet and test our their skills. They have regular skater from age 3 all the way to 99 years old so there is no excuse not to give it a go! After a chilly start why not warm up with a hot drink at the Freedom Café which overlooks the leisure pool. They serve hot and cold drinks as well as snacks and cakes so it’s a great place to sit back and relax before heading down for a swim. The Lesiure pool has to be the star attraction at Guildford Specturm with 8 amazing water slides, a crazy wave machine and an interactive children’s section. After you’ve tested out the slides don’t forget to ride the wave machine, which operates every 30 minutes! If you’ve brought the little ones with you then they also have an extensive range of high and low level interactive water features, from tipping buckets, spinning wheels and sprays for them to enjoy. What’s better is that all swimmers are guaranteed an hour and a half of pool time! Family Day’s Out at Guildford Spectrum After working up a hunger in the pool it’s time to stop for some lunch and there are a few different lunch options at Guildford Specturm because as well as The Freedom Café they also have Strikes Diner and Burrito Loco. Strikes is located on Level 1 down in Spectrum Bowl and is the perfect location to enjoy pizzas, chips and slushies! Or if you fancy something with a little more spice head to Burrito Loco. Serving authentic, delicious Mexican food that’s fresh, healthy and locally sourced. Find Burrito Loco on Level 2 overlooking the ice rink and the leisure pool. What better way to end the day than a family game of Tenpin bowling! Tenpin Bowling is a fantastic game that anyone can play and for younger bowlers or our less experienced bowlers you can have the lane bumpers up on your bowling lane. You can choose your own bowling ball weight and wear some funky bowling shoes if you like! All activities are bookable separately through Guildford Spectrum’s website guildfordspectrum.co.uk Raring2go! Focus on Guildford Spectrum

16 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! Become a Host Family this Summer Have you ever thought of becoming a host family for foreign students during the summer? If the thought of a little extra income and an introduction to a different culture appeals, then this could be perfect for you. My name is Cecilia Gregory and I run a small summer school in Wimbledon for eight weeks each year from the end of June to mid August. We teach English as a Foreign Language to young students aged 5-16. A few of the students aged 11 and above are placed with host families. Students are mainly European and their English improves dramatically if they can stay with a host family. Every year I need a few more excellent host families in the local area. What is a host family? A host family takes in one or two foreign students into their family for a period of 2-4 weeks. They are part of the family and take part in family activities whether going to the park, shopping, eating or watching television. Host families provide breakfast and dinner at home each day and a packed lunch from Monday to Saturday. Students are out all day from 9am to 4/5pm Monday to Saturday but are with the host family on Sunday. Can I be a host family? Being a host family is ideal for families with young children who may not be back at work or working part time. An adult member of the host family needs to be at home when the students return from school each day. All adults in the host family will be DBS checked before students are placed with them. English needs to be the main language spoken at home. Why be a host family? Many of our host families use the extra income to pay for summer holidays or to pay for activities over the holiday period. It’s also great experience for the host family to get to know children from another country and culture. Many become good friends and ask to return to the same family year after year! Does it matter where we live? As we are dealing with young students, host families need to be close to Wimbledon town centre. We have families in areas such as Wimbledon Park, Southfields, Merton Park and Raynes Park, as long as they are near a bus route or a train/tube station. If you are unsure if your area is suitable please contact me to discuss. How much will I earn? The amount paid will depend on the accommodation provided but will be between £250 and £270 per student per week. You are legally entitled to earn up to £7,500 a year in rental income before you have to start paying any tax. So depending on your circumstances, this could be tax-free income for your family. How do I become a host family? If you are interested then contact me, Cecilia Gregory, at the Summer School of English for a chat. Building connections and relationships Many young people struggle in their relationships with others, feeling isolated, disconnected and both anxious and afraid of meeting new people. Time spent on an Outward Bound residential helps build meaningful relationships, develop trust, cooperation and a sense of ‘connectedness’. 2. Tackling fear of failure Outward Bound courses are carefully designed so that failure can be positively experienced and overcome. Instructors help develop a positive relationship with failure by encouraging them to redefine it as a learning experience, where “fail” stands for “First Attempt In Learning”. 3. Building a sense of confidence Comfort zones are never easy to step out of but during an Outward Bound adventure young people learn to embrace new experiences and tackle things they have never done before. 3 ways an Outward Bound adventure improves wellbeing Taking part in an Outward Bound course gives young people the opportunity to build confidence and self-belief, to develop skills and to improve their relationships with others, providing them with the tools and resources they need to function well as individuals and to flourish in life – the very foundation of wellbeing. The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity that delivers life-enhancing adventures in some of the wildest corners of the UK.
