Holiday Camps / Clubs & Classes Back to School Bliss: Easing Your Child Into the New Term After Summer As the long, lazy days of summer draw to a close, many parents start to feel that familiar mix of relief and anxiety. There’s relief that routines are returning and anxiety about getting the kids back into school mode after six weeks of sun, never ending snacks and screens. But with a bit of gentle planning, preparing your child for the new school year can be a positive and even an enjoyable process. Start by resetting routines. Over the summer, bedtimes often shift later and mornings get slower. About two weeks before term starts, gradually move bedtime earlier and wake your child up a bit earlier each day. This helps avoid the shock of a sudden early start and gives their body clock time to adjust. Reintroducing structure doesn’t have to be dull. Bring back a sense of learning with light, fun activities like reading a chapter in a book together, playing educational games or even writing postcards which detail some of their summer adventures. This gently reactivates their academic brain without the pressure of homework. Talking about school is important too. Speak openly with your child about how they feel. Are they excited to see friends again? Nervous about a new teacher or jumping up to a new class? Reassure them with positive reminders of what they’ve enjoyed before and what they can look forward to. Getting organised can also be a great way to build excitement. Let your child help choose new school supplies or pick a special lunchbox. Lay out uniforms, pack bags and prep lunch ideas a few days before term starts to reduce last-minute stress. If possible, visit the school, especially if your child is transitioning to a new building or year group. Even a walk past the gates can help them reconnect with the environment. With a mixture of routine, reassurance and a little excitement, the back-to-school transition doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it really can be a lovely chance to reflect, reset and get ready for another year of learning and growth.
