Create a Mini Adventure Get children involved in pitching the tent, unrolling sleeping bags and setting up their temporary home for the night. Half the excitement comes from the preparation. Explore Your Own Backyard Challenge little explorers to spot insects, birds, interesting leaves or clouds. You could even create a simple nature scavenger hunt and see what treasures they discover. Stay Up for the Stars Summer evenings are perfect for stargazing. Wrap up in a blanket, look for constellations and see who can spot the first star. Children are often fascinated simply by slowing down and looking up. Don’t Forget the Snacks No camping trip is complete without something tasty to eat. Whether it’s toasted marshmallows, hot chocolate or a late-night picnic, food always seems to taste better outdoors. Let Their Imaginations Run Wild A tent can become a castle, pirate ship or secret hideout. One of the joys of back garden camping is seeing where children’s imaginations take them. If the weather turns or nobody sleeps, you’re only a few steps from home. That’s the beauty of a back garden adventure! Sometimes the simplest ideas create the biggest memories. Why not give it a try this summer? Back Garden Camping: All the Adventure, None of the Traffic! Back garden camping is firmly on our family’s summer bucket list this year. As much as I love the idea of a camping adventure, I also love being close to my own bathroom and kettle! For children, the adventure is often more important than the destination. A tent pitched a few metres from the back door can feel just as exciting as a campsite miles from home. 20 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

You’ll Need: 120ml milk 1 tbsp sugar A few drops of vanilla extract Ice cubes 6 tbsp salt 1 small zip-lock bag 1 large zip-lock bag Tried and Tested! I’ll admit, I never expect these science experiments to work, so I was pleasantly surprised when this one did! Our ice cream turned out a little milky, but it was edible (and rather nice). My 4-year-old son added plenty of sprinkles and happily ate the lot, so it can’t have been too bad! We used ordinary table salt as that’s all our local Co-op had in stock, but maybe rock salt might be worth a try. We’re also tempted to try cream instead of milk next time to see if it makes the ice cream a little richer. Like most good experiments, there was a bit of trial and error involved, but that’s all part of the fun! Shake Up Some Summer Science! Part science experiment, part summer treat – make your own ice cream with just a few simple ingredients! What To Do: 1. Pour the milk, sugar and vanilla into the small bag and seal tightly. 2. Fill the larger bag halfway with ice and add the salt. 3. Place the small bag inside the larger bag and seal. 4. Shake, roll and squish the bag for around 5-10 minutes until the mixture turns into ice cream. 5. Remove the small bag, wipe it clean and enjoy your homemade ice cream! The Science Bit Salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, making it extra cold. This allows the milk mixture to freeze into delicious ice cream while you shake, roll and squish! Raring2go! Tip: Why not add chocolate chips, strawberries or sprinkles for an extra-special summer treat? 25 Raring2go! RECIPE

For parents, Pharmacy First offers a fast and convenient way to access healthcare when a child develops an earache, sore throat, impetigo or an infected insect bite. Most pharmacies offer walk-in consultations, meaning you can often get help on the same day without waiting for a GP appointment. When Should I Seek Other Medical Help? Pharmacy First is designed for common conditions that can be safely managed by a pharmacist. However, if your child is seriously unwell, has difficulty breathing, develops a high fever that is not improving, becomes unusually drowsy, has signs of sepsis, or you are concerned that they need urgent medical attention, please contact NHS 111, your GP practice, or call 999 in an emergency. Your Community Pharmacy Can Help With More Than You Think In addition to Pharmacy First, community pharmacies can provide advice and support for minor illnesses, medicines, vaccinations, contraception, blood pressure checks and healthy living. The next time your child develops a common illness, think Pharmacy First. Your local pharmacist can provide expert NHS care quickly and conveniently, helping your child get back to school, learning and enjoying everyday life sooner. Save yourself a trip and check with your local pharmacy first – the right care, at the right time, in the right place. 27 How Do I Access the Service? Accessing Pharmacy First is simple. You can: • Walk into a participating community pharmacy and ask for a Pharmacy First consultation • Be referred by NHS 111 • Be referred by your GP practice or another healthcare professional Pharmacy First consultations are provided through the NHS and are free of charge. If treatment is required, standard NHS prescription charges may apply for people who normally pay for prescriptions. Many pharmacies are open during evenings, weekends and school holidays, making healthcare more accessible around busy family schedules. Raring2go! PHARMACY FIRST
