Registered Office: Lark Rise, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 2HS. rainbows.co.uk Rainbows is the only hospice in the East Midlands for babies, children and young people with a serious or terminal illness. Every day, its teams provide expert palliative and end-of-life care and compassionate support for their families. From its hospice in Loughborough and through its Hospice at Home, nurses in hospitals and community services, it reaches families across Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. This summer, Rainbows was awarded outstanding in all five areas by the Care Quality Commission for its services. It is the first ever children’s hospice to receive this and the only hospice (adult and children) in England to currently hold this. Rainbows’ services are wide ranging; providing palliative and end-of-life care, symptom management, emergency care, respite and short breaks and are available in the Hospice, at home and in hospitals. Willow’s mummy said: “At Rainbows we were able to be a family again. All three of us slept in the same room and that was amazing, it was so nice to be together. “Since that first stay, we love going to Rainbows. We have to be careful everywhere we go because of germs as Willow is so vulnerable. But at Rainbows, we always know she is safe. “Willow also loves Rainbows, she is non-stop smiles when she is there. We can’t take her to swim anywhere because temperatures are too cold and will shock her, but the Hydrotherapy Pool at Rainbows is so warm and Willow loves to go swimming. “We also go to Baby Group, Coffee Mornings and Parent and Carer Group. These all really help me not to feel isolated and it is so nice to have adult conversation with others who understand.” To find out more, visit rainbows.co.uk
10 ways to take control of your energy bills this Winter 1. Turn down your boiler temperature If you have a combi boiler, lowering the temperature of the water it sends to your radiators and your hot water tank will make it cheaper to run. 2. Turn down your heating Use less energy for heating your home by lowering your thermostat and turning down radiators in empty rooms. 3. S et your washing machine to 30°C Modern washing machines and laundry detergents clean clothes at lower temperatures. Save energy by: • Setting your washing machine to 30°C • Filling your machine completely • Using shorter wash cycles 4. Close the curtains at night Closing the curtains at night will stop warm air from escaping your home through the windows. This helps save money on heating. 5. Use energy-efficient bulbs Changing old bulbs to energy-efficient LED lights can save you up to £4 per bulb per year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. 6. Stop heat from escaping your home Block gaps around windows and doors to keep cold air out and stop warm air from escaping. Make sure you don’t block ventilation channels, like wall or window vents. 7. U se window film on single glazing When replacing single-glazed windows is not an option, window film helps keep heat in and save money on your heating bill. 8. Install smart thermostats and heating controls With smart thermostats and heating controls, you can set your heating and hot water to come on only when you need it, which saves money on your energy bills. 9. Insulate your home Home insulation is one of the best things you can do to keep your home warm and save energy. Even small changes can make a difference. For example, putting insulation behind radiators. 10. Get a smart meter A smart meter shows you how much energy you are using, which can help you use energy more efficiently. Your energy supplier can install a smart meter for free. Source: ofgem.gov.uk Raring2go! ENERGY SAVING 10 raring2go.co.uk

Raring2go! RARING2READ Overcoming Reading Challenges with Children Utilising technology can be a valuable tool in overcoming reading challenges. Educational apps and online resources designed to support literacy development offer a great interactive and engaging experience. These resources can act to supplement traditional reading methods and provide additional practice in a format that may appeal to more tech-savvy children. Above all, encouraging a love for reading is paramount. Making reading enjoyable through storytelling, creating a cozy reading nook, or incorporating themed activities can turn reading into a pleasurable experience rather than a daunting task. By tailoring strategies to individual needs and placing emphasis on the joy of reading we can guide children towards overcoming their challenges and build a foundation for a lifelong love of literature and reading. Overcoming reading challenges with your children requires patience, creativity, and a supportive approach that recognises and addresses individual needs. Children may encounter various hurdles on their journey to literacy and it’s crucial for parents and caregivers to adapt strategies that foster a positive reading experience. Firstly, identifying and addressing specific reading difficulties is essential. Whether a child struggles with decoding certain words, comprehension, or maintaining their focus, pinpointing the challenges allows for a targeted intervention. Tailoring the reading activities to the child’s level of proficiency ensures that the material is appropriately challenging without causing frustration. Creating a supportive and encouraging environment is key to overcoming reading challenges. Positive reinforcement, praise for effort and celebrating small victories contribute to building a child’s confidence and motivation. Patience is crucial; allowing children the time they need to progress at their own pace creates a deep sense of accomplishment and a more positive attitude towards reading. Incorporating a variety of reading can also be beneficial. Offering a mix of fiction and non-fiction books, graphic novels or audio books can provide diverse options that cater to different interests and learning styles. Interactive reading, asking open-ended questions, discussing the story, or relating it to the child’s experiences, engages them in a way that enhances comprehension and critical thinking. 12 raring2go.co.uk

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking trays with parchment paper. 2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry ingredient mixture aside. 3. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer or by hand, cream together the softened butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy. 4. Add the golden syrup, egg, and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until well combined. 5. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, mixing just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix. 6. Divide the dough in half and wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour or until it’s firm. 7. Roll out one portion of the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use gingerbread man-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and place them on the prepared baking trays. Repeat with the other half of the dough. 8. Bake the gingerbread men for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to brown. 9. Remove them from the oven and let them cool on the baking trays for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. 10. Once the cookies have cooled, you can decorate them with icing, sweets, or any other decorations you like. Enjoy your homemade gingerbread men! These are a perfect treat for kids and adults alike.

29 Raring2go! ADVERTISING THE (and why it still works!) POWER OF PRINT ADVERTISING In a world where we scroll past hundreds of online ads every day, there’s something special about holding something real in your hands. That’s what makes print so powerful - it sticks. Here’s why print marketing still works (and why local families love it!) IT BUILDS TRUST There’s just something about seeing your business in print that feels more genuine. A well-designed advert in a local magazine or a quality flyer gives off a sense of professionalism and care. Families are far more likely to trust what they can see and touch, than an ad that pops up between social posts. IT REACHES THE RIGHT PEOPLE Print lets you target your local community directly - no guesswork, no algorithms. When your message lands in a magazine like Raring2go!, it’s reaching the exact audience you want: local parents looking for places to go, things to do, and businesses that make family life easier. IT STANDS OUT Online, you’re competing with endless scrolls, videos, and ads. But in print? You’re right there on the page, with no distractions. A great design, a clever offer, or a friendly message can really catch someone’s eye - and stay in their mind long after they’ve turned the page. Print isn’t old-fashioned - it’s memorable. It’s trusted, local, and perfectly placed to help your business stand out from the digital noise. Would you like to advertise with us in the Spring edition of Raring2go? 30 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! WELLBEING A Mindful Start to the New Year After the chaos of Christmas - the wrapping paper tornado, sugar rushes, and endless to-do lists, January feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s the perfect time to slow down, press pause, and enjoy life’s simple moments again. Mindfulness doesn’t have to mean silence and yoga mats; it’s simply about noticing the little things, being present, and finding calm together as a family. Here are some lovely, free ways to start the year with a little more peace and presence. Take a Mindful Family Walk Wrap up warm and head out to one of our beautiful local spots - Bradgate Park, Beacon Hill, Burbage Common, Knighton Park... As you walk, challenge everyone to use their senses: What can you see? (frost on leaves, a squirrel, your breath in the air) What can you hear? (birds, wind, footsteps) What can you smell? (fresh air, pine, maybe someone’s Sunday roast!) This simple “five senses” walk helps children tune in to the world around them and gives parents a moment of calm, too! Make a “Good Things” Jar Find an empty jar and some scraps of paper. Every week, each family member writes down something good that happened - big or small, and adds it in. By next New Year’s Eve, you’ll have a whole jar of happy memories to read together. Reflect on the Year Gone By One rainy afternoon, snuggle up and ask everyone to share their favourite memory from last year. You could even draw or write them on paper and hang them up. It’s a simple way to celebrate your wins and remember how much joy there was in the everyday. Try “Tiny Moments of Calm” Mindfulness doesn’t need hours - it’s found in little pauses throughout the day. Take three slow breaths together before school or bedtime. Notice one thing you’re grateful for each morning. Spend 10 minutes together without any screens, just chatting or cuddling. Small, consistent moments make a big difference. Start a Family Tradition of Reflection Once a month, take a few minutes to talk about what’s gone well, what you’ve learned, or what you’re looking forward to. You’ll be surprised how much children enjoy these little moments of connection. However you begin 2026, remember - mindfulness isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about noticing the good that’s already there. Sometimes, the best family memories are made when you simply stop, breathe, and enjoy each other’s company.
