9 8 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! PLACES TO GO Raring2go! PLACES TO GO We have lots of great events happening. Visit our website for all the details. www.vindolanda.com Enjoy autumn with us at Roman Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum New visual arts trail to light up Northumberland this autumn. Illuminated Sheep will appear across Northumberland from 30 Sept - 2 Dec A brand new visual arts trail will light up Northumberland to celebrate the arrival of the Lindisfarne Gospels in the North East this autumn. Illuminated Sheep by Deepa Mann-Kler is inspired by the Gospels’ themes of light, sheep and pilgrimage, and will see a flock of life-sized sheep lit up in bright colours at some of the region’s most iconic locations including Bamburgh Castle, Vindolanda and Woodhorn Museum. You will be able to see the sheep at Roman Vindolanda between 7-9th October. With a special late night opening on 8th & 9th October so you can see the sheep illuminated, they will be located in the museum gardens. 8th & 9th October Vindolanda will be open from 10am until 8pm - last admission to the site is 6pm, illumination takes place from 6:30pm. Normal admission prices apply. Advance booking is not required. Friends of Vindolanda are admitted free to this event. Please bring a torch with you as it will get dark if you are staying to see the sheep illuminated. About the artist Deepa Mann-Kler is an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist, primarily creating neon and light installations that explore concepts of belonging and identity that are deeply rooted in communities. She has exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions in China, America, Germany and Ireland, and her previous work in the North East of England includes Lumiere in Durham. Deepa said, “Working with the team at the Queen’s Hall in Hexham to bring Illuminated Sheep to Northumberland has been a challenging, rewarding and a deeply fulfilling experience. I am so excited to see the full flock appear in the landscape. We need light, colour and humour now more than ever and as the nights art to draw in, I really hope that audiences flock to the installations and find joy in this shared experience.” Illuminated Sheep is part of Lindisfarne Gospels 2022 - a programme of events inspired by the display of the Lindisfarne Gospels in the North East in autumn 2022.This will be the first time the ancient book, the most spectacular manuscript to survive from Anglo-Saxon England, has been displayed in the city since 2000 and its first showing in the region since an exhibition in Durham in 2013. On loan from the British Library, the manuscript will take centre stage in an exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne from 17 September – 3 December 2022. Councillor Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council and North of Tyne Combined Authority Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative and Rural said, “Northumberland County Council are delighted to be commissioning this engaging and inclusive project with one of our anchor venues, Queen's Hall, Hexham. This is our amazing contribution to receiving the Gospels into the region. We support innovative artists that connect to our heritage and communities.” Illuminated Sheep will be at Bamburgh Castle from 30 September - 1 October before moving to Vindolanda from 7-9 October, Woodhorn Museum from 1416 October, and the Festival of Flame at Hexham Abbey on 2 December. An Art Trail of 40+ individual sheep adopted and customised by local communities can be found across Northumberland from October half term until the end of November as an Art Trail. Entry fees apply at venues hosting the flock, the Art Trail is free. Use #FindTheFlock @illumsheep on social media.

WHAT’S ON

27 26 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! FEATURE Every parent will tell you that keeping their child safe around roads is a constant worry. Whether you are travelling on foot, by car, by bike, or with a buggy or pushchair, it's vital to keep children as safe as possible near roads. Six children are killed or seriously injured on roads every day in the UK. Road traffic injuries are the biggest cause of death among young people worldwide. The good news is there are lots of things that can be done to improve road safety at a local level and Road Safety Week is an ideal opportunity to bring people together to work towards safer travel for all. Road Safety Week is organised by Brake, the road safety charity, and is sponsored by Arval, DHL and VisionTrack. It supports the Department for Transport's THINK! campaign. The theme of Road Safety Week 2022 is SAFE ROADS FOR ALL, bringing together communities and professionals to shout out for everyone's right to make safe and healthy journeys on safe roads. We will raise awareness of key areas of road safety supported by the Government, including safe roads, safe vehicles and speeds, the new hierarchy of road users, and the importance of inclusivity to keep us all safe on the roads, no matter who we are, or how we travel.Road Safety Week is Brake's biggest annual road safety campaign. Every year, thousands of schools, organisations and communities get involved to share important road safety messages, remember people affected by road death and injury, and raise funds to help Brake care for more road victims and campaign for safe roads for everyone.
