9 Raring2go! PLACES TO GO A fantastic adventure into the region’s rich Roman history is ready and waiting at the internationallyrenowned attractions Vindolanda Fort Museum and the Roman Army Museum. You can visit these attractions with a super value ticket which gives you entry to both places. Located next to one of the most stunning sections of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, take a journey back in time almost 2,000 years and let your imagination run wild as you explore the remains of the Roman auxiliary fort and experience life as a Roman soldier. With 2022 being the year that Hadrian’s Wall celebrates its 1900th birthday there is also a bumper events programme too. The Roman Army Museum uses clever technology to bring the past to life. There is a Latin classroom with a holographic Roman teacher, try your hand at archery with an interactive bow and don’t miss the award-winning 3D film which takes you on an eagle’s eye journey over Hadrian’s Wall. This is the perfect place to start your Hadrian’s Wall adventure and you can even visit the recruitment tent and sign up for 25 years in the army, if you’ve enjoyed it that much! Behind the museum, buried under the lush grass is the Roman fort of Magna. Visitors to the museum can join one of the free guided tours that take place throughout the summer to find out what secrets this ancient fort may hold. Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum is where you not only get to see the world-famous excavations taking place but it is also the home of Britain’s top treasures: the Vindolanda writing tablets. These thin wooden postcards are covered in personal handwritten messages and reveal astonishing details about daily life nearly 2,000 years ago. Some of these precious documents are on display in the on-site museum, along with stunning display of leather shoes, the only Roman boxing gloves ever found and even a wooden toilet seat. If you’ve not been to Vindolanda before then this is the year to go and if you’ve not visited for a few years’ then go back – it just keeps getting bigger and better. It is recommended you allow a day to see both attractions and you might manage a short walk as well with Walltown Crags, an impressive section of Hadrian’s Wall, only 15 minutes by foot from the Roman Army Museum. The two attractions offer free parking for visitors, cafes, shops, unique exhibits, live archaeology and family friendly events: this is an unforgettable and full day out.

11 Raring2go! ADVERTISING FEATURE Look after your life A new *study has found that only a quarter of Brits have life insurance or critical insurance cover policies in place despite two in five knowing someone who has had a serious accident or been too ill to work. Compared to protection for our homes (55%), cars (53%) and travel plans (20%), the take-up of insurance policies relating to our own life is surprisingly low (25%). Life insurance provides crucial peace of mind that those we leave behind won’t suffer financially, while Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover are a vital defence against loss of income. England midfielder Katie Zelem said: “Getting to meet all the Girlguiding members was just incredible. They picked up the activities so quickly and we all had an amazing time on the pitch talking about the game. As a former Rainbow, myself, it’s fantastic to be involved in such an important partnership” Teammate Ella Toone added:“I wish something similar had existed when I was younger, and I look forward to the tournament this summer knowing that Girlguiding members all over the country will be cheering us on with energy and passion.” Recent research commissioned by CHILDWISE found almost one third (32%) of girls aged 7-17 would like more opportunities to play football and more than half of girls (52%) have never watched football in a stadium, compared to 33% of boys. The research also found 69% of girls would like to see women’s football celebrated more in the media and 71% of all children (boys and girls) think female footballers should be paid the same as male footballers1. Girlguiding Advocate Caitlyn, 22, added:“Football is such a great sport, to play and to watch. I’m so excited Girlguiding and UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 have teamed up to help more girls to get involved. The co-created activities are a great way to introduce girls to the game and get across the message that football is for everyone, not just for boys.” Girlguiding and UEFA women’s EURO 2022 join forces to get more girls & young women playing football Raring2go!
