Welcome A warm welcome to the SUMMER EDITION Welcome to the vibrant and sunsoaked summer edition of Raring2go! Northumberland. In this edition, I have curated a collection of events, holiday clubs, shows and activities that celebrate the essence of the Northumberland summer and family togetherness. Northumberland National Park is a favourite go-to place for my family all year round and we are excited to see Shaun the Sheep is coming to The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre from the 29th of June to the 8th of September! For all the details visit www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk. (p.23). Summer is also a timely reminder of the importance of keeping safe in and around water. Teaching instinctive Water Safety and First Aid skills at an early age provides children with knowledge for life. It also equips children, parents and carers with the knowledge and confidence to know what to do should an emergency occur. Big thank you to Lynsey Carr from Seahouses RNLI for providing the features. Please take the time to discuss the content with your children and make sure you pop along to one of the RNLI Family Days and fundraising events this summer (p.19). For those school holiday afternoons when you need a break and a cuppa in peace, our website is loaded with colouring sheets, craft ideas and easy-to-follow recipes to keep your child busy. As always, information is correct at the time of print, but events can be subject to change, so check with the provider before attending. In addition to the magazine, new content is loaded daily to our regional website so check-in regularly and sign up for our free monthly e-newsletter. Lastly, a big thank you to all the schools, nurseries and library centres for distributing Raring2go! to family households in the region. Have a lovely summer break and I will see you again in theAutumn term. Wishing you a safe, happy and sunshine-filled school holiday. Warm regards, Rachael Rachael Dempsey Editor & Owner Raring2go! LOCALSERVICES The school holidays! A time for relaxation, fun, and adventure...but also a time for chaos, tantrums, and exhaustion. Here are some tips to help you survive the summer holidays: PLAN Create a schedule to ensure everyone knows what's happening and when. CLUBS& CLAS ES Stay Safe this Summer ALWAYS watch children around water and securely cover or empty water vessels after use (including baths, paddling pools and buckets). Choose to swim in areas supervised by lifeguards where possible. No matter your age, learning to swim is one of the best ways to be safer in and around water. Visit the Raring2go! website for a full listing of local swim classes. Learn First Aid, it saves lives. Accidents such as choking, burns, allergic reactions and falls can happen at any time. Understanding first aid techniques specific to children can make all the difference and help you stay calm and focused during critical moments. 1. 2. 3. 4. Wear at least SPF30 sunscreen and apply to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and back of hands. Take extra care to protect babies and children from the sun as their skin is much more sensitive and can burn even on a cloudy day. Children should cover up with suitable clothing and spend time in the shade from 11am to 3pm. Stay hydrated this summer by drinking plenty of water, especially if you are active or outside in the heat. Know the signs of heat stroke and take necessary precautions so you don’t overexert yourself on warmer days. 16
