15 Raring2go! In December there’s one warming treat that is especially welcomed. This treat is popular the world over as delicious way of keeping the cold at bay. You’ve guessed it… we’re talking about Roast Chestnuts. They are more often seen at this time of year than any other. You’ll spot them being cooked by street food vendors at Christmas markets, fetes and along the road. The spicy scent is strong and is instantly recognised by our keen sense of smell. It is said that a mere passing waft from a chestnut which is roasting slowly, is more than enough to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. Chestnuts have a long and auspicious history. One of the world’s greatest military generals, Alexander the Great, together with the Romans, is reported to have planted chestnuts all across Europe. The trees that were planted spread from the mountainous Mediterranean regions where it was known that certain grains did not to grow well. Chestnuts quickly became a staple and versatile food source for locals and a form of currency used in bartering for other goods. Ancient Greeks ground their chestnuts into flour and made chestnut bread whilst in other cultures, chestnut trees were grown specifically for their wood. So what’s the History of Roast Chestnuts Day? Roast Chestnut’s Day is a relatively new day in the calendar, but the practice of roasting chestnuts has been around for centuries. Although it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when they started to become so popular, historians pencil the 16th century as being a turning point, when the nuts would be sold by street vendors to anyone wanting a quick and warming snack. When chestnuts are carefully roasted, a natural sweetness is revealed. This makes them an ideal snack if you want something to stave off a sweet tooth that also happens to be quite nutritious. Chestnuts are comparatively low in calories, known as a good source of fibre as well as being very rich in vitamin C. Although technically they are nuts, they taste very unlike other nuts. The sweet, earthy taste is worth a try if you’ve never had one before and Roast Chestnuts Day is the perfect time to try that first one. Celebrate Roast Chestnuts Day by making your own. They’re easy to roast and we’ve got this great recipe for you to try. Just click on this page and you’ll be taken there. We can almost smell the roasting chestnuts already.... Let’s honour the Roast Chestnut! December 14th is Roast Chestnut Day! It’s when we officially mark the now quite ancient tradition of roasting chestnuts particularly during the festive season.

Another popular one when we were kids was Operation which literally caused us to jump out of our skin when the buzzer sounded. Times and games have moved on and there’s so much more choice these days that it’s very hard to keep up. Thankfully though, for many years now, the annual ‘Games Day’ has been a great way to celebrate games and get to know some new ones which have emerged... in short, its a great excuse to enjoy games and gaming. Originally, Games Day was the name given to an annual gaming convention that first took place in 1975. It was sponsored by the well known British game production company Games Workshop and it usually took place in Birmingham. In 1975 the games convention in August got cancelled, so Games Workshop decided to fill in the gap by having its own convention. After a few delays, and much frantic planning it finally held its event on December 20 at Seymour Hall in London. The company, which started out producing more traditional games like backgammon, later moved on to fantasy games like Warhammer. At the time, the convention was groundbreaking, since there were very few outlets for gamers to come together and play together. The event, naturally contributed to the growth of the gaming scene in the U.K. Soon enough, similar conventions started showing up all over the U.S. and became very popular. They were clearly the best single platform to showcase both gamers and gaming companies. Now you know how Games Day first began, surely the best way to honor this day is to play some games and have lots of fun doing so. Games Day is an ideal time to sit with your friends or family for carefree fun and lots of laughter! We dare say there’ll be some fierce competition too, but this is what it’s all about. Games Day is the perfect time to get together with as many people as you wish. To choose your favourite game or games and to play them, keeping all your guests happily entertained. You must remember, it doesn’t have to be just once a year either! you can make it a regular catch up with guaranteed fun! Considering they are a fun break from routine, games have been around in some form or the other throughout our civilization. After all, games sharpen our problem-solving abilities, our goal focused strategies, focus and concentration, coordination and communication skills, social interaction and multi-tasking. You may not realise all this when playing but the benefits of a good game can be felt for a long time after the actual game has ended. So what are you waiting for? Dust off your board games, shuffle a desk of cards or fire up your PS4... it matters not what you play but that you play and that you enjoy what you play too. What games do you most enjoy? Board games, card games, or maybe video games? Whatever game is your favourite, this is the day to play it and have fun! On 20th December 2022 we celebrate all things gaming!
