Raring2go! Raring2go! 2 raring2go.co.uk 3 I am so looking forward to these Summer holidays! However, as much as I plan to be organised and stay calm, by week 4 I cannot even think straight! Fortunately, we have lots going on in Portsmouth and it is well worth getting out the house, not only for your kids, but for your own sanity! I would highly recommend buying the Ultimate Explorer ticket from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (pg.12), which allows family entry into a variety of locations for a full year! They hold lots of exciting events, and with lovely places to eat, you can make a day of it. Also, Fort Nelson has an Assault course running so get the kids active and cheer them on! Portsmouth also has a fantastic new camp which revolves around the Junior Field Gun Sport (pg. 11). This easy to learn team sport will build stamina and is something new and exciting for children to try out this Summer. And finally a big thank you to Port Solent (pg.8) who will be running free kids clubs this Summer, which are loads of fun and always keep the kids entertained! So get your children to fill in their Summer Bucket List on pg. 25 and with your R2G mag, plot your plans for the holidays in your calendar and you can keep referring back to it. Staying organised is key (or so I keep telling myself)! Also keep checking the Raring2go/portsmouth website for the latest events in the area. Have a fab Summer! Raring2go! 15 Raring2go! 14 . There is a lot to love about this Summer and one of the most anticipated events is the Commonwealth Games! A fantastic array of sports will be on offer to watch live in Birmingham or on the television, and the best part is that it gives us a chance to watch sports that we don’t know much about and which aren’t televised as often as the more well-known sports. This is great exposure for swimming, gymnastics, judo and so many more and will get our kids excited about giving a new sport a go! The Importance of Sports and Emotional Development in Children There are countless positive reasons why sports are important for children. The camaraderie and team spirit that is built from playing a sport is a vital part of a BRING ON THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES! Thursday, 28 July - Monday, 8 August 2022 child’s development. Even independent sports, such as singles tennis, wrestling, gymnastics, track and field and so on, offer children an opportunity to meet other kids who have the same interests as themselves and this helps towards building friendships. The competitiveness in sports is also an excellent way to learn how to deal with the emotions of winning and losing. Being able to mentally cope with the highs and lows of sports, is a good way to learn that things don’t always go to plan and to get up and try again. The elements of sportsmanship are respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integrity and good citizenship. These are attributes we are all trying to instil in our children and sports are a superb way of gaining these qualities. Research has been conducted around the world as to the benefits of leading an active lifestyle versus that of a sedentary one. Here are a few of the emotional and physical benefits to being active: Emotional Skills • Healthy self-esteem and body image • Social interaction • Sportsmanship • Leadership development • Increased concentration and focus • Decreases stress and depression Physical Benefits of Sports • Better body control • An early start in sports helps build cardiorespiratory fitness and health. • Increased strength in muscles and bones. • Increased stamina • Helps manage weight • Better sleep quality Sporting events are an opportunity for our sporting heros and teams to show what they are capable of and gives them an opportunity to put all their hard work to test against the best in the world. Underpinning all this remarkable physical achievement is the uniting factor of sport - the sportsmanship, friendship and the exposure to other cultures and countries that makes sporting events, such as the Commonwealth Games, a uniting and exciting experience.

The girls had the opportunity to try out new football related activities cocreated by Girlguiding and UEFA, before trying their hand at being a sports journalist during a girlled press conference. England midfielder Katie Zelem said:“Getting to meet all the Girlguiding members was incredible. Raring2go! Raring2go! 20 raring2go.co.uk 21 https://www.facebook.com/groups/raring2grow Raring2grow! HOME GARDENING IDEAS FOR FAMILIES ‘Gardening is the purest of human pleasures’ Francis Bacon www.raring2go.co.uk For more great tips click here to visit our Raring2grow! Facebook page Raring2Growing your own The last couple of years have seen many of us have a go at ‘growing your own’. There have been some really good results too, not only in terms of the delicious end product but also for the mental health benefits gardening gives us all. So if you haven’t tried it yet, here are a few idea to help you set up your very own ‘Raring2grow garden’… Where to plant out? Where you choose to ‘plant out’ is up to you, it can be as small as a pot, window box, grow bag or a plot in the garden, size doesn’t matter as long as it's a sunny spot. When is the best time to start planting? March, April and May are the best months in which to sew your seeds. Always read the back of the seed packet for planting information as it can differ. What are the easiest plants to grow? Hardy vegetables are a good choice. Tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, spring onions, runner beans, broad beans, peas & salad greens. Also, strawberries, courgettes and beetroot are all popular, there’s so much choice. What other plants to consider? For Spring, snowdrops, tulips, crocus, hyacinths and daffodils are just a few beautiful plants that will offer colour and variation to your garden with very little effort. How to involve the kids? Getting children involved in growing their own vegetables gives them a real sense of responsibility and helps them appreciate the value of eating home grown produce and eating healthy, so involve them from the off, planting seeds in their left over yoghurt pots is a great message about recycling. I’m sure we all have happy memories about seeing the cress seeds growing in junior school! Here's wishing you every success with your Spring planting! Raring2go! Raring2go! 24 raring2go.co.uk 25 Here are seven tips on how you can help your child learn how to do playtime solo. 1. Get Them Started Children will pick up things, and play with them if they’re interested. But sometimes, they’ll immediately grow bored if their imagination runs dry. That’s why they need an endless well of inspiration to make solo playtime last longer. By spending the first few minutes helping your child do an activity (such as building a fort or starting a puzzle with them), they’ll stick with it for a while longer. 2. Have The Right Toys Having the right toys is essential. If the child gravitates to a few toys, then have those particular items available. You can even show them other toys that they didn’t know they had. 3. Don’t Answer Every Request Your child should be able to have plenty of things to play with on their own. However, if you stop, every once in a while, to answer your child’s every whim, then it stops them from playing alone. 4. No Distractions Television, loud music, or other siblings may cause distractions during solo play. Have your child settle down to play on their own by turning off the TV, opting for calming background music (or no music at all), and giving them space away from their siblings. That way, your child will be able to better focus on playing alone. 5. AdmireWhat They’re Doing At A Distance You may respond to one or two requests, but don’t interrupt your child’s playtime. Though, if your child says something like “Watch this!”or “Look what I’ve made!” you can tell them how you like what they’re doing or what they’ve made – just make those comments brief. 6. Talk About It Afterwards Once your child has done solo playtime for the day, sit down with them and talk about the experience. This gives your child the opportunity to tell you how they had spent their time playing alone, and the “adventures” that they had in doing so. 7. Make Time Scheduling can be hectic, when it comes to your child. So, be sure to structure your child’s day, so that they have time to play alone (at least ten minutes a day, when possible). Conclusion Children will need to learn this skill at some point. Playing alone helps them learn: • to focus, and stay focused on a task • to be independent by using creativity • to understand that their parents are some • times busy and can’t be there right away, • AND • to appreciate what they already have Be sure to keep these tips in mind, the next time you want your child to play by themselves for a while. Tips On How Kids Can Learn Solo Play 7The first five years of a child’s life should revolve around learning to socialize with other children. But now that they’re older, they’ll need to learn how to play alone. If this isn’t taught, the child will grow bored and restless. What should you do?
