Raring2go! 15 However it goes in your home, research has shown that one of the benefits of homework is teaching children how to take responsibility for tasks, how to work independently, make choices and problem solve. These are all vital skills for later life, so it is well worth investing a bit of time now at the start of the school year. Here are a few tips to help you and ensure things go as smoothly as possible. Remind them of the benefits of homework. Tell them that just as in any sport, in order to get really good at something, they need to put the time in. Tell them also that doing their homework will make classwork easier! Set up a homework friendly area, with good light and a good supply of pens, pencils, paper etc. Set up a regular homework time, so that all expectations are set. Some children work best in the afternoon, after a snack and a little bit of ‘chill out’ time (that doesn’t involve a screen). Others work best after dinner. You’ll quickly get to grips with when is best for your children. Keep discussions to a minimum! Make sure the TV is switched off and there is no loud music that could distract or interrupt them. Make sure children do their own work. It is important to show an interest in your child’s homework and offer guidance when it gets tricky, but children need to ‘own’ their work and this includes their mistakes too! Evidence suggests that our productivity levels increase when we feel that our efforts are being paid attention to. If your child feels like you’re interested in their school work, they’ll be more likely to want to do well. Build in a reward scheme. If the going gets tough as it sometimes will, you might find that setting small, achievable goals with rewards at the end could help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t hold back if you think your child is struggling. Seek help and reassurance from the teacher at the very first signs. They will be happy to help. Praise them and display their work on the fridge or on your family notice board.Let your relatives and visitors to your home know what a great job they’ve done and remember to pat yourself on the back too!
