Raring2go! What’s On 4 raring2go.co.uk A trip to the theatre holds a truly unique and invaluable appeal for children, offering an enriching experience that far surpasses the passive nature of watching television. The live, interactive nature of theatre provides a great number of educational, emotional and dare we say developmental advantages that TV often struggles to replicate or come close to. Firstly, theatre is a sensory feast that engages multiple senses simultaneously. Children see the vibrant costumes, hear the live music, soak up the dialogue and feel the excitement in the air. This multisensory experience not only captivates their attention but it also acts to enhance their overall understanding and appreciation of the performance. In contrast, television, though visually stimulating, lacks the immediacy and immersive quality of a live theatre production. Signifiicangtly, attending a live performance encourages great social skills and etiquette in children. The theatre setting requires them to be attentive, considerate of others and follow certain behavioral norms and each of these contribute to the development of patience and respect. Interacting with fellow audience members and responding to the performers in real-time enhances their ability to engage in a shared cultural experience. It teaches them the importance of live social interaction, a skill that never demands enough emphasis in a world today that is dominated by screens. Theatre also sparks children's imagination and creativity in a way that television cannot. Witnessing live actors, set changes, and the transformation of characters on stage further encourages a deeper level of imaginative thinking. Children are prompted to fill in the gaps with their own interpretations, creating critical thinking skills and a sense of creativity that goes far beyond passive consumption. Additionally, live theatre provides a sense of connection and community. Shared laughter, gasps of surprise and applause create a more collective experience that unites people and brings them together. This shared sense of enjoyment and emotional engagement is a powerful aspect of theatre, promoting a sense of belonging and shared culture. While television has its merits, a family trip to the theatre offers a far more dynamic, interactive, and multi-sensory experience that contributes significantly to a child's cognitive, emotional, and social development. The magic of live performances ‘the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd’ has the potential to ignite a lifelong love for the arts and a deeper understanding of the world around them. With screens already dominating our lives in so many ways, isn’t it a nice thought that we still have a place we can go where we can excape and watch real drama, real comedy and real tragedy unfold. The Thrill of The Theatre: The smell of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd

Raring2go! Clubs & Classes 23 Little Kickers have four different football classes each tailored to a different age group. However, they have two core beliefs that we take into every session. Firstly, they believe in something we call “Play not Push”. It means teaching football in a fun, pressurefree environment. They want to give children a positive introduction to sport as a whole, not just football, so they’re more likely to stay healthy and active throughout their lives. Secondly, they believe football can be educational. Coached in the right way it can stimulate imagination and aid early development skills such as learning colours and numbers, following instructions and playing as a team. It’s an approach that has bagged them numerous awards and helped them expand globally over the last 16 years. And like all their Kickers, they never stop learning. They’re continually improving and updating classes, based on feedback and input from child health specialists as well as their network of over 2,250 football coaches worldwide. If you’d like to know how Little Kickers started you can read more them here www.littlekickers.co.uk For more details about local classes call 07532180852 Email bmorton@littlekickers.co.uk

Crafting Comfort: A beginners guide to knitting. Ready to get ‘hooked’? Knitting, with its rhythmic repetition and tactile satisfaction, has been a beloved craft for generations. Whether you're a novice or looking to rekindle your love for wool, here's a step-by-step guide on how to knit and create your cosy masterpieces. This is just an initial guide designed to get you started.... CASTING ON: The first step in knitting is to cast the wool onto the needle. This will provide the first row of stitches which is usually the bottom edge of the piece you’re knitting. Loop Knot: To start your first row of stitches you need to make a loop knot (slip knot) on the needle. Make the loop knot about 15 cm from the end of the wool. Insert the needle under the short length of the wool then draw the needle through the loop and tighten the knot. There are several methods used for casting on. Each method will produce a slightly different edge look. Below are three main methods. 1. The Thumb Method - Using One Needle: Place the needle in your right hand and wrap the wool from the ball around your left thumb, holding onto the wool with your left fingers. 2. Twist your left hand so that your thumb is facing you and point your first finger. Place the needle through the loop from front to back. 3. Remove your left thumb whilst pulling the wool down. This will close the loop. Repeat these steps until you have cast on the desired number of stitches. 4.Knitting On Method - Using Two Needles: Place the needle with the loop knot in your left hand. Then place the right hand needle through the loop, under the left hand needle as pictured. (below) Holding the wool from the ball in your right hand, place the wool around the point of the right hand needle and back under the point of the left hand needle - as for knitting. 5. Bring the right hand needle up from under the left hand needle and draw the wool up so there is a loop on the right hand needle. Place the left hand needle through the back of the loop on the right hand needle and remove the right hand needle thus leaving two loops on the left hand needle. Repeat these steps until you have cast on the desired number of stitches. Knitting is far more than a craft; it is a sensory pleasure. The gentle click of needles and the vibrant transformation of coloured wool thread into a warm item of hand made clothing. This is but a brief glimpse into knitting. Patience and a degree of perseverance are both parts of the knitting tool-kit. See online for endless guidance, techniques, patterns and free content. Raring2go! Raring2make! 30 raring2go.co.uk
Raring2go! 1 Ingredients and utensils you’ll need 175g unsalted butter, 100g caster sugar, 50g dark muscovado sugar, 4 tablespoons golden syrup, 200g plain flour, 150g wholemeal plain flour, 1 tablespoon good quality cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, pinch of salt Additional items: baking sheet, baking paper, icing nozzle, cookie cutters, ribbon, palette knife. 1.First, using a bowl big enough to contain all of the ingredients, sift together both of the flours, cocoa powder, ginger, cinnamon and bicarbonate of soda. Add a good pinch of salt. 2. Place the butter, sugar and golden syrup into a heavy bottomed saucepan. Place the pan over a low heat and stir occasionally until everything has melted to make a smooth mixture. Pour this liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon. Mix well to make a firm dough. 3. Tip out the dough onto a lightly floured worktop and wait until the dough is cool enough to handle before kneading. Gently knead until you have a supple dough – be sure not to over-work the dough though. 4. Line a baking sheet with baking paper and preheat the oven to 180º. Now roll out the dough to a 1cm thickness, ensuring the worktop is lightly floured to prevent the dough sticking. Cut out your shapes using cookie cutters of your choice. Remember to cut out holes if you’re going to be hanging your cooked biscuits. A nozzle tip makes a handy tool for cutting small holes. A palette knife is useful for transferring the cut cookies to the baking sheet. If you have time, chilling the cut shapes on the baking sheet before cooking also helps to prevent the dough from spreading when baking. Baking time takes around 12 minutes but can vary from oven to oven. When baked, remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack. The biscuits will firm up when they cool down. 5. Optional extra... when cool, the biscuits can be decorated with royal icing available from most high streets. Disposable piping bags are great for little hands, making it easy for the kids to decorate their cookies. 6. Finally, thread some ribbon through the holes in the cookies to hang on the tree. It may be worth baking a big batch – as these will probably not last long! Raring2make!
