Raring2go! WELLBEING 13 Supporting Students with Exams As we begin 2026, many schools will be beginning their GCSE and A-Level mock exams. We have shared practical strategies to help students navigate exam stress while maintaining balance. We hope these tips will be valuable as you prepare for the months ahead. • OPEN COMMUNICATION Encourage students to express their concerns in a compassionate and non-judgmental environment. Remind them that feeling nervous is normal and help them develop strategies to manage exam stress. Open communication creates a safe space for students to share their feelings and seek support. • QUALITY TIME Balancing revision with family and social activities is essential. Help students structure their schedules to include time for both study and relaxation. For example, encourage them to dedicate an hour or two to revision before participating in other activities. This balance promotes emotional wellbeing and reduces burnout. • INDEPENDENT PROBLEM SOLVING Support students in developing problem-solving skills by guiding rather than resolving challenges for them. This fosters resilience and builds confidence in their ability to handle difficulties. If a student is struggling, work collaboratively to identify their needs and implement a plan of action, with regular check-ins to adjust as needed. • MISTAKES ARE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Help students view mistakes as a natural part of growth rather than failures. By adopting a growth mindset, students can approach challenges with curiosity and determination. Encourage them to seek support from teachers or peers and model a positive response to setbacks. • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Physical exercise is a proven stress reliever. Suggest family walks or other outdoor activities that combine movement and relaxation. Exercise not only supports mental health but also improves sleep quality and focus. • TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS Assist students in creating balanced schedules that include study time, breaks, and leisure. Breaks are critical for maintaining focus and improving information retention. Encourage them to engage in hobbies and social activities to recharge. • ADEQUATE SLEEP A consistent sleep schedule is vital for memory consolidation and cognitive function. Help students establish bedtime routines that support relaxation, such as reading or taking a shower, while minimising screen time. At the Purple House Clinic Birmingham, we specialise in supporting students’ mental health and resilience.
14 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! THINGS TO DO 6 Winter Warmers 1. D iscover something new There are lots of amazing museums around our region with exhibitions and displays covering just about any period of history or topic you can imagine. From the quirky interactive creations at The MAD Museum, Stratford to the Anglo-Saxon gold of the Staffordshire Hoard at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery or Thinktank’s mini city, MiniBrum, to Dippy the Dinosaur (until 28 February 2026) at Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry – there’s an option to suit virtually any family. 2. B ounce around and let off steam Children of all ages sometimes just need to burn off that excess energy but finding them the opportunity to do it without needing to brave the elements can be tough. Trampoline parks like Airhop Birmingham (previously Rush) and Airhop Warwick (previously JumpIn) are a perfect way to wear them out whatever the weather. 3. V isit a role play café There are now a number of role-play centres in our area. If you haven’t visited one with your child yet, why not while away a few hours in a make believe world and forget the grey, cold weather outside? If you and your little one have enjoyed a trip to one before why not try somewhere new. Solihull Play Town, Mini Valley Kids and Mini Mugs Funhouse are all fantastic places to start – and all have a great café so you can grab a coffee and treat yourself while you are there! Don’t let the great British weather stop you from having family fun and making memories this Winter.
Raring2go! THINGS TO DO 15 5. Immerse yourself in a tropical paradise Come rain or shine you can always enjoy the world’s most beautiful butterflies at Stratford Butterfly Farm. There is so much more to see than just butterflies though with a range of other minibeasts and even a caiman! 4. Lose yourself in a story We have a number of fabulous local theatres that often have shows in their schedule for families and young children. Have a look at what is coming up at places like Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, The Alexandra Theatre and Birmingham Hippodrome to see if something takes their fancy – this time of year is perfect to introduce younger children to live theatre but also a great way to get older kids off of their screens. 6. There’s more to shopping centres than retail therapy Look out for family friendly activities at our local shopping centres, like Resorts World and Touchwood. There are often sessions organised during school holidays and sometimes at the weekend that are free and don’t require booking in advance. Always make sure you check before you turn up as occasionally time slots do need to be reserved or there is a small charge to take part.

Raring2go! EDUCATION 27 Why Reading for Pleasure Matters More Than Ever! In today’s fast-moving digital world, encouraging children to read for pleasure might seem like a small act - but it’s one with lifelong impact. More than just a way to boost literacy, reading for enjoyment helps children develop imagination, empathy, and emotional wellbeing. Children who read regularly for fun tend to perform better academically, but the benefits go far beyond school. Stories allow young readers to explore different cultures, ideas, and emotions, helping them understand the world - and themselves - in deeper ways. Whether it’s a magical adventure or a story about everyday life, books offer a safe space for children to reflect, dream, and grow. And it’s not just books that count! Comics, magazines and graphic novels are all a great way to engage your child with reading. Reading also supports mental health. It provides a calming escape from daily pressures and helps children build resilience by seeing characters overcome challenges. In a time when children face increasing stress, reading can be a powerful tool for emotional support. Parents and carers play a vital role in nurturing this habit. It doesn’t require expensive resources - just access to books that reflect your child’s interests and a little time to read together. Visiting your local library, sharing bedtime stories, or simply talking about books can spark a lifelong love of reading. Louisa Ackling, Service Development and Engagement Manager for Worcestershire Libraries, states: “When children discover the magic of reading for themselves, it opens doors to lifelong learning and confidence. It’s not just about literacy - it’s about giving every child the chance to imagine, explore, and grow.” So, next time your child picks up a book, celebrate it. Reading for pleasure is one of the simplest, most powerful gifts you can give - and it starts with just one story.
28 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! RECIPE Gingerbread Men A classic that can be made and enjoyed all year round… It’s quick and easy and definitely one for the kids to join in with preparing! Ingredients 225g Plain flour 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 75g unsalted butter, softened 100g soft brown sugar 100g Golden Syrup 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Method 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with baking paper. 2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry ingredient mixture aside. 3. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer or by hand, cream together the softened butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy. 4. Add the golden syrup, egg, and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until well combined. 5. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, mixing just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix. 6. Divide the dough in half and wrap each portion in plastic wrap. Refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour or until it’s firm. 7. Roll out one portion of the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use gingerbread man shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Repeat with the other half of the dough. 8. Bake the gingerbread men for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to brown. 9. Remove them from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. 10. Once the cookies have cooled, you can decorate them with icing, sweets, or any other decorations you like.
