Raring2go! St Abans & Harpenden
20 raring2go A transformation is underway in Wheathampstead. From disused church to community gym. When Wheathampstead United Church could no longer maintain its Victorian church on Brewhouse Hill it fell empty in 2012. But nobody wanted to lose this beautiful, iconic building. The Church wanted to use it for the community. And so, a few years ago, The Chapel Gym project was born. The gym will operate as not - for - profit and be run largely by volunteers. Our aim is to be open to everyone in the village, regardless of income, age, fitness levels or ability. And to offer something for those with medical conditions or disabilities, those at risk of long - term health problems, or anyone unused to exercising. Now more than ever we realise we could all be fitter and healthier and how important that is, both physically and emotionally. There will be gym equipment and support from fitness experts to use it. And a space for a whole variety of exercise classes run by trained instructors, from high intensity to low impact sessions such as yoga or chair - based exercise. There is already masses of interest from people from age 10 to 70. A group of village volunteers has been working hard to restore the building. While much of the less - skilled work has been done by an action group and friends, they ’ ve also been raising thousands of pounds to repair and insulate the roof, strengthen the floor, repair and protect the windows and much more. There is still work to be done and money needed to finish the interior and buy the gym equipment with regular working parties on Saturday mornings for decorating and general DIY. Many hands make light work – we ’ d love you to join us. The coffee from Brewhouse Coffee is on us! Email Julie on julie@chapelgym.co.uk if you can help or to go on our mailing list or follow us on Facebook and look out for news of upcoming fundraising events.
