What have presenter Alexander Armstrong, cricket superstar Alastair Cook andSaturday Kitchen wine expert Olly Smith have in common? They are all former cathedral choristers and all attribute their success in life to the training they received as young boys in the choir. In an interview with BT Sport, Alastair Cook explained how being a chorister gave him the focus and confidence he needed to excel in sport: “The discipline of a musical instrument or performing in a choir, under a bit of pressure without making mistakes, if you do it from an early age, you get used to performing in front of people and cricket’s the same thing, it’s just a different skill.” The choristers of Lichfield Cathedral are educated at the Cathedral School and sing services in the Cathedral plus concerts, overseas tours, CD recordings, and radio and television broadcasts. The children usually start in Years 3 or 4 and gain an unrivalled musical education and develop outstanding performance skills while benefitting from a broad and balanced independent school education. They rehearse before and after school and share the weekend service duties. They work long hours, must learn to play at least one musical instrument and study music theory on top of their normal school work. Financial support available Choristers at Lichfield Cathedral benefit from scholarships from the Cathedral Chapter and the School, and additional financial support is available to those in need.
