Kids (and adults) love searching around for hidden treats so here are some hints and tips from Raring2go! to make this year’s hunt the best yet. Easter Egg Hunts and Trails If you don’t want to organise your own egg hunt at home, why not try one of these local events instead: If you have a big garden with lots of bushes and plants to hide eggs behind that’s great but make sure you have a contingency plan to move indoors if the weather is against you. Add a few extra treats for greedy grown-ups who want to tuck in! You could have some fun with your little ones ahead of the hunt by decorating a container with Easter pictures and stickers. Young children will want to enjoy their chocolate rewards as soon as they find them. If you are planning a big family lunch think about timings to make sure you don’t ruin their appetites ahead of the meal. Keep the sugar levels in check by including some non-chocolate Easter egg alternatives such as small Easter themed puzzles, colouring-in, small soft toys or wearable bunny ears. You could hide the prizes in plastic eggs to keep up the ‘egg’ theme. If toddlers or small children are involved, don’t hide the eggs too high, and also make sure that there is nothing potentially dangerous. Count the eggs before you hide them and keep track of how many have been found. A series of clues can make for a more ordered hunt as well as making the fun and entertainment last a little longer. Choose word based or picture clues to suit the ages of your children. Grandparents and other friends and family who can’t be there on the day could record short video clues. Raring2go! WHAT’S ON? Make sure you take a selfie before a spring rain shower washes your creation away! Fly a Kite: Take advantage of the spring winds and fly a kite in an open field. It's a simple yet enjoyable activity for the whole family. It’s still one of those things that makes us stare in wonder! 20 raring2go.co.uk 21 Raring2go! CLUBS & CLASSES Raring2go! FEATURE In a world where screens often take centre stage in our children's lives, the call for promoting physical activity has never been more critical. As parents, we hold the key to unlocking a healthier, more vibrant future for our kids. Let's delve into why fostering a culture of movement is crucial and explore practical ways to make physical activity an integral part of our children's daily lives. Physical activity is not just about exercise; it's a cornerstone of healthy development. Regular movement can act to enhance cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, and contributes to better mental well-being. Beyond the physical benefits, active play also builds crucial social skills, such as teamwork as well as a genuine feeling of personal accomplishment. As parents we have the opportunity to be the architects of an environment that really encourages our children to move. Start by incorporating family activities that revolve around physical play – be it a weekend bike ride, a nature hike or a simple game of tag in the back garden. These shared experiences not only promote physical health but also strengthen family bonds. Consider the power of play in everyday life. Encourage unstructured playtime, allowing your children the freedom to explore and invent games on their own. Whether it's dancing to their favourite tunes, building forts, or engaging in imaginative play, these activities not only promote physical fitness but also ignite creativity. Limit screen time to make room for active pursuits. The sedentary nature of excessive screen use has been linked to various health concerns. Establish screen-time boundaries and replace some of that time with activities that get your children moving. The benefits extend beyond physical health, positively impacting academic performance and emotional well-being. Be a role model for an truly active lifestyle. Children are more likely to adopt healthy habits when they see their parents making physical activity a priority. Make exercise a family affair, showing them that staying active is not a chore but a joyful part of daily life. By embracing and promoting physical activity in our children's lives, we sow the seeds for a healthier, more resilient generation. Let's encourage them to play, move, and thrive, cultivating habits that will serve them well throughout their lives. Together, as parents, we can build a future where our children's vitality knows no bounds. Some primary schools have access to the Bank of England backed Money and Me programme, which teaches key financial concepts and how to manage money at a young age. The real learning, however, will always start at home; how you manage your spending (and saving) will always be the most significant lesson for your children. So, how can you engage your children with successful money management? An important step is building familiarity. Let your kids handle money and see the value it holds. Introduce the idea of purchases that are ‘essential’, such as food basics, and those that are ‘luxury’, such as a magazine. This will help develop a sense of value and perspective when it comes to finances; that everything has a cost and needs consideration. That way, when you do finally introduce the humble piggy bank, the concept of budgeting will already be clear. For older children, being given financial responsibility is a vital part of growing up. Set the right example by explaining how you plan your money for the short, medium and long-term, or opening a savings account with them, so they can see how interest works as an introduction to very low-risk investing’. When they receive money for birthday and Christmas, encourage the discipline of spending half and saving half. However, you choose to prepare your kids, there are resources available to support you. Speak to your children’s school to find out how they teach money in their curriculum — or try asking an adviser for simple ways to present financial concepts (you might learn something new yourself!) James Turner is a Financial Planner at Amanda Redman Financial Planning, a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place. For further advice and to speak to James please email him directly at: james.turner@sjpp.co.ukor feel free to call him on 07359 218142. MONEY MATTERS: How should we talk to our kids about money? The piggy bank has always been a traditional gateway for children to learn the importance of saving their pocket money — but, given these turbulent times, this simple lesson may no longer be enough. James Turner reports: Amanda Redman Financial Planning is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James's Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the group's wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the group's website http://www.sjp.co.uk/products.
