WHAT’S ON? 17 3New Art Gallery Walsall This iconic gallery was hailed as one of the most exciting new galleries to be built in Britain for decades when it opened in 2000 and a walk through the gallery’s spaces is a must for any family. Spend the day discovering all that the gallery has to offer, from works by World-famous artists such as Van Gogh, Constable, Turner, Picasso and Matisse, to the renowned Garman Ryan Collection. The gallery is family-friendly, is accessible to buggies and has family workshops. www.thenewartgallerywalsall.org.uk 4Birmingham Airport Viewing Area Whether you follow aircraft arrivals and departures keenly, want a family day out for the kids to see aircraft up close or just want to observe the comings and goings on the airfield, Birmingham Airport’s free viewing area could be just the thing you are looking for. The area is located at Car Park 5, open 24 hours, and provides picnic benches and a great view of the runway. Remember that if you are arriving by car and parking here, normal car park rates apply. Alternatively, if you’re interested in seeing aeroplanes up close, you can visit the designated viewing area at Sheldon Country Park. It lies just under a mile away from the farm buildings and can only be accessed on foot (no motor vehicles). 5Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Bilston Gallery & Bantock House All run by City of Wolverhampton Council, each venue offers something unique for families. Whether that’s getting creative at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, spending the day exploring the nooks and crannies of Bantock House and Park or coming face to face with fossils and dinosaurs at Bilston Gallery. The galleries have regular events for babies and toddlers during term time and activities, workshops and art classes for older children during the school holidays and weekends. Look out for information about what is coming up and take advantage of the events on offer. If you do need to take the children with you on a shopping trip, it may be an excellent incentive to get the ‘boring’ bits out of the way so that they can get stuck into something more fun afterwards! Visit the National Cold War Exhibition with its eye-catching architecture and design. Discover Cold War stories in immersive Hotspots; explore thrilling displays of aircraft, iconic cars, models, tanks and even life-sized Russian dolls.
