With school results, inspection reports, catchment areas and countless opinions to consider, it can sometimes feel like there’s a lot to take in. But while the facts and figures are important, choosing the right school is also about finding somewhere your child will feel happy, supported and confident. Start with your child Every child is different, so think about what your child needs to thrive. Are they outgoing and energetic, or more reserved? Do they love sport, music, art or getting stuck into practical activities? Do they enjoy a busy environment or feel more comfortable somewhere smaller? Visit before you decide An open day is one of the best ways to get a feel for a school beyond its website or prospectus. Look around the classrooms and outdoor spaces. Watch how teachers interact with the children and, importantly, notice how the pupils themselves seem. Are they happy, engaged and confident? Try to picture your child being part of that community. And don't be afraid to ask questions. Schools expect prospective parents to be curious, so make the most of having staff on hand. Look beyond the results Academic performance is worth considering, but it’s only part of the picture. Results can tell you how pupils have performed, but they don't necessarily tell you whether your child will develop confidence, discover new interests or feel they belong.
