PRE-SCHOOL 12 Rhythms and melodies are great fun to be around at any age, but the effect that it can have on a younger brain, especially a baby’s brain, is far more substantial than you might think. Even the use of simple instruments like shakers can help build cognitive function as well as develop grip and movement. What’s your favourite nursery rhyme? The introduction of simple songs on a regular basis increases knowledge and heightens the connection to the emotional system. Playing along to nursery rhymes at the same time as listening or singing builds both mental and physical strength and coordination, even if it is only banging a drum or woodblock. Does music really make a difference to a baby? Did you learn anything from your favourite nursery rhyme? Besides being fun, music can help babies remember things they have learned. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star reminds us that the stars are in the sky and The Wheels On The Bus taught us all about the different elements on the school bus. We also learn language from the words in these simple tunes. Pop Goes The Weasel helped us form the ‘pop’ of a letter ‘p’ and Incy Wincy Spider with the sound ‘tss’. These sounds can help develop different articulators: can you work out which of those sounds uses your tongue and which needs your lips? 1 Raring2go! Fun Summer crafting ideas from our friends... SIMPLE BUG HOTEL FOR KIDS Our easy bug hotel is probably as simple and as easy as it gets – there are many prettier and cleverer bug hotels out there, but sometimes, you just have to make do with what you have and also make it easy for the kids to join in. For hundreds more crafting ideas, go to: www.redtedart.com Materials • A large plastic bottle cut into two cylinders. • String for hanging. • Sticks & twigs. • Pine cones. •Bark. • Pieces of moss. • Anything else you can find – bamboo with it’s holes, make natural straws, which are great hidey hole for insects and bugs! Basically any natural materials are great! We also had some broken plant pots but forgot all about them. Other bug hotels include other materials such as corn and drilled pieces of wood – to provide different nooks and crannies. I love the one from Garden Therapy. Have a look for inspiration. But in essence, I would say: “think natural”, “think nooks and crannies”, “think what will last” (e.g. paper could go soggy and leaves will go brittle and break/ disintegrate). It is great to use things from YOUR local environment, as you are looking to attract bugs and beetles and insects from the same local environment. How to make a Simple Bug Hotel: Time needed: 15 minutes. 1. Cut the bottle down to size We cut our bottle down to shape (may I add, that I actually drank 2 litres of fizzy water, especially for this task as we accidentally threw out our last bottle in the recycling?? Argh!) 2. Arrange your materials Check what materials you have and arrange by size and texture – we snapped our twigs to make them a little smaller. Had larger and bigger ones. Arranged pinecones. 3. Decide on the insect hotel location and add twine for hanging If you plan to hang your bug hotel, loop some garden twine round and then start layering your bug hotel. We did one hotel for on the ground and one for hanging from a tree to see if would attract different creatures. 4.Make the insect hotel nice and cozy Stuff it to make it nice and firm, so it doesn’t get blown about! We have excellent facilities and have recently applied for a grant from the football foundation to build a state of the art pitch costing £1,000,000, fingers (and everything else) crossed we are successful. The club, led by volunteers has a three-star accreditation, the highest award a grassroots football club can attain. They have over 40 teams the majority are girls/boys teams and provide opportunities for under 5’s to veterans. The Clubs ethos is Football for All, however they are proud of the fact several players have gone on to play professionally, some appearing in the Premier League and playing for England. WHAT’S ON 20 29th August Ride The Lights Blackpool The popular free event sees the seafront stretch fully closed to vehicles for one night only between 19:00 - 22:00 to allow cyclists to get a sneak preview of the Blackpool Illuminations ahead of the annual Switch-On. Ride the Lights is attended by thousands of people every year and has become a firm favourite.Hundreds of children and families from all over the North West and beyond attended the event and many decorated their bikes with a lights theme with a myriad of colourful and exciting designs on display, including a stunning log flume-themed design and even a dodgem themed bike! Explore Rivington Pike Rivington Pike is one of the north of England’s best viewpoints. The historic tower is reputed to date as far back as far as 1138 and boasts breath-taking views of Rivington and beyond. A walk along the Anglezarke Reservoir is an easy ramble along the shore. The Rivington Reservoirs are manmade (built between 1852 - 1857). Remains of buildings covered by water can still be seen when water levels are low. Explore the area around the reservoir by foot or bike and even through the treetops at Go Ape: Rivington. Playgrounds North West South Ribble’s playgrounds are the envy of the North West - and they’re all free to visit. Many have been refurbished in recent years, while there are plans in the pipeline to improve more.
