3 HELLO! Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk It’s always funny putting together our Autumn magazine because as I write it is August bank holiday weekend, the sun is shining and tomorrow I’m off to a festival. Autumn feels a long way off yet but I love looking ahead to all the fun things going on over the Autumnal months and of course looking ahead to Christmas! This issue always gets me excited for panto season and this year our theatres have spoilt us with favourites such as Aladdin, Cinderella and even Alice in Wonderland! Of course when you first think of Autumn you think fireworks! At the time of writing this not all of the details of the local displays have been released but we’ve included what we can and make sure you keep an eye on our website which we will keep updated as more details are released. Finally, although the kids have only just gone back October half term is just around the corner so we’ve done our usual round up of all the best local holiday clubs and camps for you from favourites such as Stagecoach and Camp Beaumont. No matter what your child is into there is something locally for everyone. See you soon! Hello! 27 Helping children who are nervous on fireworks night Every child is unique, some like fireworks more than others and some don’t want to watch them at all which is fine. If your child is nervous around loud noises or is autistic, these are our suggested tips which may help. Explain what’s going to happen. Social or visual stories can be a great help. Let them know when they’re going, where they’re going and the different steps once you’re there. If you can include images, it will help. You can find videos of firework displays on YouTube if they have never watched a display before. Not sure where to start? Google ‘fireworks social stories’ for some ideas or Monkey World have an excellent example of a social story on their website. It’s not fireworks related but it is a great example! Go to www.monkeyworld.org, click on ‘Visit Us’ followed by ‘Disabled Facilities’ and then ‘Accessibility Guide’ to find it. Have plenty of distractions. Hungry children can become distressed children very quickly. Having snacks and drinks on hand can help, maybe even a hot chocolate on a cold night can keep children from worrying and keep their tummies happy too. Use ear defenders or ear plugs. Ear defenders obviously help with the noise, I also find that they help other people realise your child may have extra needs and give them a bit of space! If your child isn’t a fan of ear defenders (especially as they get towards the teen years) we find Loop ear plugs discreet and effective. Contact the venue If your child has a disability or condition, the venue may have a specific viewing area which might give them some extra space and help deal with the crowds. Comfy shoes! Footwear isn’t just essential for keeping little feet warm, my daughter finds the vibrations from the fireworks as off putting as the sound. Having shoes with squishy soles doesn’t elimate the issue but it can reduce it. Consider something low key at home If the noise of fireworks is a big no, maybe toasting marshmallows over a fire basket would be better, or a few sparklers, or one of our favourites is a Mystical Flame sachet that makes the flames burn different colours. (link to Mystical Flames on the QR code). THE FIREWORK CODE ALWAYS FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE ✷ Do not buy fireworks from UNLICENCED retailers. If there’s one thing we know about children, it’s that they are great storytellers. Their imagination and creativity can transport you from a woodland walk to a land of magical fairies and mysterious witches. Oh to see the world through the eyes of a child again… As we “grow up” we seem to lose our inner child and with it our imagination and creativity can fade. But what if we encouraged children to explore this more, and we feed that creativity into something that can grow to serve them as a skill and a route to a career? What if we taught them how to show their stories rather than just tell them? Let’s teach children about films and filmmaking. This October, the Surrey Short Film Festival (SSFF) will take place with a weekend-long celebration of short films on the short film platform Cameo Launch and in person at the award-winning Nova Cinema in Woking. Saturday 7th October will see SSFF present the Film Festival Family Day which will offer an educational and cinematic experience for all ages. In partnership with Sparks Arts, the Film Festival Fun Day will include filmmaking workshops for children aged 8-11 years old. In these sessions, children will work in small groups and get the opportunity to learn new skills, improve their knowledge of basic Empowering children through film filmmaking and work as part of a team to create their very own short film. Families will also have the opportunity to enjoy a showcase of short films in one of Nova Cinema’s fantastic screens. Crossing genres and hailing from all corners of the world, this event will show kids the wonderous and magical world available to them through short film. My daughter is one of the youngest in her classes so over the last year we have been to a lot of children’s parties. This means that she had a LOT of ideas of what she wanted at her party. A bouncy castle was the first thing on the list, that then changed to a pony (no idea where that idea came from!) then she wanted a forest school party but finally she decided on a Frozen themed party at home. As soon as she said she wanted a Frozen party I knew where to turn to – Zara at Koala Kids Parties. Zara went to The Guildford School of Acting and has been a children’s entertainer since 2013. She has won numerous awards for her business. Her and the team offer all kinds of themes such as pirates, fairies, The Gruffalo, Lego, mermaids, and Harry Potter. Every party is different and tailored to the child. KOALITY Birthday Party Entertainment! The whole process from start to finish was so easy! I emailed Zara to enquire about availability and she responded quickly to tell me the date I wanted was still available. I confirmed the details including the number of children, the Frozen theme, venue etc and it was as easy as that – all booked! A week or so before the event Zara contacted me again just to confirm all the details, I’d given her when booking were still correct which gave me an opportunity to ask a few questions which I had. Again, Zara was super responsive and made the whole process so easy! I’m not sure how to sum up the party itself in so few words but I think the picture below of my daughter and her cousin as princess Elsa arrived says it all! Princess Elsa was a dream! She took care of all the entertainment and made sure all the children were happy and getting involved. There were games and dancing as well as role play and bubbles. She even continued the entertainment by chatting to the children when they stopped to eat. I can’t rate Koala Parties highly enough and I will definitely use them again. Arranging a child’s party can be really stressful but Zara and the team took all of that stress away and were an absolute delight to work with. Raring2go! PARTY TIME 26

The inspection took place in November 2022 and the report was published in January 2023. The complete report can be found at ChurchersCollege.com. Commenting on the results, Simon Williams, Headmaster of Churcher’s College, said; “It is incredibly rewarding to be graded as an excellent school in all areas. As a school, we endeavour to develop happy, resilient and resourceful girls and boys ready for the world ahead, therefore it is very encouraging to receive independent recognition and endorsement that the pupils really do benefit from the opportunities and support delivered.” Churcher’s College rated ‘excellent’ in all areas in ISI inspection About the ISI The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is appointed by the Department of Education to inspect independent schools in England and British schools overseas. Gradual Schedule Adjustments: Begin adjusting sleep schedules a week or two before school starts. Gradually shift bedtime and wakeup times to match the school routine, ensuring your child gets enough sleep. Visual Schedules: Create a visual daily schedule that includes waking up, getting dressed, mealtimes, study time, playtime, and bedtime. Visual cues help young children understand and anticipate their daily activities. Morning Routine: Develop a consistent morning routine that includes healthy breakfast options, brushing teeth, and getting dressed. A predictable routine reduces morning stress for everyone! Homework Time: Set a designated time for homework and studying. Keep the sessions short, engaging, and age-appropriate. Breaks and rewards can make study time more enjoyable. Organised Workspace: Designate a clutterfree workspace for studying and completing assignments. Ensure it’s well-lit and free from distractions. Daily Checklists: Use simple checklists for tasks like packing school bags, completing assignments, and tidying up. This helps children take ownership of their responsibilities. Getting Back into School Routines: The pathway to a successful academic year! Social Preparation: Talk to your child about reconnecting with friends and building positive relationships with teachers. Discuss the importance of good behaviour and communication at school. Encourage Independence: Foster independence by allowing your child to make small decisions, like choosing outfits or packing snacks. This builds confidence and responsibility. Healthy Habits: Emphasise the importance of nutritious meals, staying hydrated, and engaging in physical activities. Teach basic hygiene routines, such as handwashing and covering coughs. Bedtime Routine: Establish a calming bedtime routine with activities like reading a book, storytelling, or cuddling. Consistent wind-down activities signal that it’s time to relax and prepare for sleep. Raring2go! EDUCATION 36 As summer’s sun-drenched / rain-drenched days start to wane, the familiar rhythm of school routines beckons once again. The transition from leisurely days to structured academic schedules may seem daunting for some children and parents. Here are ten valuable tips to help children get back into a successful school routine:

Each Summer Term, many Primary and Prep Schools end their Year 6s’ KS2 journey with a public performance of a musical, play or even a pantomime. This is not because teachers have run out of curriculum content at the end of year 6, or that we want all students to go on to be actors! So, why has this become a convention? In short, “putting on” a play can be an incredibly rich learning experience for young people, whilst it is also an opportunity to stretch and challenge students in a range of capacities. Jess Wittert, Head of Prep Drama at St Catherine’s Bramley says “Stories have an important place in helping children and adults alike to understand the world we live in. Through stories we are invited to explore different cultures, characters, relationships and emotions. Every year, I choose the story that my students will discover through our production with great care. Often, coming-of-age tales seem incredibly relevant; stories where characters go on rich adventures, face complex challenges and have no choice but to learn and grow from their mistakes. Tales where characters must work together to achieve a common goal, or where children’s voices hold important messages that are heard by the adults around them are also subjects that young people connect with and are inspired by.” It is always my hope to inspire confidence in all my students so that More Than Just a Story The Importance of Drama they leave the Prep School feeling that they can achieve anything that they set their minds to. By working together as a large team with their peers, teachers, parents and helpers, they appreciate that a broad breadth of skills should be brought to any project. That being part of a community, creating links in one’s learning and sharing rich experiences is not only life enhancing but empowering. Before our most recent production, an 11-year-old student came to my desk. “Thank you,” she said, “I really didn’t want to do it but now, it’s my destiny.” She was referring, rather effusively, to our recent year 6 theatre production and her calling to be part of future theatrical casts. Why was she so gushing, you may ask? One could make many assumptions as to where her enthusiasm stemmed from, but simply, the experience of being part of an ensemble cast, rehearsing, crafting and performing our musical had given her a deeper sense of self-confidence, a keen interest in stagecraft, a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and team spirit, whilst she had learnt a great deal. Yet, most importantly, the event had brought real joy. Understandably, she wished that she could relive this process all over again, moving from perceived dread to elation! 38

The Chair of the Independent Schools of the Year noted the excellence in student experience evidenced by shortlisted schools. Naomi Bartholomew, Headmistress, noted “I am so pleased that we have been recognised for our approach to teaching science.” Our philosophy is that scientific learning should be hands-on and occur throughout the curriculum. We support our specialist Science staff to keep learning and ensure our girls have strong role-models. In doing so we encourage girls’ career aspirations in scientific fields. Our Prep School alumnae include girls currently studying Medicine at King’s, Natural Sciences at Durham and Computer Independent School of the Year Award 2023 Science at Southampton. Alumnae in Science include Natasha, an immunology research scientist at UCB, Alisa, a Mellalurgy Lab Manager and Daisy heading to Lancaster to study Zoology. We also enjoy working with local schools to share in scientific discovery with events such as our ‘Super Science Camps’. Awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) Gold Award (Outreach) in 2022, we have already been recognised for our commitment to girls’ education in Science and my team and I are very excited to be shortlisted and would be thrilled to have the honour of being named Independent Prep School of the Year 2023. As parent Dr Lowe said ‘‘I love to hear her teacher say .. ‘Sorry we are late out, we got carried away in our Science Experiments!’” it is 39 EDUCATION Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk wonderful that St Cat’s reputation for science teaching and young scientists has been recognised in the Independent Prep School of the Year Award 2023 shortlist.
