3 Raring2go! EDITOR’S NOTE Autumn is coming... there’s lots to do! It seems that after a pretty quiet Halloween last year, when it was difficult to guage what would be best to do to stay safe, Autumn 2022 sees a variety of Halloween and Pumpkin picking events across the area and events are back in full swing. Autumn 2022 also marks four years that I’ve been in the job as editor for Raring2go! and I would just like to thank all of our readers, website subscribers and social media followers. This magazine is an absolute pleasure to edit due to the sense of community from the readers. It’s great to have so many events being posted on the website and sent to me via social media. It is also my last Autumn edition, as I will be leaving Raring2go! Harrogate and York by August 2023. The Summer edition will be my final one before I hand over the reins to a new editor. Who might that editor be? That, dear readers is very much up to you. If you, or someone you know would be interested in taking over the Raring2go! Harrogate and York franchise, go to page 13 and check out the advert. Please do share this opportunity with others too, this fantastic little magazine will be a great business for someone out there, who would like to work part-time, flexibly, from home! Remember too, that if you have an event or cause that you would like to promote, you can submit the dates on the website. Get in touch! Mobile: 07394828035 Email: Harrogateandyork@raring2go.co.uk Facebook: /raring2goharrogateandyork Twitter: @r2gHarrogate We have lots of spooky and fun Halloween events running over the half term, Lightwater Valley, Dalby Forest, Lotherton Hall, Spilman’s Farm and many other places. Have a look at the What’s On section of the website and the magazine for even more events - the website is updated very regularly along with the facebook page. As we went to print there were not many details being released about bonfires and firework displays around the area. You can be sure that as soon as we find out the details, we will post them up! I always find that reviews are really helpful in giving that extra info as well as hints and tips to make your visit go as smoothly as possible, so you will see lots of reviews on the website and social media, including books, shows, tours and events. If you have something that you think the Raring2go team should review, let us know using the contact details below. Have a fantastic Autumn, Jennie

20 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! FEATURE How to choose the best secondary school for your child Choosing the best school for your child can be very stressful. However, planning ahead will make the process much easier. “Every lesson should be outstanding. Teachers should adopt a child centred learning style. It is the job of teachers to inspire, motivate and constantly develop new strategies to find each child’s unique talent.” Preparation for your visit Consider all the options You may have several reasons for not including a school on your short-list but whatever the reason it is best to keep an open mind until you have done your homework. Schools change and what may have been a ‘failing’ school may now be outstanding, due to new leadership. Research Find out as much as you can about the school before your visit. Look at Ofsted reports, visit parent forums, read magazines or any articles you can find about the school performance. Look at the school website. Is it updated regularly? The school website is the window to a school, a well-managed school will usually have an excellent website. Ask to speak to the Head Teacher Can you? If not why? Try to schedule a meeting with the Head during your visit. This will give you an invaluable insight about the ‘culture of openness’ within the school. Observe and ask questions Where possible it is useful to see how children interact before and after school, this will give you a good indication about whether your child will ‘fit in’. Speak to parents of children attending the school. Don’t be afraid to ask questions • What is the educational mission for the school? • What pastoral care does the school offer? • What is the school’s approach to student discipline and safety? • What extracurricular activities are available? • Does the school help students achieve and excel individual targets? • Does the school have an arts department? • What support is there for students who have academic, social or emotional needs? • Do you encourage student/parent feedback by surveys or meetings? • Can you visit the school on a normal working day? • How do children travel to school? • Is there a school bus?

22 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! FEATURE 1) Get yourself ready first, before your child. It’s helpful to prepare some things the night before and go to bed at a reasonable hour so you’ll all wake early enough. Late nights are a sure fire way to make the mornings more stressful for everyone. 2) Don’t turn on the TV before breakfast. Its far better to make sure the children are dressed before they eat and then perhaps when they’re fully ready you can turn the television on. 3) Let your child know ahead of time that you’ll be going out. Explain exactly what the day’s activities will be and tell them clearly what their time requirements are. 4) Help younger children learn the importance of being organised. Encourage them to do things for themselves. For example, teaching children to get dressed by themselves is chance to practice independent skills and it will save you time in the long run! 5) Turn getting ready into a game! For example, you could try the “beat the clock” game. The idea is that your child’s goal is to be ready before the alarm clock buzzes. If you child wins he/she earns a small treat or reward such as a favourite snack in their lunch box. It’s important to tell your child exactly what tasks they must do in order to be ready to leave and thus win the reward. Back to school... Unfortunately the holidays cant last forever. 24 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! FEATURE Every parent will tell you that keeping their child safe around roads is a constant worry. Whether you are travelling on foot, by car, by bike, or with a buggy or pushchair, it's vital to keep children as safe as possible near roads. Six children are killed or seriously injured on roads every day in the UK. Road traffic injuries are the biggest cause of death among young people worldwide. The good news is there are lots of things that can be done to improve road safety at a local level and Road Safety Week is an ideal opportunity to bring people together to work towards safer travel for all. Road Safety Week is organised by Brake, the road safety charity, and is sponsored by Arval, DHL and VisionTrack. It supports the Department for Transport's THINK! campaign. The theme of Road Safety Week 2022 is SAFE ROADS FOR ALL, bringing together communities and professionals to shout out for everyone's right to make safe and healthy journeys on safe roads. We will raise awareness of key areas of road safety supported by the Government, including safe roads, safe vehicles and speeds, the new hierarchy of road users, and the importance of inclusivity to keep us all safe on the roads, no matter who we are, or how we travel.Road Safety Week is Brake's biggest annual road safety campaign. Every year, thousands of schools, organisations and communities get involved to share important road safety messages, remember people affected by road death and injury, and raise funds to help Brake care for more road victims and campaign for safe roads for everyone.
